Here’s our pick of some of the finest documentaries out there. Forget Netflix and the rest – these are all available to watch for free. Enjoy. LDN (Nathan Miller, 2017) The definitive document of London’s modern grime-drill-hip-hop explosion, which blesses this oft-misunderstood scene with the excitement and fervour it deserves. Featuring J Hus, Kojey Radical, 67, Fredo and more, LDN was made by documentary filmmaker Nathan Miller, who was working part-time at London’s Ace Hotel at the time. The Burger and the King (BBC, 1995) Elvis had a truly fascinating, slightly messed- up, relationship with food, which is told through this riveting documentary. Only a man who used food as a proxy for love could stuff quite that many deep-fried peanut-butter sandwiches into himself in one lifetime. Chas & Dave: Last Orders (BBC, 2012) Lovable rogues Chas and Dave invented ‘rockney’, a vaudeville blend of cockney pub rock, music hall and old-school bops. Last Orders reflects on five decades of the duo, arguing that there was some real good music behind the laughs. The Story of Funk: One Nation Under a Groove (BBC, 2014) “Funk. Funk is a sensation. A universal feeling from another dimension” is how this exploration of the world’s embrace of funkiness kicks off. With archive footage of the likes of James Brown and Sly & The Family Stone, plus the usual BBC talking heads, it’s a toe-tapping treat. Everybody in the Place: An Incomplete History of Britain 1984-1992 (BBC, 2018) Granted, not the breeziest title, but a real breath of fresh air. Switching out the usual to techno, this rave-whistlestop tour takes in the whole history of Belgium’s dance music scene. I Was There When House Took Over The World (Channel 4, 2017) Miniature two-parter on the birth of house music. Grooving through the beginnings of the scene in Chicago, there are lots of heavyweights lending their wisdom along the way such as Nile Rodgers, Marshall Jefferson and Honey Dijon. Marc Bolan: The Final Word (BBC, 2007) T. Rex were brimming with slick licks and big riffs. Suzi Quatro narrates this BBC-produced story of Marc Bolan’s life from childhood to fame and tragedy. A kaleidoscopic snapshot of the ultimate ’70s muse. Fantastic Man: A Film About William Onyeabor (Alldayeveryday, 2014) Travelling to Nigeria and chatting to Damon Albarn, Caribou and Femi Kuti, Jake Sumner floating heads, Turner Prize-winner Jeremy Deller takes it to the classroom, telling the history of mid-1980s house to a room of students, lecture-style. Reach for the laser- mouse and have a watch. The South Bank Show: Talking Heads (LWT, 1979) For anyone that likes their music played in lofts, there’s this fantastic document of a tremendously shy David Byrne et al, around the time of Fear of Music. Classic Albums: Screamadelica (BBC, 2011) A sheer joy. Classic Albums: Screamadelica is packed with mixing-desk magic and the band gleefully hashing it out to remember the album’s hazy conception. It features beautiful, poignant words from the late Andrew Weatherall throughout. Soulwax: Part of the Weekend Never Dies (Partizan, 2008) One-hundred-and-twenty shows, one handheld camera, and thousands of faces. This brilliant documentary is a head-first trip into Soulwax’s touring schedule, and all the excess that comes with it. An ace time to relive the new- rave explosion. The UAE-based life coach offers five tops tips on ways to keep happy and stay motivated while working from home in the UAE. 1Create a balanced schedule Balance is the key to managing your energy levels. It’s the fuel that keeps you going towards your goals. Left to your own devices, some people working from home may end up putting in more hours than normal, while others can get distracted and do much less. If you schedule your day, you’re putting in a clear structure and as well as boundaries for yourself that will help hold you accountable. Have time slots for work and then separate slots for each for mind, body, soul and heart. For work, typically set a series of “60 minutes on” and “ten minutes off” slots of focused work. For your mind, set time to read or do online courses. For your body, set 30- to 60-minute time slots for daily exercise and try your best to do them at the same time each day. For your soul, set a period of time to meditate, relax in the bath and listen to music. And lastly, for your heart schedule time to help others – for example call a friend or a family member and check in on them, or offer to help someone online for free with your knowledge. Before you go to bed decide what one measurable thing will populate each of these areas and then wake up and achieve them, ticking them off in the process. 2 Clear your workspace Having a clear designated workspace at home can make a huge difference to your mental health – and your sofa, bed or noisy part of your home is not that place. If you can, find a quiet place with a nice view where you can work from a table each day. When you choose one space for work it sets an expectation to your brain that right now is the time for that laser focus work mode. Make sure the space you choose is clutter-free and has everything you need to get the work done. 3 Keep a healthy diet The food you eat will play a big role in keeping you happy. Now you’re working from home you have less opportunities to stop and have fast food or snack at strange hours. Plan your meals for the same time slots each day and have the food pre-prepared so it just needs to be heated or plated. If you are ordering in, try and make sure that at least during the working week you’re ordering from places that deliver healthy food. Collate a list of places that deliver healthy dishes or a set of healthy recipes for the week. Preparation is the key to success. Visit timeoutdubai.com for inspiration for healthy recipes and deliveries. 48 - 49_TOD_2012_S&W LEADER_11196920.indd 4821/04/2020 14:38:22timeoutdubai.com April 22 – May 19 2020 49 “Balance and preparation are the keys to success” FIVE MOTIVATIONAL PODCASTS The Tony Robbins Podcast Want to make a change in your life? Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations By Oprah Winfrey herself, this one will light you up. Left unmanaged, your phone can be a hindrance to success with just a simple beep or flash with a message or the incessant ringing taking your focus from your work to the phone. Try and have space in your day where you turn it off and put it in another room. Explain to your remote team that you will be checking it between certain times every day and stick to your own clear expectations. Remove it from your bedroom when you sleep, simply replacing it with an alarm clock and set a rule that you won’t look at it in the morning until after you have done the most important task of that day. O www.uaecoaching.com (055 138 7652). 4 Set colleague breaks Working from home can be lonely. Part of the enjoyment of going to an office is getting to chat or a have coffee break with your colleagues, so make that a part of your home working week, too. Set daily slots where you and a colleague stop work and login to Zoom for virtual coffee break and a catch up. Make sure this call is done away from your working area and ideally somewhere with fresh air, for example on your balcony or in your garden. 48 - 49_TOD_2012_S&W LEADER_11196920.indd 4921/04/2020 14:38:34Next >
