In the 5,193 square-foot four-bedroom residence, featuring four-and-a-half baths and a 42-foot- deep terrace with a bayfront-refl ecting pool, Rita looked to the furniture designs of fashion icon Jean Paul Gaultier’s collection for Roche Bobois as an example of mastering multidisciplinary thinking. Gaultier’s original collection for Bobois featured a toned-down colour palette of whites and neutrals with clean lines and lush textures, revealing a more gentler side to his imagination. Rita sourced furniture and also brought in a custom teak canopy, a sculptural cantilevered marble island in Calacatta Gold and refl ective Poliform cabinetry to the kitchen. The designer sought to emulate Gaultier’s signature playful yet intricate handling of form. Making sure to avoid excess and overwhelming of the senses, the open view onto Miami’s waters was a predominant and neutralising guiding line for Rita, acting as an endpoint of perspective in the living areas. “Every decision made was to highlight the stunning view of the water and surrounding life,” she says. With sculptures and paintings by Italian painter Marco Grassi, all sourced from Galleria Ca’ d’Oro, Rita also introduced the body throughout the property as a central binding site to rejoin the multiple forms of art present. “Fashion, art and design enrich our lives by offering us the opportunity for expression,” she says. “I’m so passionate about these fi elds and blending them to achieve the extraordinary. The point of divergence is simply how creation emerges.” intdesigners.com Interior view of the powder room; the entryway at Monad Terrace HBI_047_48-51_DESIGN FOCUS_Monad Terrace_11373637.indd 5104/10/2020 06:19:13 PM52 HarpersBazaarArabia.com/Culture/Interiors Autumn 2020 OKHA, in collaboration with ARRCC and renowned architect Stefan Antoni, has injected new life into a luxury safari lodge called Cheetah Plains set in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, writes Athwifa Saleem A S A F A R I S T O R Y Photography by ADAM LETCH HBI_047_52-55_DESIGN FOCUS_Cheetah_11373918.indd 5204/10/2020 06:20:08 PM53 HarpersBazaarArabia.com/Culture/Interiors Autumn 2020 DESIGN FOCUS Facing page: Central living area featuring custom dining table and Tofu chairs by OKHA. Deep rich earth tones, sienna, rust, ochre and copper are some of the shades that have been implemented within the space, recalling the surrounding African landscape of the lodge. Marble and stone were chosen according to the grain and colour of nature’s elements. “We wanted to design pieces that felt like an internal landscape, using Clockwise from this picture: Custom timber server, candlesticks and circular copper framed mirror, all OKHA; Nancy barstool by OKHA; Exterior view of the lodge HBI_047_52-55_DESIGN FOCUS_Cheetah_11373918.indd 5404/10/2020 06:20:22 PMDESIGN FOCUS materials that have inherent value and beauty which evolve and improve over time in the same way that this process happens organically in the external landscape,” expresses OKHA’s Creative Director, Adam Court. The spaces all have large glass panels which slide away, opening the space up seamlessly to the surrounding landscape. In harmony with the major refl ection of the lodge, brass clad table bases were intricately sculpted, paired with custom Tofu dining chairs which are upholstered with a bronze-coloured leather seat and back, complementing the dining table’s solid brass decals. Other bespoke elements within the lodge of note include OKHA’s Nancy barstools in a custom metallic-coloured leather, a tailored brass footrest, unique wood stain Nicci armchairs, Barnett dining chairs in a sunfl ower yellow velvet, Bijou marble side tables in antique brass with a Nero Marquina marble tabletop, candleholders made from iroko wood, circular copper-framed mirrors with matching servers and custom life- size totems which recall a contemporary and primeval age combined. “Working in such an intuitive, instinctive, almost primal way, being led by the materials and the shapes created by nature was a gift,” expresses Court. “The raw material itself and the wild mass of external landscape that surrounds you in a place like the Sabi Sands led the way.” okha.com Clockwise from top: De Riguour standing lamp; The Barnett dining chair; Bijou Marble side table made from beaten antique solid marble brass and Nero Marquina marble top; Laguna coffee table, All OKHA; Lobby view of the lodge HBI_047_52-55_DESIGN FOCUS_Cheetah_11373918.indd 5504/10/2020 06:20:32 PMCREDIT HERE 56 HarpersBazaarArabia.com/Culture/Interiors Autumn 2020 CO U N T R YS I D E Marvel HBI_047_56-59_FEATURE_Cotswold village_11375271.indd 5604/10/2020 06:22:15 PMCREDIT HERE 57 HarpersBazaarArabia.com/Culture/Interiors Autumn 2020 The FEATURE Wilkinson Beven Design, in collaboration with luxury furniture design house Boca do Lobo has just revamped a rural home nestled in the charming village of Cotswolds, situated in Southern England, writes Athwifa Saleem Balcony and living room view of the revamped rural home in the village of Cotswolds featuring luxury furniture by Boca do Lobo HBI_047_56-59_FEATURE_Cotswold village_11375271.indd 5704/10/2020 06:22:22 PMondon-based design fi rm Wilkinson Beven is renowned for innovative, luxury interior design projects, spanning elegant residential interiors of private residences in London to Caribbean beach villas and luxury ski chalets in Courchevel. From the structural space-planning, furniture layouts, lighting to the selection of materials, balanced to reveal a unique home that is novel to the owners, the studio’s newest project in the village of Cotswolds was intricately designed. The abode is set on the brow of a hill, spanning breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside. The rural home features white walls and ceiling-high windows, allowing an abundance of natural light to fi ll the space. The main living space is split by a wood fi replace, a bar and library, which is enhanced by a basement extension with an opulent home cinema. Surrounding the contemporary fi replace are armchairs and a stone side table by Boca do Lobo which gracefully complement the warm, inviting setting. The luxe home embraces a Hollywood-themed theatre featuring chic, built-in speakers and an audio-visual kit, while the bespoke wall panels add subtle elegance, adding to the acoustics of the space. The stone and timber fl oors are inspired by the beauty of nature outside, and pieces such as the oak bentwood pendant and the hand-stitched leather handrail leading down to the grape cellar add to the fi ne craftsmanship. Marrying elements from nature and modern design, the refurbishment of the rural home has resulted in a harmonious blend of luxury, nature and design. ■ wilkinsonbeven.com, bocadolobo.com Above: Interior views of the home.
