From the intricate patterns and traditions of ancient architecture to the natural beauty of the Arabian landscapes, Saudi Arabia’s design philosophy is deeply connected to its past. Originally a diplomat-focused area, it is now evolving into a vibrant, pedestrian-centric district that integrates upscale residential spaces with cultural and recreational opportunities. This development mirrors global urban innovations like Msheireb Downtown Doha and Ras Al Khaimah Central in the UAE - projects where Gensler’s infl uence is evident in shaping future-ready cities. These developments embrace the concept of the “20-minute city,” where residents can access essential services, workplaces, and amenities within a short walk or bike ride, fostering a higher quality of life and reducing dependence on cars. The Kingdom has committed to renewable energy, low-carbon strategies, and resilient urban planning to mitigate environmental impact and secure long-term sustainability. At Gensler, we have developed tools such as the Gensler Product Sustainability (GPS) Standard, which help us select low- or no-carbon materials for interiors and furnishings, significantly reducing environmental impact. Furthermore, advancements in construction technologies like zero-carbon cement and sustainable building systems are aligned with Saudi Arabia’s goals of creating energy-effi cient, resilient buildings. The commitment to sustainability also extends to adaptive reuse, where existing structures are repurposed to reduce waste and conserve resources. In a rapidly evolving urban landscape, adaptive reuse strategies can transform aging buildings into vital assets, ensuring that Saudi Arabia’s future cities remain sustainable, resilient, and capable of 42 commercialinteriordesign.comFebruary 2025Project: African Queen How Humbert & Poyet blended African heritage with Dubai luxury for the J1 venue AFRICAN Queen43 commercialinteriordesign.comFebruary 2025Project: African Queen44 commercialinteriordesign.comFebruary 2025Project: African Queen “We collaborated with artisans who prioritise sustainable practices” N estled along the pristine shores of J1 Beach, African Queen is a celebration of cultural richness and modern luxury, brought to life by renowned architects Humbert & Poyet. Tasked with reimagining a legacy while embracing Dubai’s cosmopolitan energy, the duo has created a space that marries the soul of African heritage with the glamour of a contemporary beach club. From the natural materials that evoke the warmth of the African landscape to the seamless indoor-outdoor design that captures the ebb and fl ow of the ocean, every detail of African Queen tells a story. It’s a bold yet intimate venue that redefi nes beachside luxury while offering guests an unforgettable sensory experience. The designers take CID through the journey and the creative process that brought African Queen to life. Celebrating culture and craftsmanship The vision for African Queen at J1 Beach was clear from the outset: to honour the legacy of African Queen while capturing Dubai’s cosmopolitan energy and vibrant beach culture. “We wanted to create a space that blends African heritage with modern elegance,” the fi rm said. “It’s a luxurious yet soulful retreat by the sea.” This vision came to life through carefully chosen materials and thoughtful design. From warm, natural textures to custom furnishings inspired by African art, every element refl ects the richness of African culture. The seamless indoor-outdoor transitions and open, breezy layout further enhance the connection to J1 Beach’s stunning surroundings. Inspired by the Ocean The beachfront location heavily infl uenced the design. “The proximity to the beach was integral to our concept,” the fi rm explained. “We incorporated elements that mimic the ebb and fl ow of the ocean, like fl owing fabrics, wave-like patterns, and an open layout.” These details, combined with sandy tones and abundant natural light, create a tranquil yet immersive experience for guests to enjoy. The space is bold and luxurious while remaining inviting and authentic. “We focused on authenticity by sourcing textures, patterns, and materials that refl ect African artistry, tribal motifs, woven accents, and earthy tones,” said the duo. 45 commercialinteriordesign.comFebruary 2025Project: African Queen46 commercialinteriordesign.comFebruary 2025Project: African Queen They paired these elements with sleek, modern fi nishes to appeal to Dubai’s global audience and multi-cultural society. Luxury was balanced with warmth through a combination of materials. “We used marble and velvet for opulence but softened the space with handcrafted elements and organic forms,” they added. “Plush seating, soft lighting, and thoughtful zoning ensure guests feel both inspired and at ease.” Breaking the mould The architects took a creative approach to the traditional beach club layout. “Instead of a typical open-plan space, we designed distinct zones with varying moods— intimate dining areas, relaxed lounges, and lively bar spaces,” they shared. This zoning caters to diverse guest preferences while maintaining aesthetic harmony. A standout feature is the pool, described by the architects as “tiled in opus insertum green marble and surrounded by dreamy olive trees.” It serves as more than just a swimming area but is rather a refl ective centerpiece that connects the space to the natural beauty of its surroundings. Sustainability also played a key role in the project. The use of reclaimed wood, eco-friendly fabrics, and energy-effi cient lighting highlights the team’s commitment to environmentally responsible design. “We collaborated with artisans who prioritise sustainable practices,” they noted, ensuring that luxury does not come at the expense of the planet. Lessons learned “We hope guests leave feeling inspired and connected to African heritage,” the architects said. “It’s about creating a space that values storytelling and craftsmanship.” Refl ecting on the project, Humbert & Poyet emphasised the importance of adaptability and collaboration. “Designing for a culturally diverse audience while staying true to African Queen’s essence pushed us to think creatively,” they said. This experience reinforced their belief in storytelling through design and the emotional resonance of a well-crafted space. “True luxury lies in the seamless integration of beauty, comfort, and meaning,” they concluded. “It’s about creating a space that tells a story, evokes emotion, and leaves a lasting impression.” •47 commercialinteriordesign.comFebruary 2025Project: African Queen48 commercialinteriordesign.comFebruary 2025Project: Steak on Me Butchers blocks, steel tables and strobe lighting are conceptualised in this Japanese-inspired steakhouse from H2R Design TOKYO NIGHTS49 commercialinteriordesign.comFebruary 2025Project: Steak on MeNext >
