While there are no lions, tigers or bears — unless a visit to Taronga Zoo is on the cards — the New South Wales capital is an urban oasis of golden beaches, world-famous landmarks and exceptional restaurants and bars. Sydney’s way of living is one of a kind, too. Whether you visit in a sweltering summer or a mild winter (the temperature here rarely drops below 13°C), a vibrant outdoor lifestyle is a staple in every season. Expect to dine alfresco, clink cold drinks glasses at an open-air bar and spend weekends trawling farmers’ markets or basking by the ocean, artisan coff ee in hand. The combination of a cosmopolitan city with a balmy, subtropical climate makes Sydney one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. And as the oldest and largest city in Australia — spanning more than 12,000 square kilometres of rugged coastlines, cool neighbourhoods and a bustling city centre — there’s no shortage of places to discover. The only question is, how does one experience everything Sydney has to off er? With an insider’s Little Black Book, of course. As a writer who has lived and currently works in Sydney, I know how to make the most of every whirlwind trip down south — from where to fi nd the best coff ee (hint: order the oat iced latte on tap at Surry Hills’ Single O) to the latest art exhibitions on display. Unmissable landmarks The Sydney Opera House is one of those rare attractions that not only lives up to the hype but surpasses the imagination. Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the building is perched on the edge of Circular Quay and is instantly recognisable for its gleaming roof structure T — inspired by the billowing white sails of ships and the geometric spirals of seashells. The harbourfront multi-venue performing arts centre is a masterpiece of 20th century architecture, and the perfect place to kick off a Sydney voyage whether it’s your fi rst time or not. No matter how many times I’ve seen the building silhouetted at sunset or the iconic sails illuminated at night, it’s grandiosity never fails to inspire. Book tickets to see a show within this Unesco World Heritage Site (which is the home of Opera Australia and The Australian Ballet) or dine in at executive chef Peter Gilmore’s Bennelong for front- row views of the yacht-studded harbour. You’ll need a reservation for the restaurant, but walk-ins are welcome at the bar. Otherwise, it’s free to IMA GE S: UNSPLASH/ SAMWERMUT ; SHUTTERST OCK EtA_10Aug2024_EN_24-33_Travel-Australia_13325234.indd 2722/07/2024 11:0828 | ATLAS BY ETIHAD | August 2024 explore the venue and its surrounds on foot. Adjacent to the opera house is the heritage- listed Royal Botanic Garden. Thirty lush hectares of rolling lawns, native and international plants and themed gardens such as the Cadigal display — acknowledging the original inhabitants of the city centre — fringe the water. Stroll through this verdant sanctuary in the heart of the city for panoramic vistas and wildlife sightings (keep an ear out for squabbling cockatoos). On the western side of Circular Quay, you can’t miss the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Aff ectionately dubbed “the coathanger”, this photogenic landmark is the largest single arched bridge in the world, spanning around 500 metres. For a close-up look, explore the district tucked beneath the steel bridge: The Rocks. As the oldest colonial neighbourhood in Sydney, The Rocks marks the spot where European settlers arrived with the First Fleet in 1788 on the land of the Gadigal people. Now, it’s an atmospheric area that stacks 19th-century sandstone buildings alongside heritage pubs, shopping boutiques and art galleries like the Museum of Contemporary Art, which features impressive permanent works by prominent Aboriginal artists. I like to browse the open-air weekend markets or indulge in a glass of the New Frontier at The Rocks’ award-winning bar Maybe Sammy; this cocktail is served with a scratchy that could win you a bar snack. Cool neighbourhoods Once the bucket-list sights are ticked off , turn to places that give an insight into how the locals live. Bypass the Central Business District (CBD) — a labyrinth of skyscrapers and crawling with commuters during the work week — for the more characterful inner-city neighbourhoods. A brilliant place to stay, Surry Hills is a 10-minute drive east of the CBD and a hive of creativity. Lined with Victorian terrace houses, the main artery takes you past independent bookstores, tasteful boutiques, cult gelateria Messina (the dulce de leche gelato is my desert island fl avour) and all-day dining options, such as the famous Bills. With two more locations in Sydney at Darlinghurst and Bondi, and several more outposts around the world, Bills is the foundation of Australian café culture and the kitchen behind now-popular brunch plates like avocado on toast, corn fritters and ricotta hotcakes with honeycomb butter. The Art Deco interiors pair brown leather banquettes with marble-topped tables and Australian artworks, making Surry Hills’ Bills feel like your second (more stylish) home. Another must-see neighbourhood is Paddington, if only for the window shopping. This fashionable district is home to the city’s best retail strips, starring Australian designers like Zimmermann and Lee Mathews. For a more bohemian spirit, head to inner-west suburb Newtown. If Surry Hills is for morning outings, Newtown is for craft beer after dark. Expect to see an eclectic blend of street art, thrift shops, watering holes (try Japanese vinyl bar Ante) and a diverse food scene owing to its tight-knit multicultural community.
