< PreviousROOFING, CLADDING & WATERPROOFING 40 CONSTRUCTION WEEK JUNE 2021 BY Molly R It’s important that experts step in to give the right advice and solutions MAKE THEM STRONG Any home will make sure to see that certain el- ements that make a home safe are firmly in place. On the exterior, the ones that are affect- ed first is roofing, cladding and waterproofing. Usually, these jobs are left to the contractor and most home owners are quite ignorant about the materials and prefer not to deal with it. There are various trends emerging here too. Piyush Na- har, GM, marketing, Tata Bluescope Steel, says, “Resi- dential roofing is now focussing on aesthetics and sus- tainability. Solar compatible roofing system is preferred by specifiers and home builders. Roofs that perform well under terse environments like wet hilly terrains, high wind zones, arid environments, and have greater load bearing capacity, offer greater thermal efficiency along with superior aesthet- ics, have gained importance. Lately, this sector has wit- nessed greater acceptability for colour coated steel roofs. With multiple colour options and patterns to choose from; our DURASHINE roof is a compelling choice that combines superior aesthetics, design flexibility, thermal efficiency with greater performance; giving the home-owner an assured peace of mind.” Similarly with cladding systems, sustainability has crept in here too. Ashwani Khanna, AVP, marketing, FunderMax India, says, “High-rises, commercial and residential build- ings, office spaces, government buildings all benefit by ap- propriately designed cladding. To add to the sustainability factor, Fundermax provides rain screen façade system that ROOFING, CLADDING & WATERPROOFING CONSTRUCTION WEEK JUNE 2021 41 user business and services, Pidilite Industries, says, “The golden rule in any successful waterproofing is using the se- lection of right product and right applicator. Waterproofing being an applicator’s job, selection of the right applicator plays an important role in ensuring successful waterproof- ing. Similarly, selection of right system and right products based on the specific requirements of the project is also im- portant in ensuring the right waterproofing. Most common failures occur at construction joints, junctions of horizontal and vertical members and cut outs. They all require proper designing and use of correct materials.” HIGH-RISES, COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS, OFFICE SPACES, GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS ALL BENEFIT BY APPROPRIATELY DESIGNED CLADDING. ASHWANI KHANNA RESIDENTIAL ROOFING IS NOW FOCUSSING ON AESTHETICS AND SUSTAINABILITY. SOLAR COMPATIBLE ROOFING SYSTEM IS PREFERRED BY SPECIFIERS AND HOME BUILDERS. PIYUSH NAHAR improves building protection by enhancing functionality of façade with respect to heat and noise reduction, and bet- ter weather protection. A well-designed façade reduces the thermal bridges, condensation of water vapour, protects the building and increases sustainability. Some benefits can be: sustainable and durable façade; structurally designed fa- çade to sustain harsh exterior conditions; and considerable reduction in energy costs for heating and air-conditioning.” One cannot forget the importance of waterproofing here. Himanshu Kapadia, CEO, construction chemicals, large FunderMax has always brought a novel touch to its facades and claddings.ROOFING, CLADDING & WATERPROOFING 42 CONSTRUCTION WEEK JUNE 2021 MAKE IT NICE Market demand for building products is usually determined by growth in infrastructure, SME and retail segment. Of late India has emerged as one of the key markets for pre-en- gineered buildings. Warehousing and industrial segments being the main drivers, the PEB market size is estimated to grow at a double-digit CAGR for next five years. Nahar says, “Personal consumption is expected to revive and likely to be around FY20 levels in FY22 subject to how vaccinations im- prove. Retail would be resilient for some time. Government and private projects are now subdued but expected to revive in FY22. Favorable policies like PLI scheme could attract for- eign investment and increase private manufacturing capex. Robust infrastructure projects for next 5-6 years are visible in Metros, freight corridors along with National Infrastruc- ture Pipeline.” Speaking about how cladding has evolved, Lakshay Jindal, director and CMO, Jindal Mecho Bricks, says, “In the past, cladding tiles have been