Refl ecting on the moments that have shaped his leadership style, Al Gebely recalls how his mindset evolved over time. Initially, his focus was solely on achieving tangible results. However, as his career progressed, he realised that leadership is just as much about fostering an environment of accountability, ownership, and continuous growth. “The greatest leaders aren’t those who have it all fi gured out,” Al Gebely says. “They’re those who empower others to rise, experiment, and contribute. It’s about creating a culture where failure is not feared, but seen as a stepping stone toward greater success. It’s this mentality that allows us to remain innovative and adaptable, even in the face of challenges.” INNOVATION AS A WAY OF LIFE At ONE Development, innovation is key, embedded into the very fabric of the company from the beginning. “Innovation thrives when it’s aligned with the values that defi ne who we are,” Al Gebely explains. For him, being innovative goes beyond creating new processes or following trends, it’s about improving people’s lives through technology and thoughtful design. From the start, Al Gebely has made it a priority to nurture a culture that encourages creativity and fresh thinking. He achieves this by giving his teams the freedom to experiment with new ideas, providing constant feedback, and encouraging cross-departmental collaboration. However, this doesn’t mean abandoning the company’s foundational values of integrity, transparency, and respect. Instead, these values act as a guide, ensuring that innovation is responsible and impactful. By maintaining this balance, ONE Development creates spaces that are trustworthy and meaningful to the residents they serve. DIFFERENTIATING IN A CROWDED MARKET The UAE’s real estate market is fi ercely competitive, with numerous developers vying for attention and market share. For ONE Development, the key to standing out has always been a focus on personalisation and technology. Al Gebely acknowledges the challenge of diff erentiating his company in a market full of well-established players, but he is confi dent that it’s the combination of innovative technology and a commitment to quality that has set ONE Development apart. “We had to rethink what innovation really looks like in this environment,” he explains. “We didn’t want to just build buildings. We wanted to create experiences—spaces that resonate with people’s everyday lives.” This vision has led to the integration of artifi cial intelligence into many of the company’s projects, making them not only smarter but also more intuitive and energy-effi cient. However, technology is just one part of the equation. Al Gebely also places a strong emphasis on wellness, convenience, and community. “The human experience is at the centre of everything we do,” he says. “Our spaces are designed to make life more connected, more comfortable, and more fulfi lling.” By focusing on these key elements— technology, wellness, and personalisation— ONE Development has been able to carve out a unique niche for itself in the UAE’s crowded real estate market. The company continues to stay true to its core values, ensuring that every development provides a space where residents can thrive in. “INSPIRED BY YOU” One of the guiding principles of ONE Development is its philosophy of ‘Inspired by You.’ Other than being a smart marketing tagline, this philosophy ensures that every development refl ects the real and raw needs of the people who will live there. “Our residents are the heartbeat of our projects,” says Al Gebely. The company employs a data-driven, human- centric approach to design, placing great emphasis on understanding the individual needs and aspirations of its potential residents. Instead of merely relying on generic market trends, ONE Development makes it a priority to engage with residents from the earliest stages of the project. Through thoughtful interactions and feedback loops, they gain deep insights into the specifi c preferences and expectations of future occupants. This information is then used to inform design decisions that go beyond traditional specifi cations, creating spaces that foster genuine connections and meet both current and future needs. Rather than simply building for the present, the company considers long-term adaptability. By integrating proactive strategies that address both environmental and lifestyle shifts, they ensure that each space remains functional and relevant, no matter how the needs of the residents evolve over time. At the heart of ONE Development’s designs is the goal of creating spaces that nurture comfort, connection, and a sense of belonging. They understand that a home is more than just a structure; it’s a place where life unfolds. To that end, the company prioritises features such as smart technology, wellness elements, and versatile, fl exible spaces that can easily adapt to changing circumstances. This attention to detail and long-term planning means that the homes they create will not only serve their purpose today but will also provide lasting value, enhancing the quality of life for residents well into the future. A PERSONAL DEFINITION OF SUCCESS When asked about what success means to him, Al Gebely refl ects on the bigger picture: “Success for ONE Development is about redefi ning living, working, and connectivity. It’s about creating spaces that make a meaningful diff erence—whether that’s solving a small day-to-day problem or creating a space that becomes a part of someone’s life story.” On a personal level, Al Gebely sees success as appreciating the journey; the highs and the lows, the challenges and the triumphs. “Success is about looking back and knowing that what we’ve created has made a real diff erence. That it’s not just about what we’ve built, but about how it’s impacted the lives of the people who live there and the industry as a whole.” As the company continues to grow, both locally and globally, Al Gebely remains focused on the ultimate goal: to create sustainable, intelligent spaces that truly resonate with those who call them home. His journey