But that was then. Now, we’ve all woken up to the urgent need to change the way we produce and consume. So in this, our annual Style Issue, we thought we’d off er some inspirational stories about the way in which people are taking steps (big and small) to live and create more sustainably. It’s in no way an exhaustive portfolio and we don’t purport to have found perfect solutions; rather, it’s an acknowledgement that we must shift our thinking while still championing beautiful design and bringing you the best of the best. Several of the homes featured in this issue have seriously impressive eco credentials, including the weekend retreat that architect Xavier Huyberechts has built with his brother on an ancient geological site in South Africa (p.50). Shown above, the house disappears into the landscape thanks to a green roof that runs seamlessly from the hillside and over the house, like a blanket of earth. Made almost entirely from earth and stone, the structure will be reabsorbed into the ground at the end of its life. There are myriad other stories to inspire: In Morocco, Beldi Rugs is evolving traditional rug craft with vibrant designs that help to improve the lives of the women that make them (p.30); in Sydney, the husband-and- wife team behind architecture fi rm Alexander & Co has created an eco-chic live ⁄ work space to refl ect our shifting priorities as we emerge from the pandemic (p.100); and in Dubai, Sotheby’s is set to stage an exhibition showcasing jewellers who are designing and producing exquisite pieces in the UAE (p.38). It’s a sign of an emerging local luxury market that appeals to discerning clients who want to understand the value and impact of their purchasing decisions – buying less, but buying better.
