< PreviousCRANES 30 CONSTRUCTION WEEK MARCH 2021 Cranes are ubiquitous across the country today what with millions of crore of infrastructure projects in the pipeline Infrastructure and industrial development have played a crucial role in the Indian economy over the past few years. The Indian government is expected to in- crease its spending on public infrastructure to meet its ambitious development plans. Furthermore, the government’s plans, such as 100 smart cities, are expected to boost construction activity and increase demand for construction equipment. These increased investments and the growing construction sector are expected to drive the Indian crane market further in the future. INFRA SAVES THE DAY Any industrial or Infrastructure activity will drive demand for cranes as all the material handling activities are primarily done by them. Man- ish Mathur, CEO, crans, ACE, says, “Despite a devastating second wave we expect the market to grow by at least 25% in FY21- 22. Our Pick-n-Carry cranes are the first equipment to move into an infra site and the last to move out. With the govern- ment determined to initiate infra activity worth Rs 5.5 lakh crore in this fiscal, not only cranes, but the entire construction equipment industry will see a boom.” The National Infrastructure Pipe- line (NIP) is the key demand driver for the CE industry. Road transport, railways, irrigation, water resources, airports are the key projects covered under the NIP program. It is expected that infrastructure spending by the government will continue to remain robust in the coming years, adds Mathur. VG Sakthikumar, MD, Schwing Stetter India, says, “January to March 2021 saw good demand for truck cranes in different segments. We feel demand will continue in April-June 2021 quarter with caution in wake of recent rise in covid-19 cases and its impact on buyers’ risk assessment. With strong line up of projects underway, we hope to sell 50-60 units of 20t to 60t, and 30-35 units of 80t to 100t. We shall continue to expand our presence in small capacity higher volume market.” Infrastructure push by government with increased focus on PPP projects and inflow of FDI in the construction space has been driving demand. The government has outlined several road works, building works and smart city develop- ment projects. All these will require construction and earth- moving equipment. Sanjay Saxena, sr VP & head of heavy equipment business unit, Sany Heavy Industry India, says, “The crane market is experiencing exponential growth due to rapid urbanization and ongoing projects. As per reports, the crane market in India is expected to register a CAGR of over 10% during the forecast period 2020-2025. The gov- ernment’s major infra push in the latest budget also has given an impetus.” There is no doubt that a plethora of infra projects have been awarded recently by the government. But Ghananeel Molankar, divisional head & head of customer service, construction machinery, Liebherr India, advises caution. He says, “It is possible that the second wave might affect the demand and supply equation temporarily. Considering the recent projects and the enquiries that we have been experiencing lately it is evident that there is a strong demand HIGH IN THE SKYCRANES CONSTRUCTION WEEK JUNE 2021 31 DESPITE A DEVASTATING SECOND WAVE WE EXPECT THE MARKET TO GROW BY AT LEAST 25% IN FY21-22. We have also come across demand for tyre mounted cranes including rough terrain and all terrain cranes especially in the above mentioned categories. Most of the enquiries for cranes that we received were for Metro rail and bridge proj- ects. With lot of projects on the anvil we are positive that this will generate further demand for cranes. ENTER SOME NEW ONES Cranes have improved vastly over the years. Mathur says, “Two natural progressions - one you need to increase the capacities of your equipment in terms of maximum reach and weight lifting capacity and the second is to increase the safety of equipment. Besides these, we have improved the efficiency too. ACE’s NX Series NextGen multi activity cranes perform multiple tasks apart from crane operations thereby adding versatility. These type of cranes with articu- lated steering are the first in the world.” There are 3 different types of models which have been in- troduced – NX-360o, NXP & NXT. Adding to this portfolio, 32 CONSTRUCTION WEEK JUNE 2021 CRANES ACE has launched an innovative Multi-Activity Crane FP210 which is capable of doing all support activities at a piling site like cage lowering, concreting and casing removal along with being a 20t 4x4 Pick-n-Carry crane performing the nor- mal crane application of loading, unloading, shifting & erec- tion of material at site. The crane model FP210 is gaining popularity since it can replace 2 machines at site (normal crane + crawler crane) and will be able to perform dual func- tions at the cost of one. ACE sources most of its components from Indian man- ufacturers however, in some bigger capacity equipment it does import from China and Europe. Offering his view on XCMG cranes, Sakthikumar says, “XCMG Cranes feature smallest turning radii in their catego- ries for working in brownfield sites. They have easy outrigger spread mode selection, self-diagnosis tools for engine so as not to required independent scanner, auto mode of opera- tion for boom, and so on. Talking about manoeuvrability, we are the first in India to introduce an all axle steering in truck cranes with latest being a 100ton truck crane with all axles steered feature.” XCMG truck cranes use high strength individual components. Most crane makers are challenging themsleves as projects get more complex. WE FEEL DEMAND WILL CONTINUE IN APRIL-JUNE 2021 QUARTER WITH CAUTION IN WAKE OF RECENT RISE IN COVID-19 CASES. V G SAKTHIKUMARCRANES CONSTRUCTION WEEK JUNE 2021 33 panies have been spending on R&D and upgrading the cranes to the latest technologies as per international stan- dards. Saxena says, “Our cranes are laced with remarkable load-lifting capacity & high stability, which offer superior lifting performance in multiple working environments. The adjustable hydraulic and intelligent electric control system makes the truck cranes highly efficient and low fuel con- sumption equipment. At Sany, the stability, power, and ca- pacity of the cranes have been enhanced over the years to end the user’s requirements.” Focusing on safety, Sany India has added a number of safety features to its cranes like geometric and telematics systems, etc. As the nation is ushering into the new emis- sion norm standards, it has launched four new truck cranes adhering to the new CEV Stage IV norms. Sany has been a strong advocate of “Vocal for Local” since its inception. And since day one localization has been one of the prime focuses of the company. Currently, in the truck crane segment, all the seven models are assembled in India. It has drawn up a phase wise localization plan and developed local vendors for various components and in- THE GOVERNMENT’S MAJOR INFRA PUSH IN THE LATEST BUDGET ALSO HAS GIVEN AN IMPETUS. This is where the ground pressure assistant steps in and hence dangerous accidents can be avoided. On jobsites, the working area under the crawlers can only absorb a lim- ited amount of pressure. This can lead to subsidence if the ground bearing capacity is exceeded, and can consequently lead to the machine tipping. So far, this facility has included almost 9 million square feet of AGRU liner. Problem The mine and surrounding region is in northern Nevada where surface water is scarce, creating a need for sustainable water so- lutions during mining operations. A pond for water storage was built in the late 1980’s out of a flexible material called VLDPE. The used material had excellent elongation and weldability properties but was not equipped with sufficient UV stabiliz- ers, causing it to break down rapidly when exposed to sunlight. The VLDPE liner was removed and replaced with high density polyethylene (HDPE) liner by an unknown producer, but this material also proved to be prone to breakdown, causing leakage through the double liner. The harsh weathering, steep slopes, and overall mining operations overwhelmed the containment system. A design that with a significant drainage solution was needed. Solution In 2017, engineers were brought in to remedy issues with the pond. The group designed a new 625,000 square foot, double- lined pond using AGRU America 60 mil single-sided HDPE MicroSpike liner, with a 200 mil AGRU Geonet as the separa- tor between liners to guarantee quick flow to the leak detection sump. Faster, more exact leak detection enables crews to pin- point and seal leaks.
