< Previous60 APRIL 2025 TIMEOUTDUBAI.COM Food La Cantine Beach A new Bluewaters beach club with a sporty edge (and seriously good food) If you’re looking to pivot away from pounding beach club beats for something a little calmer, think of La Cantine Beach as your new oasis away from home. This sprawling beach club is a waterfront extension of French favourite La Cantine du Faubourg, an Emirates Towers institution loved by many a foodie. But this hot spot is so much more than your standard Dubai beach day or pool club. Here you’ll find a lush blend of relaxation, wellness and Mediterranean dining, all with the offerings of a swanky sports club – it’s a harmonious package that oozes the luxe Dubai aesthetic we all know and love. Thoughtfully laid out between Banyan Tree Dubai and the recently opened Delano Dubai hotel on Bluewaters Island, this beach club brings the wow-factor. Think baby blue sunloungers that surround not one but two pools – a generously sized family pool and an adults-only one a few metres away – as well as a glorious beach. Upon arrival you’ll clock a bright blue pickleball court, acting as a sporty segue to your dreamy day out. Sports not your thing? Fret not. There’s plenty for you, too. But first, help yourself to a bag of pick ’n’ mix from the tuck shop-style retro car at the entrance. It would be rude not to after all. For beach-goers, settle in on a plush lounger before eyeing up the menu. While non-redeemable access starts at Dhs200 on weekdays and Dhs250 at the weekend, it’s arguably great value for money considering some of the steeper prices nearby. Time Out reviews anonymously and pays for its meals Whether you choose to plop yourself down on the beach, poolside or restaurant, you will definitely be feeling more relaxed by the time you leave and that’s not all down to the mellow notes (sometimes live) entertainment wafting through the air either. Whether your idea of self-care is soaking up the sun on a lounger with a good book or getting your namaste on, you’ll find all that and more here. The venue offers a variety of wellness classes you can book in advance (we’re eyeing up the hatha yoga tbh). The on-trend pickleball court can be all yours too, with bookings available online. In the restaurant, diners will feel like they’re perched at a table on La Croisette, TIMEOUTDUBAI.COM APRIL 2025 61 Three to try New seaside spots Bâoli Bâoli is a pretty stunning destination that offers up modern Japanese cuisine with new Asian flavours. With outposts in Miami, Cannes and now Dubai, the jungle- themed restaurant is a beach club by day and a very lively night out after sunset. O Open Sun-Wed 10am-1am, Thu-Sat 10am-3am. J1 Beach, Jumeirah 1, baoli- restaurant.com (04 558 6381). Casa Amor Known as one of the most exclusive beach clubs in the French Riviera, this vibey restaurant offers toe-tapping beats, a cool beach experience and a menu that blends the flavours of South of France with subtle Latin influences, perfectly designed for sharing. The ambience echoes Tulum, while in one of the chicest hotels in town. Plus, you also have a world-class bar offering premium drinks and signature creations crafted by expert mixologists. O Open daily 9am-11pm. Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai, Jumeirah 3, @casaamordubai (04 834 8278). Gigi Rigolatto Gigi is all about elegant Italian culture and with an upbeat atmosphere, it appeals to both foodies and party enthusiasts. Inspired by its iconic locations in Paris and Saint-Tropez, Gigi features a menu of classic Italian cuisine – think burrata, vitello tonnato, truffle pizzas, spaghettoni cacio e pepe and more. Families are welcome too, while a concept store offers more than 40 international brands of beachwear and accessories. O Open daily from 10am-1am. J1 Beach, La Mer, Jumeirah, gigi-restaurant.com/dubai (04 558 2067). “A lush blend of relaxation, wellness and Mediterranean dining” without the pomp (the people-watching is still good). Interiors are awash with a neutral colour palette, while waiters continue the sporty theme with tennis whites as uniform. Regulars of Jumeirah Emirates Towers’ La Cantine will be happy to see its signature dishes also available in this seaside location, such as the delightfully fresh yellowfin tuna ceviche and gloriously sticky and moreish beef short rib for starters, both generously sized as main dishes too. Those keeping up with a healthy streak are also catered for thanks to its hearty ‘sur les grill’ offering and, of course, salad choices, which are dressed up and meaty. The whole baby chicken makes a great sharing option, while the seared sea bass fillet is ideal for those after a taste of the sea while eyeing up the pink grape list. Caviar is also on offer, but it’s the seafood platter that makes the rounds, especially after a day on the beach. Staff will float the idea of dessert – and even if you only squeeze in the pineapple carpaccio over the exotic pavlova, it’s well worth ordering. Whether you make La Cantine Beach your new go-to club or are in need of somewhere new to dine al fresco, its attentive all-round service will please even the fussiest of foodies. Besides, how can you not love a lit up Ain Dubai backdrop at dinner? O Dhs200 (Mon-Fri, non redeemable), Dhs250 (Sat- Sun). Open daily 10am-midnight. Bluewaters Island, lacantinebeach.ae (04 556 6622).62 APRIL 2025 