This category is exclusive for Construction Week’s social media, where we create a LinkedIn poll to determine the winner for a topic most pertinent to the construction sector as well as stakeholders over the past 12 months. In 2021, the winner was voted based on how well the organisation was championing energy transition while adhering to a strong environmental, social, and governance (ESG) framework ESG metrics are influencing business development and operations all over the world. The business community is being increasingly challenged by regulatory, reporting, and customer demands on the impact of their operations across multiple dimensions, and the construction sector is not exempt from this trend. Globally, the built environment accounts for 30% of total greenhouse gas emissions and 40% of energy consumption, while construction consumes 32% of the world's natural resources. Based on these considerations, it is clear that the construction sector has a role to play in the global initiative to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change. Hence, we nominated four firms for the 2021 People's Choice Award. These included ALDAR; ACCIONA Energia; ENGIE Solutions Middle East; and ACWA Power. Leading the poll with 31% of the votes was ACWA Power, which won the award, followed by ALDAR with 27% vote, ENGIE Solutions with 23%, and ACCIONA Energia with 19%. Hussain Hunbazaza, Commissioner General of KSA Pavilion, Boris Micka, Founder of Micka Associate, and Darren Burke, Senior Contract Manager at ALEC, speak exclusively to Mina Vucic about the design and construction of the pavilion “THE SKY IS THE LIMIT” FOR KSA PAVILION AT EXPO 2020 DUBAI Inspired by the theme “the sky is the limit”, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion offers a glimpse into the shared future, taking its visitors on a journey through the nation’s ambitions across four main pillars: people, nature, heritage, and opportunities. Reflecting on the country’s Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia has developed an outstanding architectural landmark, embodying a bold ambition to shape the world for the better. In line with this, the KSA Pavilion’s design reflects both the country’s past and aspiring future, inviting guests to explore natural landscapes while learning about the rich history that has shaped the country. Eng. Hussain Hunbazaza, Commissioner General of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion, spoke exclusively to Construction Week, accompanied by Boris Micka, Founder, Boris Micka Associates, and Darren Burke, Senior Contract Manager, ALEC. One of the most outstanding characteristic of the structure is the innovative façade of the building, raising five stories high, and transcending an area as much as the size of two football pitches. The base of the prism- like structure represents modern Saudi society with its deep-rooted history; as it soars skywards, it symbolises the Kingdom’s limitless ambitions. Commenting on the pavilion’s spectacular design Eng. Hunbazaza said: “We were working together as one team, and we had one target, to represent the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.” The state-of-the-art building fuses architecture with digital technology and has been awarded LEED version 4 Platinum rating from the US Green Building Council (USGBC) – the highest internationally recognised sustainability rating in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – placing it among the most sustainable designs in the world. Speaking on the LEED certification Burke commented: “LEED is an internationally recognised standard, it is usually done on a 100 points score card and in order to acquire it, 80 plus points need to be recognised. “It is down to water conservation, the energy and the environment considerations, represented by solar panels, as well as waste management and regional materials used for production to reduce the carbon footprint.” Meanwhile, Eng. Hunbazaza added: “Saudi Arabia is very keen on sustainability, as a matter of fact, it is part of our Vision 2030. A month ago, KSA announced the nation will be net-zero by 2060, and the pavilion is a continuation of that strategy.” In addition, the pavilion holds three The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai offers a glimpse into the shared future [Image: ITP Images | Adel Rashid]EXPO EXCLUSIVE JANUARY 2022 CONSTRUCTION WEEK 49WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COM Guinness World Records: the largest interactive lighting floor with around 8,000 LED lights; the longest interactive water feature at 32m; and the largest LED mirror screen display in the world, measuring at 1,302.5m2. Talking about the project, Micka commented: “This was a very challenging project, we knew that the expectations are very high, and we really intended to do something different. “We wanted to show how hospitable the Kingdom is and how open for visitors it has become, therefore creating a space such as the interactive plaza in front of the pavilion.” Upon entering, guests are greeted in the welcome area by a digital fountain. This is followed by the ‘Heritage Path’, which offers a multisensory escalator ride, transporting the rider through some of the country’s most significant historical locations, including UNESCO World Heritage sites. Visitors are later fast-forwarded to the country’s promising future on an escalator surrounded by 2030 crystals – representing Saudi Vision 2030 – revealing the Kingdom’s long-term national transformation plan, completed with world-leading projects which are rewriting the possibilities of sustainable development. Eng. Hunbazaza explained: “The concept revolved around Vision 2030, in an artistic way we wanted this story to be reflected. If you stand in front of the pavilion, it looks like a window that welcomes and invites everyone to come inside, representing a country that is opening up its borders for tourism, partnership, and investments.” The highlight of the exhibition is the ‘Vision’ space: a floating virtual sphere almost 30m in diameter. This colossal art installation was brought to life by a collective of Saudi artists. In the ‘Business Park’, an innovative platform connects leaders from around the world to forge exciting partnerships and discuss investment opportunities. Economy and investment, arts and culture, nature, energy, and much more can be explored in the ‘Discovery Center’. KSA welcomes everyone to it’s nation” On a concluding note he said: “All visitors will see Saudi Arabia as it really is: an exciting fusion of old and new - an ancient and evolving tourist destination for adventurers, explorers, and luxury travelers and a destination unlike any other. “Our pavilion is a bridge that will connect the people of Saudi Arabia to the world and will help deepen regional and global ties.” Next >
