The once green hills were charred, and grey smoke billowed as the bomberos tried to put out the fl ames. Witnessing this devastation can be life changing, and it was for the designer whose latest collection of sculptural cork furniture – his second for Lisbon atelier Made in Situ – pays homage to the resilience of the Portuguese people and landscape. “The idea of the phoenix rising from the ashes helped to envision the pieces,” says Duchaufour-Lawrance of the objects created from discarded burnt cork. “This collection for me was an opportunity to transform the remnants of the fi res, creating our own material as a rebirth.” Found in abundance in Portugal, cork’s eco credentials are impressive. Cork oak trees have the unique ability to regenerate their outer bark and can absorb three to fi ve times more CO2 than a non-harvested tree, making it extremely sustainable. “It is one of the only materials in the world where human interaction with the tree actually has a positive impact on the planet,” says the designer. “Cork oak trees in Portugal alone help off set 10 million tons of carbon every year. It’s such an exceptional material.” Working with cork to create the sculptural silhouettes that defi ne the collection was both exciting and challenging. In October 2018, Duchaufour-Lawrance and the Made in Situ team started the journey of exploration, meeting with artisans from Alentejo and Algarve. In Faro, they came across a small family-owned production facility, NF Cork. “It was fascinating for me to learn about harvesting and working with this super-ma- terial,” he says of the research phase. “Our aim was to create a visible gradient on a cork block, mixing diff erent sizes of granules and integrating burnt bark pieces.” The blocks take between 6 and 8 weeks to dry and stabilise and need to be compact enough to be shaped by a machine and sculpted into furniture. “The tension between tradition and high-tech called for the invention of new tools and production methods,” adds Duchaufour-Lawrance. “We’re pushing boundaries.” madeinsitu.com – P.S. - DESIGN - Witnessing the devastation caused by forest fires inspired a new eco furniture collection From the Ashes Burnt Cork chairs. Crafted in sleek black ceramics with pink gold accents, the mechanical women’s watch combines advanced technology (think high-precision machining and temperatures of over 1400°C to achieve the fi nish) with the time- honoured craftsmanship that the Swiss Haute Horlogerie house is known for. The understated result is eff ortlessly versatile. audemarspiguet.com – T.C. With the Aston Martin Valkyrie, its hybrid 1,000 hp car, now starring in all the major racing events thanks to drivers Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll, it was time for the automotive label to off er a real road car inspired by single-seaters, just like Ferrari has done since the time of its legendary Scuderia. And so, at this year’s Silverstone Grand Prix, the iconic British brand lifted the veil on a ‘civilised’ version of the race car. The new Valhalla is still every bit a hypercar, but one that ticks the box for everyday roads. This car is an engineering marvel; it features twin-turbo 4.0L V8 engines and is powered by an electric motor – together delivering a racer boy worthy 950 hp. Plus, it comes kitted with a rechargeable battery that allows up to 15 km of driving in Zero Emission mode. And while it is a one-of-a-kind city car, the spirit of the race is not far off : its wheels feature a single central nut bolting system and gigantic carbon brake discs that can stop this 1,550 kg machine with precision and grace. The only questions that remain are Valhalla’s price tag, its production run (the cars will be built in small batches) and delivery time; but when you love an Aston Martin you don't count. You just make your way to the nearest dealer, cheque book in hand. astonmartin.com – ALEXANDRE LAZERGES - MOTOR ING - Aston Martin unveils the Valhalla, its 950 hp hybrid hypercar Wheels of Fortune FROM TOP: From the side, the Valhalla looks like a sculpture on wheels; a detail of the aerodynamic bodywork; the eye-catching rear. As well as being head designer of leather goods at Fendi, De Vincenzo has an eponymous womenswear label, and his love of lurex fabrics has been translated into four sparkly striped rugs. Instead of the Tibetan hand-knotting used by cc-tapis for its signature collections, an Indian handloom technique was chosen to allow for large production runs, a lower price point and swift delivery. De Vincenzo describes the glittering result as a ‘rainbow of frosted colours’ – blue sky thinking brought down to earth. cc-tapis.com – T.C.
