The reason? The famed pizza al taglio, with every slice created from a 50-year-old sourdough starter and topped with fresh ingredients straight from Italy. Now, there are two more branches in the city, each with its own unique identity and off ering (but don’t worry, the pizza is a mainstay on every menu). Antonia Chic is the latest, opening at The Galleria Al Maryah Island in May this year. In keeping with its location, the restaurant has been given a rather chic upgrade. Out are the teal and red hues and simple metal chairs, at the 1960s-inspired Antonia Chic it’s all plush red velvet seating, marble table tops and black and white stripes. Much like the fi rst branch, Antonia Chic doesn’t accept reservations, so you may have a short wait before dining. The menu has been elevated, too, with a focus on raw and cooked fi sh, plus a number of Antonia Chic-exclusive plates such as the braised veal ossobuco, the Mediterranean-style red snapper and the sautéed fi sh of the day. If you want to explore the original menu, the supplì or crispy risotto balls are a good place to start, followed by a margherita or bresaola pizza. For purists, the Roman classics pasta menu will be calling your name – the cacio e pepe proves that sometimes simplicity is best, and there’s certainly no cream added to the carbonara. Pop over to the gelato counter to see the fl avours of the day, each made fresh every two hours, or try the signature tiramisu to fi nish. Chef and founder Simone Federici is the driving force behind the brand, but we’d be remiss not to mention the origin of the sourdough (and the name of the restaurant): his nonna Antonia. The Italian chef uses many of her recipes, and has said that he was inspired by her simple cooking style. While many will stumble upon Antonia Chic on a visit to The Galleria, for foodies, Antonia Chic is worth heading out of your way for. And if you don’t manage to make it inside, you can also grab a slice of the famed Antonia pizza at Zayed International Airport’s Bottega Bar. antoniarestaurant.com.
