< PreviousD AF Trucks strengthened its position as a global commercial vehicle manufacturer in 2020. Market share in the European heavy duty (16 tonne+) segment grew to 16.3%, the latest generation trucks were introduced in Taiwan and Brazil, and production of the zero emission CF Electric was announced, illustrating DAF’s environmental leadership. In 2020, DAF registered 37,580 trucks on a total European heavy duty market of 230,400 vehicles, resulting in a market share of 16.3% (2019: 16.2%), which is the second best achievement in the company’s history. The European medium duty truck market (6 to 16 tonne) totalled 41,400 units and DAF’s market share was 9.5% (2019: 9.7%). DAF continued heavy duty market leadership in the Netherlands (31.8%), the UK (31.6%), Poland (23.7%), Hungary (27.9%) and Bulgaria (25,4%). The Dutch truck manufacturer also gained 2020 market leadership in Portugal (21.8%). DAF is the European leader in tractors and the number one import brand in the two largest truck markets in Europe: Germany and France. Market share in the heavy-duty rigids segment increased to 11.5%. DAF STRENGTHENS GLOBAL POSITION IN 2020 SALES OUTSIDE EUROPE Last year, DAF sold 5,880 trucks outside the EU and introduced its latest generation vehicles in Taiwan (Euro 6), Brazil (Euro 5) as well as in the Middle East and Africa (Euro 3 and 5). The 10,000th locally assembled truck was delivered in Taiwan, where DAF is the heavy-duty market leader among European manufacturers. DAF is also the market leader in Israel and Belarus. In 2020, DAF sold more than 2,000 PACCAR engines to leading manufacturers of coaches, buses and special vehicles worldwide. Richard Zink, member of the board of management with responsibility for marketing and sales, said: “In 2020, we sold a record number of DAF MultiSupport Repair and Maintenance contracts, realized a record PACCAR Financial market share and delivered a record number of DAF Used Trucks to their new owners. Our aim is to further strengthen our leading position, and that is why we are working together with our dealers to strategically expand our network of over 1,100 professional dealers and service points. Last year, for example, our independent dealers opened a total of 45 new dealerships in Europe, South America, Asia and Africa.” In addition to the continued development of combustion engine technology, DAF is investing in the latest technologies for battery and hybrid electric powertrains, supporting lower CO2 emissions and improved air quality in urban areas. In addition, as part of a fi eld test, DAF customers are already benefi ting from the advantages of the CF Hybrid truck that employs its zero emissions battery technology when driving in city areas and applies its clean diesel engine on regional routes. DAF announced production of the new CF Electric truck, off ering an extended electric range of 200 km and recently introduced the LF Electric with a 280km zero emission range. In 2020, DAF produced more than 37,600 CF and XF trucks and almost 9,000 LF vehicles. Harry Wolters, president, DAF Trucks, said: “European truck demand improved in the second half of the year along with the European economies. It is estimated that the 2021 European truck market will continue to recover and will be in the range of 250,000–280,000 trucks. We are ready for further growth by delivering our customers premium quality, exceptional fuel effi ciency and superior driver comfort.” Last year, DAF sold 5,880 trucks outside the EU and introduced its latest generation vehicles in Taiwan (Euro 6), Brazil (Euro 5) as well as in the Middle East and Africa (Euro 3 and 5) 20 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAPRIL 2021 TRUCKS (ADVERTORIAL)D AF is leading the way in electric powertrains for commercial vehicles. DAF was the fi rst European truck manufacturer to commercialise a full electric tractor: the CF Electric (GCW up to 37 tonnes), primarily for supermarket distribution and inter-urban transportation. More recently, DAF expanded its EV range with the 6x2 CF Electric rigid with steered rear axle (GVW up to 29 tonnes design), ideal for ‘zero emission’ waste collection for example. The CF Electric trucks have already clocked up several hundreds of thousands of kilometres with high profi le customers, building DAF’s experience with electric driveline technology. The new LF Electric is DAF’s latest product to feature a full-electric powertrain. The e-motor of the LF Electric provides 250 kW of nominal power (370 kW peak) and a nominal torque of 1.200 Nm (3.700 Nm peak). Power comes from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack with a gross energy content of 282 kWh (254 kWh eff ective). This off ers the LF Electric a range of no less than 280 ultra- quiet and ‘zero emission’ kilometres more than enough for the needs of urban distribution transport operators. DAF uses so-called LFP batteries (Lithium Ferro Phosphate) on all fully electric vehicles. These are batteries of the very latest generation, containing no cobalt or magnesium, in the interests of sustainability. Additionally, they are better packaged – resulting in a higher energy density per litre – and the chemistry of the battery ensures the highest thermal safety. The LFP batteries come with a 6-year warranty, illustrating DAF’s confi dence in terms of performance, reliability and durability. A special feature of the new DAF LF Electric is the ‘Combined Charging System’. This allows the truck to be charged through the regular electricity network and is ideal when the truck returns to the home base at the end of the day. Through slow-charging (400V AC, 22 kW, 3 phase), the