CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT 31 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAPRIL 2023VOLVO CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT LAUNCHES NEW 33-FOOT STRAIGHT BOOM DEMOLITION EXCAVATOR CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT 32 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAPRIL 2023V olvo Construction Equipment has launched its new 30-tonne EC300E Straight Boom demolition excavator. The company also announced an industry-fi rst feature called Lifting Mode for Multi Demolition Boom that allows a high-reach demolition excavator to serve as a safe carrier for the lifting of machine components from a trailer to the ground, adding versatility to these specialized machines. “Being able to off er customers another size of straight boom excavator is exciting, and launching at the NDA show felt ideal,” said Tony den Hoed, key account director, demolition equipment at Volvo CE. “The demolition segment is ever- changing, and we are proud to keep up with it by off ering products and solutions that will keep operators safe and productive.” EC300E STRAIGHT BOOM The EC300E Straight Boom crawler excavator joins the EC380E Straight Boom model in the Volvo CE demolition lineup. Rather than the traditional boom-and-stick approach of digging- biased excavators, this crawler is fi tted with a 23-foot-long straight boom and purpose-built arm. The extra-long straight boom on the EC300E provides signifi cant height and reach advantages over the standard machine it is based on. The cab is protected against falling debris with a frame mounted ‘Falling Objects Guard’ while still providing clear views of the worksite. The roof window and front one-piece glass are made from P5A, which is resistant to high impact. The EC300E Straight Boom has a reinforced frame made of heavy-duty plate steel with bolt-head protection. There is also heavy-duty undercover protection, a belly guard and a full track guard. A slew ring cover and heavy-duty side doors with screens and shutters off er added protection. Volvo CE has also added protection on the bucket and boom cylinders. The EC300E Straight Boom comes with several standard features that are valuable in demolition applications. These include X1 and X3 auxiliary piping, a quick fi t and oil drain line, and water lines that are connected to a dust suppression system that can work in either auto or manual mode. A heavy counterweight provides balance and is easily removable for transportation. A comprehensive range of Volvo Services are available with this machine, including service plans and genuine Volvo parts from Volvo’s dedicated dealer network. Service plans can include routine wear inspections, oil analysis, full-service agreements and operator training. LIFTING MODE The new lifting mode for multi demolition boom is specifi cally designed for Volvo high-reach excavators and it off ers improved fl exibility, reduced emissions and lower total cost of ownership. It can be factory-fi tted to any of the company’s three high-reach excavators: the EC380E HR, the EC480E HR and the EC750E HR, each of which is already compatible with various extensions and booms to carry out a wide range of applications. This mode can simplify transporting equipment to jobsites because it allows the excavator to safely lift components such as cradles and digging or high reach booms from the trailer to the ground, at which point they can be safely installed on the machine. “Total cost of ownership is reduced by eliminating the need for a mobile crane or second excavator, and fl exibility is increased thanks to the time savings,” den Hoed said adding “Emissions are also reduced due to fewer vehicles being on site.” The solution consists of machine software specifi cally designed for the controlled lifting of equipment, as well as visual warnings outside the cab to warn bystanders that a lifting process is underway. The software also controls hydraulic pressure and engine speed, ensuring optimum safety throughout. This lifting mode includes a certifi ed lifting accessory, designed to fi t the patented modular joint design from the multi demolition boom and can easily be connected to the lower pin of the boom. When all components are safely unloaded, switching to the high reach or digging boom is easy, thanks to that modular hydraulic joint. Volvo CE is a leading international manufacturer of premium construction equipment, and with over 14,000 employees we are one of the largest companies in the industry. CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT 33 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAPRIL 2023A new whitepaper from Danfoss, a Danish family-controlled engineering group, highlights the vast untapped potential of excess heat generated from running engines as a source of energy. As per the report, in the EU alone, excess heat amounts to 2,860 terawatt hours per year (TWh/y) corresponding almost to the EU’s total energy demand for heat and hot water in residential and service sector buildings such as schools, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, offi ces and shopping centers. Danfoss president & CEO Kim Fausing said it is remarkable that the EU has “close to no initiatives that push for more effi cient use of the vast amounts of wasted energy in the form of excess