< PreviousFood 40 September 30 – October 13 2020 timeoutdubai.com WITH NEW RESTAURANTS popping up around the city, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to going out for a meal at the moment. And after months of staying in, it’s all much more of a treat. Business Bay is now the home of two new big hitters. ROKA and The MAINE Land Brasserie – both of which are housed in The Opus from the late Zaha Hadid. We’re big fans of The MAINE. It’s picked up several gongs at the Time Out Dubai Restaurant Awards in the past thanks to its cool vibe and top-notch food. And The MAINE Land Brasserie is the newest outpost in the city – with the other two in JBR and Dubai Studio City – and it’s undoubtedly the fanciest. The swish new brasserie has a similar menu to its siblings, with favourite dishes still starring on the menu. We’re a sucker for the spicy shrimp linguine, which is just as tasty as ever at this new venue, with a rich, tomatoey sauce and a warming kick from the chilli. For a healthy dish, the sea bass with broccolini is deliciously light. Don’t miss the fish tacos either, which are super-tasty and housed in a soft taco, while another top starter choice is the octopus, plump and delicious in a tangy caper sauce. If you’re more of a meat eater there’s a robust selection of steaks and grills on the menu too. When it comes to desserts a sticky toffee pudding is gloriously gooey while crème brûlée is silky soft with a perfectly caramelised topping. The MAINE Land Brasserie O Open daily noon-midnight. For the cool vibe and dishes you know and love The restaurant itself is super-chic and glamorous, with wood panels, massive crystal chandeliers and deep, comfy banquettes. The long bar, which is currently not in use, lends an elegant touch, and even the bathrooms are suitably upmarket, being hidden behind an unmarked door and boasting fancy soaps and lotions. Service is excellent, the team knows what’s what, and the dining room has a buzzing vibe. The restaurant also has a business lunch deal, being three courses for Dhs130, which is an excellent way to check it out at a top price too. With The MAINE’s signature dishes as tasty as ever, a slick look and a cool vibe, there’s a lot to like about this new spot. Fancy Chinese restaurant in DIFC WHY GO... Classic dishes, done expertly ROYAL CHINA IS a stalwart of Dubai’s Chinese food scene that’s popular for its consistently good eats and its elegant take on authentic Chinese dishes. Royal by name, royal by décor – with dark woods, ambient lighting, rich golden hues and red tasselled chandeliers reminiscent of Chinese lanterns, the restaurant is atmospheric and upmarket. Housed in the uber-cool financial district, it’s the perfect spot for a semi-luxurious business lunch but on the other hand it’s also an impressive spot for a romantic date night. The menu is well-versed with a fantastic array of Cantonese and regional Chinese dishes, plenty on offer for vegetarians and a dedicated dim sum menu, which is a specialty at Royal China. The crispy aromatic duck comes served with all the traditional accompaniments and it’s one of the best versions we’ve had in the city. From the duck that’s crisped to perfection and shredded table-side to the tangy plum sauce, it’s a real winner. From the sautéed broccoli with fresh ginger to super-tasty noodles, everything we sample hits the spot with authenticity shining through. It may be pricier than some Chinese eateries in the city, but given its swish location and the excellent quality of food, it justifies the price tag. And that’s why it remains top choice for a delicious meal, and why we keep returning. Royal China O Open daily 11.30am-midnight. Licensed. Building 4, DIFC (04 354 5543). Jumeirah Fishing Harbour, Umm Suqeim (055 705 2130). REMEMBER BEING A kid and being told, don’t judge a book by its cover? We’re entirely sure that the age old saying was created just for places like Bu Qtair. From humble beginnings as a tiny seafood shack, the now bona fide Dubai institution has since expanded and can be found in a much larger space in Jumeirah Fishing Harbour. Head here with an open mind, an appetite and make sure to leave any pretentiousness at the door. There’s no bells and whistles here – and no menu either. Take your pick between whatever’s been caught fresh from the sea that day and prawns, priced by weight. We opt for the sheri and a portion of prawns which both come perfectly fried and pre- seasoned in fresh spices that pack a punch, along with rice, an aromatic curry gravy and moreishly