The contracting giant is also working on Dubai- based megaproject, the $1.4bn (AED5.14bn), 46-storey, 800-room Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences development on the Palm Jumeirah, which is expected to open in late-2020. In addition, the company is working on the Andaz Hotel by Hyatt in Jumeirah 1 District in Dubai’s La Mer – a seven- oor, 156-key hotel that is expected to be completed in 2020. This will be the rm’s sixth project since its re-entry into Dubai’s construction market in 2015. Ssangyong E&C is also working on ICD Brook eld Place – a 54-storey commercial tower located in Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). When the World Expo concludes on March 31, 2022, the Leadership and Media pavilions will be transformed into hotels, which are expected to achieve four-star ratings. Phase 2 of Al Tasnim Group’s multi-dwelling community development – The Ras Al Hamra Development Project – which consists of apartments, villas, and related infrastructure, was shortlisted for Construction Week’s Residential Project of the Year at its CW Oman Awards 2020 edition. In February 2020, Al Tasnim inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Culture to construct a visitor centre at the Bat archeological site and develop the surrounding area of the Khutm Archaeological Tower. In a joint venture with Parsons, Atkins was awarded the consultancy services for the extension of Dubai Metro’s green and red lines. The consultancy was also appointed as lead designer for the expansion of King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA), Terminal 1, in Jeddah. In addition to lead design activities, the rm handled the architectural, special airport systems (SAS), and information and communication technology (ICT) design for all aspects of the terminal building. Atkins was also appointed by Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA) as the lead design consultant to deliver a fully coordinated and detailed master plan for the site in coordination and cooperation with specialist consultants. The consultancy is also supporting the KAFD in the rebranding, and completion of its development, with over 59 towers in an area spanning 1.6km2. 42 Under the leadership of Francis Scholten in the Middle East, Losberger De Boer has worked on a number of projects of national importance over the last 12 months to claim a spot in Construction Week’s ranking of the Middle East’s 100 most in uential construction leaders of 2020. Losberger De Boer – which specialises in bespoke temporary structures, modular buildings, containers and room modules, industrial buildings, and temporary warehouses, among other semi-permanent build options – delivered the build contract for Riyadh’s second electric grand prix in November 2019. The rm handled the project management and delivery of 6,300m2 of indoor event space and 7,350m2 of outdoor space, comprising integrated hospitality and viewing facilities and a 210-metre pit lane building. Most notably, the rm was associated in Saudi Arabia’s launch of the Qiddiya project by delivering an integrated complex of 15 semi-permanent buildings, including the Panorama Dome – the only one of its kind in the kingdom. To deliver the project within 60 days, the Losberger De Boer team worked 9,360 hours over 36 days. In December 2019, Ramboll Group acquired two significant players in the building landscape - Henning Larsen, which shares a common vision to create sustainable cities and buildings that answer the global challenges; and Web Structures, which strengthens Ramboll Group’s existing high-rise, luxury resorts, and high-end residential buildings portfolio in the Middle East and Asia Pacific region. Ramboll is providing full engineering design services for the new high- rise, mixed-use project – the Emaar Downtown Plot 27 tower – which is located on the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard within walking distance of the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Opera House, and Dubai Mall. Once constructed, the tower will comprise of approximately 440 residential units, as well as amenities such as swimming pools, changing rooms, gymnasiums, and mixed-purpose rooms along with a retail outlet and a car park with more than 500 spaces for both resident parking and additional parking to accommodate the adjacent Forte Hotel & Residences. Ramboll’s services include structural, civil, geotechnical engineering, MEP, AV, IT, fire & life safety, acoustics, façade design & BMU, as well as waste management. The firm was appointed by RSP to deliver multi-disciplinary services for the Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi. In addition, Ramboll also provided lead consultancy and