heat.” New whitepaper details that it would give a productivity boost to the economy, EXCESS HEAT FROM ENGINES IS WORLD’S LARGEST UNTAPPED SOURCE OF ENERGY lower energy prices for consumers and businesses and accelerate the green transition. A full implementation of technologies that tap into synergies between diff erent sectors and enable a utilization of excess heat has the potential to save $72.4 billion (EUR 67.4 billion) a year once fully implemented in 2050. As per the white paper, every time an engine runs, it generates heat. Anyone who has felt the warmth behind their fridge can confi rm this. The same is true on a larger scale in supermarkets, data centers, factories, wastewater facilities, metro stations and commercial buildings. Excess heat can be reused to supply a factory with heat and warm water or reused by neighboring homes and industries through a district energy system. Using this energy that would otherwise go to waste can give a productivity boost to the economy and lower energy prices for consumers. Utilising excess heat can replace signifi cant amounts of fossil fuels that are otherwise needed to produce heat. Used this way, excess heat can help stabilise the future electricity grid and thereby ease the transition to a green energy system. In some countries the excess heat can even match the entire heat demand. In the Netherlands, excess heat amounts to 156 TWh/y while the heat demand is only 152 TWh/y. Yet the potential of excess heat is not even close to being utilized and is politically ignored. According to Fausing, recycling heat is not only an overlooked measure in the current energy crisis, but also the next frontier of the green transition. He explained that the excess heat is the world’s PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAPRIL 2023 INDUSTRY STUDY 34REUSING EXCESS HEAT IS ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN ITS PUREST FORM The whitepaper, titled ‘The world’s largest untapped energy source: Excess heat’ assesses the potential of excess heat as an effi cient energy source. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), a global push for more effi cient use of energy can reduce CO2 emissions by an additional 5 gigatons per year by 2030 compared with current policy settings. A third of the reduction needed in energy- related CO2 emissions this decade according to the IEA net zero scenario must come from improvements in energy effi ciency. In terms of energy security, these energy savings can help avoid almost 30 million barrels of oil per day and 650 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas per year (around four times what the EU imported from Russia in 2021). “The potential in reusing excess heat is staggering. But we need to change our perspective on it and begin to consider excess heat as an energy resource instead of waste to be disposed of,” Fausing said. Toby Morgan, senior Manager, built environment, climate group commented on the potential for excess heat and said, “The global energy crisis is a wakeup call to stop wasting energy, and Danfoss is right to call for governments and corporates to seize the enormous potential of excess heat. Now more than ever we need to make better use of the energy we already produce, we simply can’t aff ord to let it literally escape out the window. Energy effi ciency improvements, like capturing and recycling excess heat, are absolutely critical to lower fossil fuel demand and lower bills.” Ziad Al-Bawaliz regional president at Danfoss Turkey Middle East and Africa largest untapped source of energy. Still, very few initiatives have pushed for more effi cient use of the vast amounts of wasted energy in the form of excess heat even though we already have the solutions available today. “We urgently need policy measures to accelerate the use of excess heat across sectors, both so that citizens and businesses can benefi t from lower energy costs and to ensure we step up progress in the green transition.” “Energy demand is set to grow dramatically in the years to come due to population growth and rising incomes. Without urgent action to tackle the demand side of the green equation, using every single unit of energy more effi ciently, we will not get on track to meet global climate goals,” Fausing added. Ziad Al-Bawaliz, regional president at Danfoss Turkey, Middle East and Africa, emphasised the importance of Danfoss’ white paper aligning with UAE hosting COP28 this November: Al-Bawaliz said, “Danfoss’ latest white paper on excess heat comes at a crucial time for the UAE, as COP28 which will be held in the country approaches. With the world’s attention focused on fi nding sustainable solutions to combat climate change, this paper serves as a timely reminder of the signifi cant role excess heat recovery can play in achieving a low-carbon future. It is a valuable contribution to the ongoing dialogue on sustainable development, and an essential tool for policymakers and industry leaders alike.” INDUSTRY STUDY 35 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAPRIL 2023B y implementing fast-charging solutions that improve comfort and reduce emissions, Powertech Mobility, one of the top producers of electric vehicle infrastructure and system integrators, is hastening the process of achieving the UAE’s target of 42,000 charge sites on the streets by 2030.
