Highly skilled workers are making themselves known to hiring managers at a moment’s notice with two magic words: “Interested please”. I’m writing this a few days after April Fool’s Day, letting out a big sigh as I continue to see hundreds of lazy, pseudo ‘job applications’ ood my LinkedIn page. There is perhaps no faster way to disqualify yourself from a run at a new job than to waste three seconds typing out “interested”, or worse “interesting”. Yes, we see your comment and, no, we do not click on your pro le. It isn’t out of spite, if we had the time, we would surely nd a ‘diamond in the rough’ somewhere in the sea of comments. However, we have hundreds of genuine, well-thought-out and articulate applications emailed to us that we have to prioritise. As humans, we tend to opt for the path of least resistance, but that shouldn’t apply to your job hunting. Put the time in, go through the proper channels and make a case for yourself that does your work accomplishments and experience justice. What really boggles my mind about it is, what if their current boss sees? LinkedIn, as a platform, is all about creating your professional network. Surely your boss will end up seeing the comment, eventually. If the golden opportunity of your lifetime appears on your LinkedIn feed, stop yourself, don’t comment. Instead, click on the pro le, see what the hiring manager is looking for, read the job description, see if your skills and experience line up, and only then should you start constructing your application for it. Sadly, many ‘hiring managers’ are wise to the gravitational pull of job ads. Many, who are not even involved in that hotel, will repost job ads, knowing it will get traction in the comments and then boost the poster’s own pro le and follower count. To what bene t I’m not sure, but it is yet another example of how commenting below job ads does little more than waste everyone’s time.