design, supervision, and management services over three years on Phase 1 of the Makers District working alongside international architects BIG and MVRDV. The 18ha mixed-use development is designed as a waterfront community that cultivates creativity through residential, hospitality, commercial and retail space, with over 1,000 residential units, 11,000m2 of commercial and retail space, and a construction value of $544.5m (AED2bn). Under his leadership, Galfar is solidifying its position as one of the top performing construction companies in the region, with a speci c focus on roads and civil infrastructures. In April 2020, Galfar secured a $24.5m (OMR9.5m) contract for the Fahud Runway Rehabilitation Project from the Sultanate’s state-held Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). In December 2019, the construction rm received a “letter of award” for a project valued at $4.5m (OMR1.7m) involving the construction of a cliff road and access road; it also received a letter of intent (LOI) for a contract worth $5.7m (OMR2.2M) covering the construction of recharge dams. The company is also working on the $7bn (OMR2.69bn) Duqm Re nery, where it recently scooped a $2.3m (OMR 885,503.5) civil works contract for a tank foundation project under sub-package A of the EPC Package 3 Offsite Facilities. 45 With more than 35 years of experience in the industry, and more than 14 years as chief executive of cer of ACWA Power, Paddy Padmanathan has helped the Saudi Arabia-based developer, owner, and operator of power generation and water desalination plants retain a spot in Construction Week’s Power 100 ranking for 2020. During the past 12 months, ACWA Power – which is backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign Public Investment Fund (PIF) – has inked a number of important deals on key projects. In May 2020, a consortium of ACWA Power signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) to build and operate the 900MW Phase 5 of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park (MBR Solar Park). ACWA Power – as part of a consortium also comprising Gulf Investment Corporation (GIC), and Al Bawani Water & Power Company – also inked a 25- year water purchase agreement with the Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) after being chosen as the preferred bidder for the Jubail 3A Independent Water Plant (IWP). According to its business plan, Depa Interiors targets revenue of $46.28m (AED710m) in 2020, while Depa Group targets revenues of $517.3m (AED1.9bn) in 2020. Albizreh has led the team at Depa Interiors to provide proposals that reduce time, cost, and provide solutions on a project speci c basis, which has in turn led to contract awards worth more than $217m (AED800m), including the Abu Dhabi Mid eld Terminal, Mashreq Bank headquarters, and the FlyDubai headquarters. In addition, Depa Interiors has worked on the Sheikh Zayed Museum along with Foster + Partners; the King Abdullah Financial District metro along with Zaha Hadid (LEED Silver); the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai along with Santiago Calatrava (LEED Platinum); as well as the Address Opera Residence in Downtown Dubai. ABDOULLAH ALBIZREH DIRECTOR, DEPA INTERIORS 48 Saeed Al Abbar – who founded AESG in 2010 – has built the rm into one of the Middle East and Europe’s largest specialist consultancy, engineering, and advisory rms with a core focus on sustainable urban development. Over the past 12 months, under Saeed’s leadership, AESG posted a 35% year-on-year increase in gross revenue, and a 43% year-on-year increase in staff headcount. Dar Al Arkan is implementing projects covering a combined area of 12.4km2, which include Shams Al Riyadh, Shams Al Arous in Jeddah, and the Juman project near Dammam. Dar Al Arkan’s assets total $6.92bn (SAR26bn), with revenues of $4.65bn (SAR17.5bn) achieved over the past ve years. In addition, the company is also leveraging advanced technology, including blockchain; big data; arti cial intelligence (AI); and smart home technologies equipped with security, self- maintenance, and energy ef ciency systems. The Saudi Arabian real estate giant is best known for its Roberto Cavalli-designed Mirabilia Villas in Riyadh, as well as the I Love Florence Tower in Dubai, which is also designed by the fashion connoisseur. 