Lootah Group, is also the visionary Founder and CEO of Lootah Biofuels. Al Lootah, one of the youngest and most dynamic Emirati CEOs, has carved a niche for himself as a pioneer in the biofuel sector in the UAE. His leadership encompasses the strategic direction, expansion, and daily operations of Lootah Biofuels, both domestically and on the international stage. In establishing Lootah Biofuels, Al Lootah aimed to foster a market for sustainable energy solutions that address the long-term energy needs of the UAE and beyond. Under his stewardship, the company has launched numerous sustainable initiatives that have positioned it at the forefront of the biofuels industry. Notably, Al Lootah spearheaded the production of biofuels derived from used cooking oil, a venture that not only achieved significant success but also led to a strategic partnership with Malaysia’s FatHopes Energy. This collaboration aims to establish a comprehensive supply chain for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) within the region, further cementing Lootah Biofuels’ role as a leader in sustainable energy innovation. Prior to the inception of Lootah Biofuels, Al Lootah was deeply engaged in the sustainability initiatives of S.S. Lootah Group. He played an instrumental role in the Green Car Programme, a pioneering project that has seen remarkable progress since its launch. The programme began with the conversion of part of the company fleet to compressed natural gas (CNG) and has evolved to incorporate hybrid, electric, biodiesel, and solar- powered vehicles. These efforts reflect Al Lootah’s commitment to reducing the carbon footprint and promoting renewable energy sources. Al Lootah’s ambitious vision extends beyond immediate achievements. He is dedicated to transforming the transportation landscape in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, striving to achieve 70% sustainable and renewable transportation. His efforts are not just about meeting present- day energy demands but are also focused on ensuring a sustainable and environmentally responsible future for the region. Drawn to the energy sector’s opportunities, Rasso believes in its potential to address climate change and enhance energy security. Al Masaood Power Division is a key player in the energy landscape of the UAE and is the partner for a wide range of applications and solutions by MTU, Volvo Penta, and Leroy Somer. The company has dedicated considerable efforts to the decarbonisation and energy transition agenda of the UAE, having launched SHAMS+, an emission-free, off-grid solar solution, presented at the COP28 UAE in 2023. With this microgrid solution, Al Masaood’s Power Division, powered the region’s first carbon-negative project by delivering emission-free energy to a carbon capture development. Al Masaood Power Division has been the recipient of multiple accolades from its global principles, having been named “Partner of the Year 2023” by MTU for its outstanding performance and surpassing sales targets. Volvo Penta also recognised Al Masaood Power as Importer of the Year for 2023, and Leroy Somer granted them Partner of the Year Award in 2023 after achieving significant growth over a period of two years. The division has also launched the Al Masaood Mechatronics Apprenticeship Program –characterized by a competency-based approach that includes more than 100 hours of practical, on-the-job training for aspiring Emirati engineers. In alignment with the UAE government’s goals, this initiative aims to aid the energy transition by creating a generation of trained and experienced engineers. In addition to the energy trends he has already identified, Bartenschlager foresees the increasing importance of energy efficiency and demand-side management in the coming years. As the world’s population and energy demands continue to grow, optimizing energy consumption and reducing waste will become critical to achieving global sustainability goals. The implementation of circular economy principles in the energy sector, through initiatives like waste-to-energy projects and the recycling of end-of-life solar panels and batteries, is helping to reduce waste, conserve resources, and minimize the environmental impact of the energy transition. He also anticipates that emerging economies will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the energy sector, as they grapple with the dual challenges of expanding access to energy and mitigating the environmental impacts of development. With presence in more than 15 countries, Nabors has established a global network of people, technology and equipment to deploy solutions that deliver safe, efficient and responsible energy production. The guiding vision for the company’s energy transition initiatives and broader sustainability strategy is delivering “energy without compromise.” Believing renewable energy and socially responsible hydrocarbons are required to realise a sustainable energy mix, Nabors is leveraging innovation, collaboration and investments to lower emissions from operations and accelerate the growth and commercialisation of its clean energy portfolio companies. Core to this effort is Nabors’ investment strategy, led by Guillermo Sierra. Guillermo has led the company to invest in 10 clean energy technology companies. Spanning geothermal, concentrated solar, alternative energy storage, emissions monitoring, hydrogen and advanced materials, the portfolio is designed to decarbonise power generation, heavy industry and other hard-to-abate sectors. Nabors has been creative to access additional capital. Nabors raised $581 million through the initial public offerings of two Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPAC). Guillermo was vital to these transactions. Under his leadership, the first SPAC merged with Vast Renewables in 2022, taking Vast public on the NASDAQ exchange, with Nabors retaining a substantial equity stake in Vast. The second SPAC is currently evaluating combination targets. “Working in the energy sector is incredibly fulfilling for several reasons,” says Guillermo. “The energy sector is harnessing technological innovation more than ever before. Being part of an industry that is constantly evolving and finding new ways to solve complex problems is exciting.” GUILLERMO SIERRA Nabors Vice President, Energy Transition & Strategic Ventures OAG_World Energy Transition Leaders 2024_34-35_Nabors_13325027.indd 35OAG_World Energy Transition Leaders 2024_34-35_Nabors_13325027.indd 3510/07/2024 09:1710/07/2024 09:1736 OAG_World Energy Transition Leaders 2024_36-37_HE Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri_13330952.indd 36OAG_World Energy Transition Leaders 2024_36-37_HE Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri_13330952.indd 3610/07/2024 09:1810/07/2024 09:1837 Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri is the UAE’s Minister of Climate Change and Environment.