battery pack can be charged from 20% to 80% in 6.5 hours. A full charge (0% to 100%) takes up to 12 hours. If dedicated equipment is available, fast charging the DAF INTRODUCES THE LF ELECTRIC, A 19-TONNE FULLY ELECTRIC DISTRIBUTION TRUCK WITH RANGE OF UP TO 280 KM batteries (650V DC, 150 kW) will only take 60 minutes from 20% to 80% or 2 hours for a full charge. As an option, the new DAF LF Electric is available with a 400V e-PTO for powering auxiliary equipment such as an electric cooling installation or an electro-hydraulic crane. This eliminates the need of a separate generator and will result in a full ‘zero emission’ distribution truck. The LF Electric is initially available as a 19-tonne rigid, with a choice of 5.3 or 5.85 metre wheelbases. The truck off ers a body and payload allowance of 11,700 kilograms, which is suffi cient for the majority of city distribution applications. The LF Electric benefi ts from the same distinctive DNA as its siblings with a combustion engine. Just like every LF, it off ers easy entry, excellent all-round visibility, great driver comfort and the tightest turning circle in the industry - and thus excellent manoeuvrability; it is the perfect truck of every driver in urban distribution. The DAF LF Electric, developed in close cooperation with Dana Inc, will enter production at Leyland Trucks in the UK in May. 21 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAPRIL 2021 TRUCKS (ADVERTORIAL)V olvo Trucks’ new generation of heavy-duty trucks – the Volvo FH, FH16, FM and FMX – have entered serial production in Volvo’s manufacturing plants in Sweden, Belgium and Russia. The Volvo FM and FMX trucks have a completely new cab with raised A-pillars that give drivers up to one extra cubic meter of space and increased light inside the cab. The driver’s visibility can also be improved further on all the new models by adding a passenger corner camera which provides a more complete view, covering the side of the truck, on an inside display. Other important updates are the new driver interface and the optional adaptive high beam headlights for increased safety on the Volvo FH and FH16. The new Volvo FH and FM can also be tailored to enable signifi cant fuel and CO2 savings, such as those gained on the Volvo FH with I-Save technology. The new Volvo FH, FM and FMX trucks have also been developed for electrifi ed drivelines with production start during 2022. Launched initially in Europe last year, the new heavy-duty range has received strong interest from customers, with over 12,000 trucks ordered in 2020. The launch and sales activities continue during 2021 in markets outside Europe. The trucks will initially be assembled at the Volvo Trucks’ production facilities in Gothenburg, Sweden, Ghent in Belgium and Kaluga in Russia. Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks, said: “We are very excited that our new generation of trucks will soon be reaching our valued customers. All four truck models have been developed with a strong focus on improving the driver environment, safety and productivity of the vehicles, making them more effi cient than their predecessors. Bringing out a new truck range requires strong engineering work as well as major teamwork across the entire Volvo organization, including our suppliers, which makes this production start extra special for all involved, especially considering the challenging year we just went through.” VOLVO TRUCKS STARTS SERIAL PRODUCTION OF NEW GENERATION FH, FH16, FM AND FMX MODELS 22 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAPRIL 2021 TRUCKSU S-based electric vehicle company Canoo has unveiled a fully-electric pickup truck that off ers 320+ km of battery range. With 20 operational bases, covering the UAE, KSA, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain, Byrne has a fl eet of over 14,000 equipment and a team of over 1,500 people. Byrne off ers high-quality equipment rental solutions to a broad variety of industry sectors including but not limited to oil and gas; con- struction and infrastructure; events; manu- facturing and logistics; retail and commercial; marine and ports; defense and military; and medical. The range of equipment is diverse and ever growing for applications in power generation, sanitation, material handling, temporary buildings, mobile lighting, air and steam, cargo containers, welding, hoist and access, power access and climate control. Pat Fallon, group deputy CEO, Byrne Equip- ment Rental, says: “As a group we consistently work hard to ensure that our rental fl eet is constantly updated to carry the latest and most effi cient brands of equipment and the new additions to the fl eet support Byrne’s suc- cessful single source supplier model approach, satisfying all customer requirements in all segments of trade and industry.” The earlier part of the past couple of years was focused on diversifying Byrne's products and services. "We added climate control to align with our existing power generation fl eet. We added powered access to join our existing hoist and access fl eet, and we added some unique new structures for the rental market mainly fo- cused on oil and gas. 2020 also saw the launch of our Power Projects division to improve our turkey solutions for clients’ diversifi ed de- mand, especially in the utilities and oil and gas industries. Combining the superior resources of strategic partners, we are off ering new power solutions for lower emissions, such as gas power (NG & LNG) and even hybrid power. Byrne is also planning to increase the quan- tity of large generator sets in our fl eet to grow in line with anticipated future demand in the post-COVID