Happily, Dubai has heaps of fantastic outdoor restaurants – but these are the top ten in town, as crowned at the Time Out Dubai Restaurant Awards 2021, in association with Dubai Food Festival. The food at Lana Lusa is the best Portuguese cuisine you’ll find in Dubai. We’ve said it. In fact, it’s some of the best grub in the city, hands down. Which is why it picked up a gong for Best Casual Newcomer at the Time Out Dubai Restaurant Awards 2021. And it’s not because dishes are zhooshed up with any bells and whistles. There’s no billowing dry ice, sprinkling of gold or pillows of foam here – it’s simple, clean food that’s utterly delicious. Nestled just off the street, take a seat in the cosy courtyard surrounded by leafy green foliage and casual wicker chairs. With a mellow, friendly vibe it’s almost as if you’re on a summer holiday (all that’s missing is a glass of grape). Service is knowledgeable and friendly, while dishes sing with authentic flavours. And it’s in one of the hottest emerging ’hoods, too. Lana Lusa is housed in the fast- growing food hub that is Wasl 51. There are crisp, fresh salads if you’re after something light, but the seafood’s where it’s at. From marinated sardines to octopus salad and salted cod, there’s a whole ocean to eat your way through. Order up a lot to share (and get ready for disputes over the final bite). Generously sized shrimp croquettes pull apart to reveal steaming, fragrant centres packed with the titular crustacean, while following the theme, gambas com alho (pan- seared prawns with garlic) are juicy and delicious, with a garlicky sauce that will have you sweeping up every drop with crusty bread. Super spot banging the drum for proper Portuguese cooking WHY GO... Authentic dishes bursting with flavour. And the custard tarts (obv) But for the main event it’s all about the arroz de tamboril – a monkfish stew swimming with rice, peppers, onion and tomato boasting a mesmorising aroma when the terracotta lid is lifted. For meatier mains there’s pan-fried picanha or chicken with homemade peri-peri sauce to keep all parties happy. But we’re not done yet. Don’t miss the pasteis de nata. Buttery yet light pastry houses creamy custard – these little beauties are a treat whether for dessert, with a morning coffee or taken home in a box and shared with friends (who will then plonk you at the top of their Christmas card lists). The best breakfast in Dubai WHY GO... Friendly service, a cool vibe and stupendous banana bread waffles HEADING OUT FOR breakfast is a divisive subject. You’re either from the “it’s the weekend, I don’t need to cook” camp, or the “I can make eggs myself at home,” department. The latter, however, is redundant when it comes to breakfasting at LOWE. Unless you’re an expert chef, you won’t be whipping up anything anywhere near as tasty as the plates you’ll find here. When it comes to creativity LOWE has certainly got its eggs and soldiers in order – and that goes for any meal of the day. But we’re talking brekkie. Shrug off any thoughts of cereal – instead think coconut chia, açaí sorbet, smashed avocado with grilled prawns and more. Our advice? Make breakfast a two-course meal. You absolutely shouldn’t miss the Spanish tortilla, which is cooked perfectly with a firm coat and wobbly centre, lifted by a generous dollop of aioli and beautifuly charred padron peppers. Follow it up with the remarkable banana bread waffles. A massive, yet somehow airy, waffle is studded with candied walnuts, loaded with miso ice cream and doused in maple syrup. The crispy edges, cinnamon dough, cooling ice cream and crunchy, caramelly nuts combine for one an absolute winner of a dish, and even if you’re a no-sweets-in the-morning type (who are you?), don’t shun this. Your home-cooked omelette won’t cut it after a visit to LOWE. Trust us. LOWE O Open Wed-Thu 6pm-10.30pm, Fri 8am-4pm, 6pm-10.30pm, Sat 8am-4pm. Licensed. Roger Federer has played tennis on it. That’s right – we’re talking about the Burj Al Arab. Touted as one of the most famous hotels in the entire planet – this ultra-exclusive location is so swish you need a reservation to even cross the bridge. But if you’re not in the market to book a stay (there are suites only at this hotel), you can plan a meal instead. Our advice? Book into al fresco spot SAL. This restaurant and “beach experience” (we use inverted commas, as, as you’ll be aware from those guide books, the hotel is set out to sea with no actual beach) is well-worth booking into, and it won’t set you back as much as you might imagine. Of course it’s Burj Al Arab so still fancy, so don’t come in your scruffs, but in a relaxed kind of way, and by day or night the views are stunning. And the food is worth getting stuck into too. Try the empanada (which is more akin to a calzone) stuffed with lemony chicken and fragrant herbs. Lobster linguine is sweet, fresh and tasty, although both are a little heavy if you’re planning on a dip later. If that’s the case opt for the juicy prawns with feta and tomatoes, which has robust flavours yet remains light, and is utterly moreish. Pair it with a chilled glass of pink grape, slip on your designer shades and you’ll fit right in – and have plenty to write home about. WHAT IS IT... Swish spot at an exclusive hotel WHY GO... A hop from the street on the main JBR walk and you’re on JB’s’ terrace, which is fine but the real action is indoors. And judging by the popularity of the ‘sausage by the metre’, even the quirky elements rock it in the taste department. (We’ll be back for you, veal bratwurst.) One blot on an otherwise perfect copy book, is the burrata. It’s not bad, it’s just not needed on this menu. But hey, nobody’s perfect.