in real estate has been marked by a desire to do what others have not, to challenge the norms, and to give new meaning to personalised living, all while doing so with a confi dent smile on his face. It wasn’t about authority or status. No, it was about connection. Years later, as a leader in dispute resolution, he applies the same principle: understanding people, reading the room and knowing when to step in—or step back. In a fi eld where legal arguments can only take you so far, he shares why the real key to resolving disputes isn’t just about having the right answer, but also knowing how to deliver it at the right moment. Whether it’s preventing a dispute altogether, securing a favourable settlement, or strengthening a client’s position before arbitration, my focus is always on crafting the right approach—not just the right argument— to achieve the best possible result. Who or what is your greatest infl uence, both personally and professionally? To be honest, many people have played a big role in shaping my career. I’ve drawn inspiration from countless industry leaders who set the bar high in how they represent their brands. But if I had to name the most profound infl uence on my professional journey, it would be my father. He was an old-school Greek gentleman—some might say a little rough around the edges—but he had this rare and incredible gift: the ability to connect, eff ortlessly and authentically, with people from all walks of life. He could switch gears seamlessly, whether he was talking to a government offi cial, a diplomat, or the guy behind the counter at the local bakery. And the best part? He never put on an act. He was just himself, and in doing so, he made everyone feel seen, heard, and valued. That ability left a deep impression on me and fundamentally shaped how I approach leadership and communication. In my world today, adapting my communication style on the fl y isn’t just helpful; it’s essential. Over the years, I’ve also developed a sharp sense of what I call “atmospherics”; the ability to read the energy in a room, beyond just emotional intelligence. It’s about picking up on cultural nuances, knowing how much detail an audience can handle, sensing when people are receptive (or when they’ve checked out), and ultimately, understanding who’s genuinely willing to work toward a resolution. And in an industry where relationships and negotiations are everything, that skill has been invaluable. Your work often involves high-pressure environments. How would you describe your leadership approach in these situations? What core values do you prioritise when making critical decisions? My approach starts with stepping back and and how does it set you apart in the industry? I was fortunate to develop my skills in international consultancy surrounded by exceptional individuals—many of whom I still respect and stay in touch with today. That environment allowed me to refi ne my technical expertise, sharpen my commercial instincts, and develop a deep understanding of the human dynamics that drive negotiations and dispute resolution. Over time, I realised that my ability to blend technical, commercial, and strategic thinking was what clients valued most. That realisation ultimately led me to establish Composite Consult. Structuring my practice independently allows me to off er clients a highly personalised and hands-on approach, one where they receive my full attention and direct involvement. What sets me apart is my ability to assess disputes holistically. Before getting into the technical details, I focus on understanding the full context that brought us to this point. It’s like picking up a book near the end—you can read the fi nal chapters, but without knowing what came before, you won’t fully grasp the depth of the story or the emotions invested along the way. To craft an eff ective strategy, you need the whole narrative. You have to visualise the ideal resolution and work toward an outcome that feels fair for everyone involved. A good story doesn’t just tie up loose ends, it restores balance, making the journey feel worthwhile, no matter how much tension is built along the way. The same principle applies to dispute resolution. The goal isn’t for one side to overpower the other; it’s to reach an outcome where both parties feel heard, respected, and ultimately satisfi ed. Because at the end of the day, a resolution isn’t truly successful unless everyone walks away feeling like they got something fair in return. Cultural nuances play a signifi cant role in dispute resolution. How do you navigate these complexities while fostering a collaborative approach? Authentic personal interest makes all the diff erence. After client meetings, I make it a point to step away from the project itself and engage in more personal conversations—talking about backgrounds, favourite places, or memorable travels. Being from Greece often provides an easy starting point; most people have either visited or plan to, which naturally shifts the discussion from business to genuine connection. It’s these moments that build trust and make collaboration so much smoother. One moment that stands out was mediating between Malaysian and Greek entities—two cultures with completely diff erent diplomatic styles. Having spent four years working in Malaysia, I had a deep appreciation for the nuances of Malaysian culture. During a casual break, I brought up familiar places in Kuala Lumpur, favourite local dishes, and shared experiences. That simple, personal connection broke down defensive barriers and softened the room. What had seemed like an impossible negotiation suddenly had common ground, and from there, we reached a resolution that had previously felt out of reach. What advice would you give to your younger self about navigating this industry and building a successful practice? Navigating this industry and building a successful practice isn’t just about having technical expertise, it’s about being able to communicate that expertise clearly and persuasively. It’s one thing to know your craft, but if you can’t break down complex