period. There was so much set to happen over the course of 2020 and whilst a certain resilience has been maintained through the pandemic, many things had to be put on hold most notably the events side of our business which has had to take a backseat because it has not been possible to hold large scale events which is a huge part of our busi- ness,” Pat explains. Byrne has delivered a number of major rent- al projects towards the tail end of 2020 into 2021 across the GCC. Most recently in KSA, its Power Projects division completed contracts for the supply of 24MVA temporary power for 18 months to a ceramic manufacturer as well as 13MVA power supply for a private mining company. Byrne also supplied a refi nery proj- ect with 8MVA power @13.8KV in the eastern region of the Kingdom. “Overall within our operations we adapted very quickly to the COVID-19 crisis. We took people who were typically operating in the events and oil and gas sectors, and we quickly deployed them to support governments and health services across the region to rapidly set up quarantine centres to fi ght the pandemic. We did this most notably in the UAE and Saudi Arabia and to a lesser extent in Oman. To suc- cessfully shift from oil and gas and events to meet demand driven by the pandemic is a tes- tament to the agility of the company, its capa- bilities and its people,” says Pat. "We believe that 2021 will allow us to emerge from COVID-19 and be able to return to some sort of normal. The market remains strong, albeit competitive. We have been through downturns before, probably never on a scale like this, but we also believe that with every downturn, there’s an upturn and we are going to emerge stronger. Times like this tend to push you towards reviewing your processes, and operational effi ciency, but it sharpens our focus on the most likely areas of new business. In the Middle East, the rental industry is by international standards quite immature. It is getting stronger and becoming more in demand all the time, with more players com- ing into the market. There’s a bright future for it, no doubt. However, there is work to do in terms of bringing into being a model that can penetrate more widely into diff erent indus- tries," Pat concludes.POWER LIST 28 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESAPRIL 2021www.plantmachineryvehicles.com KANRENT MUNEER CHAN BASHA SALES MANAGER -RENTAL, UAE K anoo Equipment Rental (KANRENT) is a member of the Kanoo Group, one of the largest family owned business groups in the region, with over 130 years of ex- perience in the Middle East and international markets. O.rentals is a cost-eff ective alternative to owning capital intensive machinery. If you are a startup that doesn’t wish to purchase expensive machinery, or a company restricted by limitations to increase your inventory, then O.rentals off ers the perfect solution.” Over the years, a steep incline in e-com- merce has increased the demand for material handling equipment. To cater to this rising customer need, O.rentals boasts the largest fl eet of material handling equipment in the UAE – over 600 machines (with 85% rented) that include electric, diesel, manual and auto- mated versions. “We know the importance of productivity in an agile warehouse, and why our customers need the optimal machines for handling (in- and-out) their merchandise. We look to build strategic partners in our material handling and intralogistics service customers. We ser- vice the handling of a wide range of product types including glass, paper, and food across multiple sectors and industries including third-party logistics, airports and manufac- turing facilities. We understand the fl exibility required by rental companies; that’s why our material handling equipment is available for short-term rent starting from one day to long- term leases of up to fi ve years and beyond, al- lowing our customers to focus on their core business activities,” says Al Shirawi. They include three cranes in Mozambique, Africa, to prepare the ground to build a gas production facility and four cranes on the Hail and Ghasha Island in UAE. The remaining seven cranes were deployed to the other side of the globe in Mexico, along with 25 person- nel including operators and technicians, spare parts and workshop containers, ensuring maintenance and repairs can be carried out on-site with the maximum uptime. “Dynamic compaction projects come sever- al hassles, especially if they are remote. That’s why a number of our clients who own cranes still use O.rentals for remote-projects, because we take the stress out of maintenance and re- pairs and assure completion on time, to avoid costly penalties. Our fl eet of cranes have been used for nu- merous notable projects across the UAE, Mid- dle East, and beyond, such as the three Palm Islands in Dubai; all major oil and gas islands in the UAE; the Dhaka Metro in Bangladesh; and the Dos Bocas Refi nery in Mexico, to name a few. We have expanded our geographical footprint through our outreach programmes. Our fl eet of crawler cranes are well travelled; from the start of our business, our cranes have been servicing areas outside the UAE. In the early 2000s, cranes for our fi rst project landed directly from the factory to a jobsite in Saudi Arabia. Since then, they have been used in all the Emirates within the UAE, all GCC coun- tries, Singapore, Turkmenistan, Bangladesh, Mexico and Mozambique. We continue to look to the future with excitement and look forward to having our cranes reach all continents on the map, while expanding our fl eet to gain continuous rental contracts all over the world,” says Al Shirawi.Next >
