< PreviousA t the core of water management are the twin aspects of quality and quantity. Rationalising water consumption and improving effl uent quality for reuse without endangering the intended use is in focus with most refi ners, as they progress towards a zero-discharge regime. Best practices which objectively compare effi ciency to a database of results from other refi neries in terms of tonnes of water per barrel processed, brings necessary focus on water management. Water management is a key enabler for better utilisation of freshwater and also to stay in compliance with regulatory requirements, it also helps optimise costs associated with energy (pumping), heating (steam use and boiler blowdown) and treatment (chemicals and resins). The EUR 12 billion facility consists of a gas processing plant, a gas chemical complex, and transport infrastructure covering over 4 square kilometers. The plant is designed to produce ethylene for commercial polymer production at a capacity of 3 million tons annually. It is unique in terms of both the volume of raw materials and products processed, and is designed to minimize waste and maximize the recycling of water. Volgogradnefteproekt (VNP) was hired to provide information management and construction support for this large-scale, complex project that mandated international coordination amid a tight timeline. Pushing the Boundaries of Digitalization With team members spread across multiple countries, VNP realized that successful project delivery required pushing the boundaries of data and digitalization to facilitate seamless, cost-eff ective information sharing and collaborative workfl ows. To optimize global coordination, information management, and construction support, they wanted to implement a multifaceted BIM solution. They also created and maintained a digital twin of the facility, considering operational needs during design, and maintaining the digital twin throughout engineering and construction to enable constant operational readiness. To do this, they needed integrated software that could handle voluminous data, enable visual planning, and monitor the construction process. To meet the project deliverables, they required construction modeling, enterprise asset creation, and engineering data management, while simultaneously controlling work progress, analyzing the as- built facility, and accommodating changes. Providing a Multifaceted Digital Twin Solution Already familiar with Bentley applications, VNP selected ProjectWise as the platform for collaboration and engineering data management, establishing a single source of truth to manage and share data among team members across Europe and China. They used SYNCHRO to perform construction simulation and create work packages for construction planning and management, while iTwin Services helped them review, compare, and assemble a 3D model that contains elements designed with Bentley’s BIM and third- party modeling applications. Using Bentley’s advanced interoperable technology, they created a digital twin that provided an integrated, dynamic environment where facility design, information modeling, and construction management occurred simultaneously. Technology Advancements Drive Savings and Smart Operations Through 3D modeling, digital information management, and visual construction planning, VNP minimized information gaps, saving six months to a year’s worth of additional organizational tasks. This methodology and Bentley software enabled timely receipt of all necessary materials at the construction site, potentially saving between 10% and 15% of lost craft time. The solution is expected to accelerate project completion by three to six months. Using Bentley’s advanced modeling and collaborative visualization technology, they designed a facility that recycled water, cutting the need for water extraction by 50%.
