The menu keeps it healthy and simple, starring dishes such as hummus and dukka or smoked salmon and cream cheese on toast, through to pastries, smoothies and bowls. When looking for ways to describe Art Market, cool doesn’t even begin to cover it. Add to that the extensive drinks menu and the stunning location over the pier, and you’re in for one of the most enjoyable meals in the city. O Open Mon-Thu 6pm-1am; Fri noon-1am; Sat-Sun 2pm-1am. Bushra has an exciting menu (which had consultation from celebrity chef Greg Malouf) and dishes are undoubtedly well-crafted. You’ll Ànd Abu Dhabi’s Àrst branch of the Dubai favourite on the pier, but unlike the Dubai OG, in Abu Dhabi Daikan takes the form of an izakaya, expanding on its menu to include a wider variety of dishes and house beverages. It’s still small in scope, but a touch more varied, featuring a handful of starters and salads, plus small plates including gyoza, bao buns, sushi and sashimi. O Open Sun-Thu noon-midnight; Fri-Sat noon-1am. Yas Bay Waterfront, Yas Bay, (022 358 680). LOCATED ON THE buzzing Yas Island, Yas Bay Waterfront is a popular spot for grabbing a bite to eat – and with good reason. It would be easy for these eateries to rest on their laurels, given their location near top attractions such as Etihad Arena and Yas Marina Circuit, but these restaurants are worth a visit in their own right, with top food, superb service and a cracking view. 5HUNTER & BARREL This Australian steakhouse was such a success in Dubai that it set up shop on Yas Island, and has quickly gained a name for itself as one of the top restaurants in the neighbourhood. Signature grills and meat cuts are served on communal boards, designed for the table to share, so make sure you order a range of dishes to get a taste of a load of different things. There are also coal- roasted skewers and Àre-grilled burgers, so whatever you’re looking for, carnivores will be happy at this brilliant steakhouse. O Open daily 11am-1am. Licensed. The casual-chic restaurant prides itself on modern dishes, served with Áair (and with a side of a sensational view). With a tandoori grill and open kitchen, diners can admire the chef’s hard work, while there’s plenty of tableside theatrics too, from plumes of dry ice to a ‘Áavour blaster gun’. Dishes range from quirky – think duck cranberry chaat – to familiar, such as biryanis and curries, all of which you’ll love. O Open daily 1pm-2am. Licensed. But pan-Asian spot Mamafri has elevated its offerings for diners in the capital, making it a must- visit for everyone, even those who have been supporters of the Emirati-owned eatery from the day it opened. That isn’t to say there aren’t similarities with the OG branch in Jumeirah, though. The minimalist interiors remain, with dusty pink walks and plenty of complementary neutral tones in the furnishings, with the space dominated by a central wave-like structure running from top to bottom. Found at up-and-coming foodie hotspot Sheikha Fatima Park, Mamafri also boasts a lovely outdoor area with plenty of foliage, which becomes particularly lively after dark. Plates here focus on south east Asia, with must-try starters like the crispy beef served over mashed potato, the crispy chicken bao bun and the Asian Mamafri O Open Mon-Thu 1pm-1am; Fri-Sun 1pm-2am. Mamafri Abu Dhabi isn’t just good for those looking to get a taste of the Jumeirah restaurant without a long drive, it’s a fantastic restaurant full stop. And with longer opening hours thanks to the breakfast menu, you have no excuse for not visiting ASAP.timeoutabudhabi.com Dec 2023 – Jan 2024 55 NAMED FOR THS leafy South American drink mate, Maté is anything but the teashop its moniker may conjure up. Much like the Anglicised accent of the restaurant’s spelling, this Saadiyat steakhouse is the sum of two different influences – Argentinian and Lebanese. Set across two floors within the swish Park Hyatt, it’s clear Maté likes to play. Typically sultry steakhouse interiors are accented with novel motifs, including a colourful likeness of Maradona at the entrance, and at-times provocative serving vessels. Here you’ll Ànd an open-Àre open kitchen dominates centre stage, encircled by counter seating that’s the best in the house. Less immediately obvious, is what to order. Staff are knowledgeable and endlessly effusive of the menu, which is not as small as it might seem at Àrst glance. For indecisive diners it’s a potentially potent mix. Nevertheless, you’ll be hard- pressed to choose poorly. From the raw to the pastry-encased, slow-cooked to the Áash-grilled, every dish stands up to the last. Wagyu beef empanadas are everything they should be. Humita, a sweetcorn mash with provoleta cheese, comes served in a husk and highly recommended from the staff – and they’re not wrong. Yerba mate-smoked beef tartare is, on the palate, milder than a traditional European take, but there’s nothing slight about the presentation – arriving served in the brain cavity of a porcelain cow’s head. That’ll break the ice. Beef and steak form the bulk of the mains, though lamb, chicken and seafood get a nod. Cuts are all from Argentina, the US or Australia, with Maté’s 500g Argentinian rib-eye being a colossal undertaking for one. That said, there’s hope for a bit more Áexibility here, with the arrival of a whole new dry-aged offering said to be imminent, proving there’s room for evolution. We won’t give away the end of an average meal here, but if you’re all about nose- to-tail dining, we’re conÀdent you’ll enjoy Maté’s head-to-hoof approach. WHAT IS IT... Suave Argentinian steakhouse with Lebanese influence and a showpiece open kitchen WHY GO...