used in bedrooms, lobby area, entrance foyer, dining area, kitchen, study, living area, verandah and many more. Our cladding tile wall is also used to highlight artifacts or photos. The tiles are one of the most preferred materials for owners of premium luxury spaces. This is because of negligible maintenance of these tiles, the subtle colors, endless design options and easy installation.” One of the new solutions from FunderMax, the Max Lato series aims at providing better visual comfort to occu- pants. These shading systems come in different sizes and configurations and can be used to mitigate the effects of glare and heat ingress in different kind of buildings located across the country. Max Lato is an effective way to reduce air conditioning loads. Khanna says, “It offers designers an opportunity to create a distinctive architectural impact. This new-age shading system has slats made of Max Ex- terior panels of Fundemax that can be fixed at any position according to the building location. Another new system in the offering is the rivetless soffit system from Fundermax, FS01. The objective is to achieve a seamless and unhin- dered view with smaller strips (width of panels), and closed grooves.” MOST COMMON FAILURES OCCUR AT CONSTRUCTION JOINTS, JUNCTIONS OF HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL MEMBERS AND CUT OUTS. HIMANSHU KAPADIA Leakage in the interior of a functioning commercial complex.Leakage in a precast structure.ROOFING, CLADDING & WATERPROOFING CONSTRUCTION WEEK JUNE 2021 43 THE TILES ARE ONE OF THE MOST PREFERRED MATERIALS FOR OWNERS OF PREMIUM LUXURY SPACES. LAKSHAY JINDAL layer to the bituminous concrete, in addition to ensure com- plete waterproofing to the structure. Similarly waterproofing to the basements of a hospital or a mall should be designed considering the usage as service area, which may not be the case for residential basements. Precast and compos- ite deck slabs need a better system of waterproofing when compared to an in-site concrete building because of struc- tural requirements.” Pidilite maintains an in-house expert design team to de- sign the right system of waterproofing. They believe in offer- ing an entire solution under one umbrella and have a range of products for projects, repairs and maintenance catering to the requirements of all types of buildings, industries and infrastructures. Whatever be the case, owners and developers must en- sure that the job is done right. Ashoka University. Waterproofing needs to be designed as per requirement. Kapadia says, “For example, a waterproofing system for a bridge should also be able to take care of continuous move- ment of the vehicles and proper bonding of waterproofing 32nd avenue claddig using Jindal Techno products.44 CONSTRUCTION WEEK JUNE 2021 WEBINAR - HVAC BY Team CW Construction Week and LG Electronics India discovered through a webinar on ways to better air quality BREATHE EASY The pandemic is always teaching people new things and novel ways of living. Basically, it’s a trial and error method. The malevolent virus is also expected to change plenty of things in the back-end and most are still trying to figure out what. However, one thing that will change is the HVAC sys- tems that is common everywhere. Seeking to know more, Construction Week along with LG Electronics organised a webinar, How you need to look at HVAC post-covid. Moderated by Pankaj Dharkar, founder, Pankaj Dharkar & Associates, the panellists comprised Mili Majumdar, MD, GBCI; Richie Mittal, director, Overdrive Engg and immediate past president of ISHRAE; Stephen Lasrado, associate VP – MEP, K Raheja Corp; Pradeep CS, associate VP – MEP design, Lodha Group; and Naveen Raj, zonal head, LG system air-conditioning division, LG Electronics India. The seasoned and reputed veteran in MEP, Dharkar be- gan with a presentation that highlighted certain aspects of MEP and its relevance to today’s buildings. He shot his first question to Mittal asking, “In April 2020, ISHRAE released a covid-19 guidance document for HVAC. Tell us about the pa- rameters of air quality that impact the transmission of coro- navirus. Mittal: We had much research when we were compiling that document. But WHO has said that it is air-borne and re- mains suspended as a particle. We have spoken about tem- perature and humidity, and about different applications such as residential, commercial, and industrial. We are working on a revised report now. We are going to touch on the im- portance