buttery parathas. It’s worth noting that it’s a cash only spot so make sure you visit with a pocket full of cash and get ready for your dirhams to take you far. Our bill comes to just under Dhs110 and we leave feeling satisfyingly full and all without a burning a hole in our pocket. For tourists and residents alike, Bu Qtair is a must-visit for casual dining and super-fresh seafood on a shoestring. Go now and thank us later. WHAT IS IT... Brillant budget spot in Umm Suqeim WHY GO... Super-fresh seafood IT MAY FEEL strange to find a slice of Jamaica in a skyscraper just off Sheikh Zayed Road, but that’s how Dubai surprises us. If there was ever a place in the city that gives us a taste of what the night scene in Jamaica is all about, this lively spot shows it. Not just in the way it looks, sounds (thanks to thumping reggae tunes) and feels with its party vibes, but through its authentic dishes. The island’s most famous dishes are all present, no less, with everything from its famous jerk chicken (which is a no-brainer to order) and staple Jamaican sides to its more Miss Lily’s O Open Sat-Tue 7pm-1am, Wed-Fri 7pm-3am. By that, we mean its stews. A mix of beautiful tender meats put together with either fluffy potatoes or rice, these home-style dishes are not to be missed. There’s also a lively Friday brunch, and a pumping nightlife scene – this is a place that picks up later in the evening, so get ready for a fun late-night dinner. 42 - 43_EO REVIEW 3 & 4_11370543.indd 4228/09/2020 12:07:57Food timeoutdubai.com September 30 – October 13 2020 43 NEW OPENINGS SKYLINE VIEWS Mercury Lounge reopens The elegant rooftop bar at the Four Seasons Dubai at Jumeirah Beach has officially relaunched – with an all-new theme, a taste of Monaco and a top ladies’ night. You forget which wristbands you’ve worn, how many slices of pizza / chicken wings /plates of hummus you ate and so on. But some brunches really stand out – and that’s where Secret Brunch at Palazzo Versace shines. From the get-go, this brunch is over-the-top luxury, a level of extra we perhaps have grown used to in this city but rarely encounter back at home. The décor can only be described as palatial chic – and of course your handbag gets its own seat at the table. Run by Secret Parties, you know to expect a lively afternoon. Not satisfied with an average house DJ, there’s a violinist and an opera singer to keep us entertained. We’re given tiny opera glasses, although we don’t see why we need them as the singer serenades basically everyone over the course of the afternoon. But what else would you expect from Versace? Service is impeccable, and we’re quickly tucking into the first course – cheese, cheese, and more cheese. Our group is stunned into silence as we (respectfully) fight each other over the incredible breads. We have a quick pit stop in between inhaling carbs to try some of the The Secret Palazzo Versace Brunch O Dhs345 (soft drinks), Dhs445 (house beverages), Dhs545 (sparkling), Dhs699 (bubbly). By the time we’re tucking into steaming balls of arancini and creamy burrata it’s clear that food isn’t an afterthought at this party brunch. Drinks flow freely and while the brunch isn’t rammed with people, everyone is having a good time (in a socially distanced way). The violinist is having fun interpreting modern pop classics too. As mains arrive we’re so busy having fun we’ve (almost) forgotten about them. But they’re just as delicious as the starters. The pasta is freshly made, while the fish and veggie dishes that arrive are tasty too. WHAT IS IT... A super-party brunch in a fancy location WHY GO... Top entertainment, fresh pasta and plenty of ice cream “Food isn’t an afterthought at this party brunch” THE PARTY BRUNCH Dessert takes a strange turn. After finishing off some incredible cannoli, the opera singer starts performing O sole mio - except it isn’t O sole mio at all, he’s singing about Cornettos (you remember the ’80s TV advert) as trolleys of the ice cream treat arrive. It’s hysterical, and we may have burned off at least some of the calories we just consumed. Sooner than we’d like, our time at Vanitas is over. We leave feeling thoroughly full and thoroughly entertained. This is definitely a brunch to head to if you want to impress someone and show off some of the best Dubai has to offer. 45_BRUNCH REVIEW_11370535.indd 4528/09/2020 16:12:11Food 46 September 30 – October 13 2020 timeoutdubai.com ASIAN 3 Fils This cool Asian seafood spot at Jumeirah Fishing Harbour launched with a bang in 2017 and has only got better.