TIMEOUTDUBAI.COM Meat the Fish A waterfront venue with stunning views and a fresh menu at one of the hottest new spots The Marsa Al Arab Marina is having a moment. Located adjacent to the new giant resort by Jumeirah Group, chances are you’ve seen this pretty foodie destination on your socials. And its Beirut-born Mediterranean dining destination, Meat the Fish, is one of the five restaurants located at the Marina overlooking the Arabian Gulf. Those familiar with the dining scene in London may recognise the name as its Chelsea counteract is a popular, more dressed up date night spot. Although the Dubai location isn’t as lavish, that’s okay, because the humble- sized eatery is open to anyone from passers-by to Kite Beach dwellers. You’re fine to rock up in your gym gear or stilettos. One glance at the menu and you’ll soon realise why it’s already a foodie hit since opening in December 2024. Food is fresh and we mean, fresh. Besides, with a prime beachside location, one would hope so. A portion of the menu changes daily and is sprinkled with ‘catch of the day’ offerings, from sashimi to tartare, with choices toggling between ruby red salmon, sea bass and tuna. Paired with a bowl of smashed potatoes, smothered with rosemary and sea salt, plus a bok choy broccoli bowl, you’ve got a dreamy combo. Starters are fun, with a black bao thrown into the mix packed with crispy king prawns, living up to its MediterrAsian reputation. Diners shouldn’t snub the salad section, as the market salad makes a zesty pairing with whatever main course takes your fancy. The beef bulgogi is tender and tangy (only available on Tuesdays) while the lobster taco (only available on Thursdays) has a paprika kick. It’s not often a casual dining place takes both fish and meat seriously. But since we’re meating the fish (ahem), well it makes sense for them to. Stop by around breakfast time and you’ll be treated to a ‘brainstorm’ smoothie (berry galore) or a labneh bowl to kick-start the day, but try to book ahead of time. It’s safe to say more Dubai food fans are catching on to the hype – and quite rightly. O Open daily 8am-midnight. Licensed. Marsa Al Arab Marina, Umm Suqeim, meatthefish.com (058 930 4640). Food TIMEOUTDUBAI.COM APRIL 2025 63 The Spaniel Classic British food with a Dubai edge in a prime spot on Bluewaters Dubai There’s always something comforting about pulling up a chair inside a British brasserie. A roaring fire, leather-bound seating and smiley staff, not to mention home-cooked grub so good a Brit (and anyone else) would come back again (and again). The Spaniel in Bluewaters brings all that to the table, the Dubai way. Despite the lack of a fireplace crackling in the corner, the ornate, glass-covered bar upgrades this traditional English hangout. After all, with Ain Dubai turning in close proximity, this is quintessentially British dining with a twist. It’s not only the vibe that has people talking, but the menu too. The tiger prawn scampi starter is moreish with a piquant, fresh tartare sauce, while Welsh rarebit is a true crowd pleaser thanks to its tangy (and authentic) Worcestershire sauce hit. The Scotch egg with a walnut ketchup is a dressy version of the bar snack favourite, but lacks the moist meaty filling you know and love. Although the eggy yolk packs a peppery punch. Pencil in to visit on a Wednesday when you can try all three and a beef wellington main with a bottle of red grape for under Dhs500. When it comes to mains, it’s comfort food aplenty. The fish and chips is a repeat order come the weekend, and it’s no surprise why. The spuds have been transformed into proper chips with a snappy fish batter to boot – no soggy bases here. Meanwhile another Brit fave, shepherd’s pie, comes steaming hot with a mashed potato top baked perfectly crisp with Parmesan – a popular order even if it’s edging on 40 degrees outside. Desserts definitely don’t go unnoticed either. Sticky toffee pudding’s gooey distinct sweetness has not been messed with, instead topped with an oaty Horlicks ice cream that takes it to the next level. The apple crumble may just remind you of a Sunday sit-down with the family. Speaking of Sunday sit-downs, The Spaniel’s Sunday roast is one to bookmark and a top way to try the British cooking. Don’t miss the ten-hour slow-cooked lamb shank with homemade mint sauce. This two-floor eatery has become a go-to for expats searching for a taste of home and it’s easy to see why. Book a table upstairs, where the vibes are cosier and hunker down with some classics done right. O Open Mon-Thu noon-midnight, Fri noon-1am, Sat 9.30am-1am, Sun 9.30am-midnight. Licensed. Bluewaters Dubai, thespanieldxb.com (04 55 43 728). “Welsh rarebit is a true crowd pleaser”Food 64 APRIL 2025 TIMEOUTDUBAI.COM Lazy Cat A viral café with substance, style and excellent coffee to elevate your socials When a brand receives cult status in the GCC, chances are it’s good, really good. More venues, more collaborations and (hopefully) more delicious plates added to the menu. What’s not to like? One of the most recent success stories is that of Lazy Cat – one of the region’s most beloved brands and a favourite for foodies in Kuwait. Having ventured to Dubai late last year, this out-of-the-way cosy nook in Al Quoz Pond Park has all the traits you would hope for from a café in this city – great coffee and Instagrammable dishes. But