of ventilation, active filtration, which uses various ionisation and other technologies. Then we are going to talk about air distribution parameters and touch on few applica- tions like banks, offices, lifts, saloon, ATMs, which comes in direct contact with users. Then we are going to touch on how HOW YOU NEED TO LOOK AT HVAC POST-COVID th 7 MAY 2021 LIVE WEBINAR Powered By PresentsMODErATOrPANELLiSTS Pankaj Dharkar Consultant, Pankaj Dharkar & Associates Stephen Lasrado Associate VP – MEP, K Raheja Corp. How does certification at GBCI create awareness of IAQ importance? Majumdar: It is important for us to look at IAQ given today’s pandemic and, yes, there are challenges. Particularly in India, outdoor air quality is very poor, so it comes at a cost. The cost here is the cost of deploying the technology, deploying source control as well as an energy cost. Because if we better ven- tilation, add filters, increase filtration, that not only increases energy cost, energy consumption but will also have a higher maintenance cost. So, through the rating system, what we do is try to balance these impacts. Because we know that, in practical, applications, O&M cost will be very crucial. So, in LEED, particularly, we have rating systems for different typol- ogies of buildings which is residential, commercial and other typologies. Dharkar: Stephen, what are the fundamental challenges that people face today in cities with high PM levels with regard to sick building syndrome? And what are the challenges ex- pected in HVAC systems, especially in high-rises? Lasrado: About 99% of the time, we are all indoors. A sick building syndrome is a condition where people suffer head- aches or chronic coughs and sore throats, which then affects productivity of people. Various studies have shown that the wellbeing of people is directly linked with IAQ. The causes are inadequate ventilation within the indoor spaces, and the high level of pollution outside, filtration of outside air indoors and the high level of particular matter, PM 2.5 to PM 10 actually, adversely affects the health of people. Then there are the vol- atile organic compounds in indoor places, which are gener- ally five times higher than outdoor spaces. Use of paints and interior materials - wood or disinfectants being used with the indoor spaces actually contribute to this. Dharker: Pradeep, in terms of air quality, how do you think planning of cities and neighbourhoods should change post covid? Pradeep: In this pandemic, cities or urban areas are becom- ing covid hotspot. Nearly 50% covid cases are registered in cities that have 14-15% population of the total population in India. So, there is a need to build more resilient cities to deal with such problems. There are studies conducted for the reason behind these cities becoming a hotspot. Density of population in cities is too high and so also economic activi- ties. Environment, air and water quality is poor because of the dense population. Steps that can be taken to change this is to increase open spaces, implement walk-to-work concept, and ease access to daily needs. We need to use more electric ve- hicles, make buildings see more natural light and ventilation. Dharker: How would you look at tweaking HVAC systems today? Naveen: Coming back to systems during this pandemic, we have focused on three parameters. One is environmental where our systems are designed to affect the environment in a lesser way. Second, most consumers today are asking industry experts about air quality. We have come up with a unique concept called air purification system, which is part of our system and also resides in individual air-condition- ers. The air inside the room can be filtered up to PM 1 level. It undergoes five stages of filtration. We can have purified air-conditioned premises and we have the human reduction technology. Because even though we are all working in office spaces, there is individual social distancing. There is a com- mon meeting room where we are supposed to keep a dis- tance of 2-3 meters. It is difficult to scatter the air flow, so we have come up with human reduction technology concept. 46 CONSTRUCTION WEEK JUNE 2021 CONTRACTS A quick look at some of the infrastructure contracts awarded recently THE WINNERS NHAI EMBASSY REIT CENTURY REAL ESTATE APOLLO TYRES MACROTECH DEVELOPERS MAX SPECIALITY FILMS ANUPAM RASAYAN TATA SONS Contract Value: Rs 2.25 tr For FY22, the NHAI has set a highway construction target of 4,600 km.