49 Dubai-headquartered Beaver Gulf Group, which is headed by chairman and CEO Rajesh Kumar Krishna, has diversi ed interests in project management, construction, oil and gas EPCC, interior decoration, signs and graphics, structural steel, and real estate, across the UAE, Middle East and Asian subcontinent. Beaver Gulf Group has full- edged in-house divisions for civil construction, precast concrete products, switchgear, landscaping, re ghting, air- conditioning, structural steel, aluminium and glasing, joinery, painting, and more Rajesh Kumar Krishna has also led Beaver Gulf in its rst real estate development project – Zafran – worth $75m (AED250m), which comprises 138 townhouses and a clubhouse within the Jumeriah Golf Estates (JGE) master development. In addition, the rm’s ongoing projects in the UAE are worth more than $1bn, with approximately $400m worth of projects handed over in the last 12 months. Beaver Gulf Group is currently constructing a number of residential, of ce, and multi-storey car park buildings worth $217.8m (AED800m) for the Deira Waterfront Development. A 3,800km2 gigaproject, taking shape in north- western coast of Saudi Arabia, AMAALA was incorporated as a standalone company in September 2019. The past 12 months saw a number of activities within AMAALA. In February 2020, the rm announced its advisory board that includes the likes of top industry leaders. AMAALA recently appointed Foster + Partners, Denniston International Architects and Planners, and HKS Architects to work across its hospitality, residential, and retail portfolio. Construction work on the gigaproject will be implemented in three phases, with the company currently carrying out a feasibility study, where people on-ground have been conducting necessary assessments. Over the next year, AMAALA will complete the detailed design on Phase 1 of the gigaproject. NICHOLAS NAPLES CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, AMAALA 52 Making the Power 100 ranking once again is Richard Stratton, who climbs 41 positions this year. Under Stratton’s stewardship, international consultancy rm Cundall recorded 2019 as “an exceptional year” for its Middle East and North Africa (MENA) business. In 2019, Cundall’s MENA revenue witnessed approximately an 70% jump to $11.15m (AED40.95m), compared to 2018, while pro ts spiked by 11.38%. Cundall’s project portfolio continued to shine in 2019 as the consultancy rm worked on major construction projects including ENOC Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai; AMC Cinemas in Saudi Arabia as the multidisciplinary design consultant; and the Dark Sky Initiative for The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC), where it will design a lighting strategy for the safe movement around the 28,000km2 site of The Red Sea Project. In the past 12 months, Cundall has further developed its business into both rail and entertainment sectors; and it continues to work on “more exciting projects” in the kingdom. Cundall is also currently planning to open an of ce in Saudi Arabia. Taking its sustainability efforts to the next level, Cundall committed to make its entire business Net Zero by mid-2020 and Net Positive by 2025. Since taking up his current role in April 2019, Muir has been responsible for strengthening the leadership team with “strategic appointments” that support the contractor’s new strategy focused on engineering and consulting, asset management, and project delivery services. Last year, the company announced its plans to exit lump-sum turnkey contracting to direct its focus on services and reimbursable contracting models. The Middle East, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Kuwait are SNC-Lavalin’s key markets, where the company continues to grow its engineering services business. The company in partnership with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), has developed a Training Academy in Muscat to train Omanis in commissioning projects in the oil and gas sector. 2019 also saw the contractor bag a three-year contract worth approximately $36.9m (AED135.5m) from Al Yasat Petroleum. 53 Returning to the Power 100 list, this time with a climb of four ranks, is multi-service consultancy SSH’s Matthew Squires, who has been heading the company in his role for the past three years. Under his leadership, SSH has secured contracts for several projects in the last 12 months across the Middle East in countries including the UAE, Kuwait, Morocco, and Oman. Last year, Kuwait’s Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah Causeway Link — which SSH was appointed as the local infrastructure and construction supervision consultant by lead consultant Dar Al Handasah — was opened to the public in May. The consultancy was awarded a contract to provide masterplannning and infrastructure completion services for the $2bn (OMR770m) Mina Al Sultan Qaboos in Oman. Most recently, SSH was picked to provide design services for the new headquarters of Boubyan Bank in Kuwait City. Other projects in its portfolio include Kuwait’s Al Salam Palace, where it implemented lead design and construction supervision consultant services.