ideas in a way that resonates with diff erent audiences, especially in an international setting where English may not be everyone’s fi rst language, you’ll struggle to make an impact. If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be this: success doesn’t just happen; it comes from intentionally developing a range of skills. Some will come naturally, but many will require deliberate eff ort and continuous refi nement. What started as a specialised contractor soon evolved into a cornerstone of the kingdom’s construction industry, leaving a mark on its infrastructure. Today, Almabani stands as one of the companies facing Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goal head-on, shaping the nation’s urban landscape and rethinking what is possible in engineering and construction. At the helm of this legacy is Joseph Daher, CEO of Almabani, who has overseen the company’s involvement in some of the kingdom’s most critical projects, including the $12 billion Riyadh Metro Project and major airport projects in the country. “Since our founding in 1972, we have taken on projects that push the boundaries of construction, from military airbases and airports to the intricate road networks of Riyadh,” says Daher. One of the most defi ning moments in Almabani’s history came with the entry of the Public Investment Fund (PIF) into its shareholding structure. “The PIF investment in Almabani gives us the fi nancial strength to expand our capabilities and tackle more complex projects that align with the kingdom’s vision,” Daher explains. “More importantly, it solidifi es our long-term role in building Saudi Arabia’s future.” This backing has enabled Almabani to take on a wider scope of high-profi le projects. DELIVERING VISION 2030 Almabani’s contribution to Vision 2030 is evident in its extensive portfolio of ongoing and completed projects. From revolutionising urban mobility to enhancing the kingdom’s tourism infrastructure, the company is deeply embedded in Saudi Arabia’s ambitious growth plans. Among its major contributions is the Riyadh Metro, a landmark public transportation system designed to alleviate congestion and provide world-class mobility solutions. “We played a critical role in the project, from bringing together global leaders like Bechtel and Siemens to executing key construction elements,” says Daher. “Despite the immense challenges—such as working in densely populated urban zones and managing 28,000 workers during the pandemic—we successfully delivered a project that will serve Riyadh for generations to come.” Almabani played a key role in transforming Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure CONCRETE AMBITIONS From Riyadh Metro to AlUla’s Sharaan Resort, Almabani has shaped Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure for 50 years, driving Vision 2030 with groundbreaking projects CW_Apr2025_58-59_Al Mabani_13564965.indd 5831/03/2025 19:14APRIL 2025 59 INTERVIEW ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE Almabani’s ability to handle complex, large- scale projects is proof of its deep expertise. From constructing 17 bridges to ease congestion in the King Abdullah Financial District to managing the intricate logistics of urban infrastructure projects, the company has consistently delivered quality developments. “When working in urban environments, minimising disruption is crucial,” Daher explains. “We leverage a mix of precast and cast-in-situ techniques to ensure that our projects maintain the highest quality while keeping city life moving.” Such ingenuity was especially critical in the Riyadh Metro project, where Almabani was in charge of navigating logistical and engineering hurdles. The scale of the project was daunting—19,000 tons of rails installed, 18km of tunnels excavated, 25km of viaducts constructed, and 37 stations built, including the iconic KAFD station designed by Zaha Hadid. THE ROAD AHEAD As Saudi Arabia continues its rapid transformation, Almabani remains adaptable. With ongoing projects in aviation, entertainment, and urban development, the company is expanding its expertise while upholding the principles that have defi ned its success for over fi ve decades. “Our reputation is built on technical excellence, reliability, and long-standing partnerships with industry leaders,” Daher says. “By continuously developing our talent, embracing new technologies, and aligning ourselves with Saudi Arabia’s ambitions, we are not just constructing buildings—we are contributing to building the future of the kingdom.” From the sands of the Empty Quarter to the towering structures of Riyadh, Almabani’s legacy is etched into the very fabric of Saudi Arabia. With Vision 2030 as its guiding light, the company is not just witnessing history—it is making it. Almabani’s work extends far beyond transportation. The company is also involved in high-profi le developments such as the Six Flags Qiddiya theme park, where it is working alongside Bouygues Bâtiment International to deliver record- breaking attractions, including the world’s fastest roller coaster. “This is more than just an amusement park, it’s a statement of the kingdon’s ambitions to be a global leader in entertainment,” Daher notes. The company is also playing a key role, alongside its partners from Bouygues Batiment International and Bouygues Travaux Publics, in the transformation of AlUla, a UNESCO World Heritage site, through its work on the Sharaan Resort—a luxury hotel carved directly into the cliff s, designed by renowned architect Jean Nouvel. “This is a project that requires precision and respect for cultural heritage,” Daher emphasises. “Our team is using modern technology and specially designed machinery to execute one of the most unique hospitality developments in the world.” Consistently delivering successful projects is key to maintaining and strengthening our reputation, while overcoming any obstacles or challenges that may arise” Joseph Daher, CEO of Almabani The company managed 28,000 workers during the pandemic CW_Apr2025_58-59_Al Mabani_13564965.indd 5931/03/2025 19:15Next >
