And alongside a crash-bang-wallop bowling alley, turbo-charged retro arcade and lively dining area is a bar that serves up enough craft THERE ARE LEVELS to hops, and craft interpretations take some beating. Maybe it’s the enthusiasm with which they are concocted that elevates their taste to dizzying heights. Or perhaps it’s the fact they are bottled in smaller batches, meaning flavours are less diluted. Either way, they are mightily refreshing in contrast to their rank and file stablemates and, without intentionally invoking the spirit our inner hipster, they are just cooler than the same old same old. Here are some top spots for craft hops in Dubai. Black Goose This industrial-cool sports joint on the JBR strip screams craft hops. From its in-the-round Top bars to find craft beverages. Soho Beer Garden It’s insinuated in the name of this hotspot that visitors will be well-stocked with hops of all kinds. And they are absolutely not messing about, carrying a monster selection of craft specials that will give experts a taste from around the globe. Featured on the whistle- stop tour are charmers from Scotland, Australia and the States, so expect an eclectic collection of tastes and enough variety to keep the orders – and good times – flowing. O Meydan Racecourse, Nad Al Sheba, www.sohogardendxb.com (052 388 8849). The Eloquent Elephant You can expect to find some interesting craft hops, and you’ll also be able to bag yourself some wonderfully inventive grub, as it picked up a Highly Commended Pub Food award from Time Out Dubai recently. Admittedly, there are just a couple to choose from – one from the states and another quite famous rendition from Scotland – but they hold a mighty draw. Nelson’s With crafty numbers from across the UK and Ireland, and the rogue appearance from hops of the German persuasion, Nelson’s boasts a formidable line-up across the board. It’s a popular haunt for its competitive happy hour deals, and even though the craft hops aren’t included, it’s more than enough bait to catch attention. The Tap House There’s no prizes for guessing why people frequent The Tap House. But supporting the usual cast of household draught hops are some tasty craft-centric flavours. Take them inside or out on the breezy terrace at Club Vista Mare – either way it’s a frosty spot from which to watch the sun go down. O Club Vista Mare, The Palm, www.thetaphouse.ae (04 514 3778). Weslodge Saloon Weslodge Saloon may have notoriety as destination for Irish short measures, but it also stocks a healthy range of craft hops for those who prefer their drinks in pints as opposed to on the rocks. The selection is deep enough to keep rear-ends in seats for much of an evening, allowing plenty of time to examine and comment on the wild range of animal heads and old-English photoframes that hang in their dozens up on the wall, plus, of course, super views from its sky-high vantage point. European bar with dollops of character WHY GO... Authentic Belgian hops Time Out reviews anonymously and pays for its drinks Belgian Café O Open Wed-Fri noon-2am, Sat-Tue noon-1am. Souk Madinat, Jumeirah (04 447 0227). BAR IN FOCUS BELGIAN CAFÉ IS bendy. And we mean the real prima ballerina kind of flexible. Weird thing to say about a bar, fair cop. But that’s exactly what this Euro pit-stop is, in the sense that it moulds into whatever type of venue patrons need it to be. A place to pitch up with the boys for the rugby. Tick. A place to erase the pains of that ridiculous HR meeting that could have oh-so-easily been an email. Check. A place to take the other half’s parents and strategically slip away with the father-in-law for a sneaky Irish short measure. Mega tick (we could go on but our pen is running out of ink at this point). It’s all exposed wood, big screens and dollops of character. There’s a steady hum of activity, and at full tilt it’s a busy bolt-hole that claims a decent membership of regulars (always an accurate barometer of a bar’s credentials). At quieter times it can even feel like you own the joint, like there’s a barrel and tap in your own front room. Cut work early to get to the four-hour happy hour daily from 4pm to 8pm (except Fridays). Speaking of those barrels, they’re loaded with authentic Belgium hops that are just tops in our books. It’s a similar story on the food front. Chefs are far from stingy when it comes to loading plates, and portion sizes provide robust critiques of any and all ‘I could eat a horse’ (not literally) claims. The fish and chips straight up bangs, and you can never go too far astray with steak frites, cheesy burgers et al. It would be remiss not to talk up the terrace, which “Barrels are loaded with authentic Belgian hops” overlooks Souk Madinat and is near enough the only reminder that our co-ordinates place us in Dubai, not Bruges. Whatever the mood, a grande jeté towards Belgian Café will almost always result in a soft landing. 52_TOD_M&N REVIEW 1 & 2_11629413.indd 5229/03/2021 11:53:14There’s no such thing.