these positives (and hype) also mean diners can expect a three-hour wait (minimum) at the weekends with 30 minutes in line on weekdays. Whether you have the time and inclination is up to you. But what awaits really is a treat. Lazy Cat’s blue colouring is a strong motif throughout, with cat sculptures dotted around the place, blue matcha and a merch cart on show as you arrive. Sit outside and you’ll be treated to a Burj Khalifa view, surrounded by the lush greenery. Breakfast is taken seriously here, with arguably some of the fluffiest pancakes in town – a sweet batter instantly dissolves with each mouthful, nailing authentic Japanese style. Choose yours topped with matcha or crème brûlée sauce. The coffee has a sweet undertone but not in a sickly, toffee way. If you’re in the mood to experiment, the eye-catching blue matcha has been making the rounds on social for all the right reasons — it’s creamy and earthy. Eggs are done well (or soft, or medium) and an avocado side isn’t stingy. Meanwhile pastries are a buttery treat. If your grid could do with some extra street cred, head to Lazy Cat for a cup of coffee and bucket load of likes (if you can hack the wait, that is). O Open Mon-Thu 7am-10pm, Fri-Sun 7am-11pm. Unlicensed. Al Quoz Pond Park, Al Quoz, @eatlazycat (04 345 2542). Despite competition in guises ranging from the endless cellar offering at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal to the giant Louis Vuitton inflatables decorating the driveway, the most evident display of ostentation is here at Cloud 22. Iconic Dolce & Gabbana prints, swish private chalets, a city-beating swim-up bar – expect to spend the first hour just taking it all in. That’s before you’ve even got to the view, the whole Palm Jumeirah spread out at your feet, the Marina and Ain Dubai on the horizon. Crucially, there’s actually room to see and experience it all. Guests aren’t piled up like spices in a souk – sunbeds are well spaced and there’s almost more pool than anything else. For the people-watchers, the crowd is equally mesmerising. Given the day rate for some of Cloud 22’s most prime beds, of course it is. Service, from start to finish, is both efficient and polished. And despite most of the prices, Atlantis The Royal does, savvily, sell the best-value bottle of a popular pink grape variety in town. And it goes down a treat while you’re waist-deep, looking out over those cascading infinity pool edges. Cloud 22 might not be the pool club you can afford to do every weekend, but they’ll be prising your cold, pruned fingers from the swim-up bar by the time the sun sets on a day here. O Day passes from Dhs495 (Mon-Fri), Dhs695 (Sat-Sun). Open daily 10am-8pm. Sometimes the occasion calls for something a bit more extra. Enter Soirée. Yes, you’ve read the term in every French classic book, meaning a fancy evening affair (it’s giving exclusive). Elegant guests mingle as they chat about art, music and literature. It’s stylish and sociable. And now you get to live it. Found in Business Bay, inside The Opus by Omniyat, the grape bar Soirée certainly lives up to its name, but with a Dubai twist. The UAE version encourages guests to ‘forget the word fancy’ at the door, whichever day of the week you happen to be there. Brought to the city by the team behind SFUMATO (also inside The Opus), the grape bar is brimming with diners and happy hourgoers, night after night. The funky-looking hot spot has coloured doodles as artwork all over the walls, paired with a couple of velvet cocooned booths to natter with a friend. This place starts to tick the boxes of a good night out pretty quickly. And for grape fans, that’s only the beginning. The grape list is impressive, filled with bottles from small producers of biodynamic, natural, fermented and ecologically friendly reds, whites and pinks. Soirée has more than 50 options to order by glass, all on show in trophy-like cabinets for your choosing. But don’t worry, there are still more familiar names to swirl and sniff if you’re unsure. And if you prefer a mixed drink, you can order those too, as the cool bar offers a range of mixes with several featuring, you guessed it, grape (its peanut mixed drink with a grape base makes a savoury choice). What’s more, if you’re looking for somewhere to linger longer post the 7pm mark, Soirée’s ladies’ night is generous (a tad more so than all its neighbours). You’ll get three free glasses of grape or mixed drinks until 11pm, plus 50 percent off your food bill too (including small plates and mains of fish and meat). Throw in a live DJ performance and you’ve got yourself a cracking Thursday night. While on Wednesdays, you can head on over for grape and cheese, where Soirée’s sommeliers will show off their expertise in pairings. Come Friday, it’s all about the music, with handpicked vocal talent invited to accompany your end-of-week tipple. If you’re not savvy with reading a grape list, you may feel service is slightly under par with recommendations during peak ordering hours, as seats quickly fill up. But with its convenient location, generous ladies’ night and tasty dining options, an evening at Soirée’s makes a reliable date in the diary, especially for grape connoisseurs. O Open Mon-Thu 5pm-1am, Fri-Sat 5pm-2am, Sun 5pm-1am. The Opus by Omniyat, Business Bay, soireedxb.com (055 413 6648). “It’s brimming with happy hourgoers”Next >
