The recent pandemic has caused signifi cant turbulence in the Middle East Oil and Gas industry due to sudden drop in global crude demand and production losses due to shortage of skilled manpower. Despite this uncertainty, some of the Middle East Downstream companies have proven to be the front-runners in the leveraging the power of digital transformation by revamping their operations in eff ort to boost productivity and operational effi ciency. However, the adoption of digitalisation is not uniform across all the companies. During this time of energy transition in a post-pandemic landscape, digital transformation considered to be the most promising approach for consistent growth. Industry to adopt a sustainable and forward-looking approach towards managing operations and information. Middle East downstream industry is at the cusp of a new era, implementing technologies like digital twin, integrated multi-dimensional information modelling, enterprise asset management and asset performance management to improve the overall productivity and reliability of the assets. What are the advantages gained by downstream companies by the adoption of digital transformation? Adoption of digital technologies provides multiple advantages at diff erent levels. Formation of digital thread across entire project and asset life cycle (concept to operations): As a part of information management process, creating a digital thread between information captured from various functions and assets, provide all the stakeholders ‘One-Stop’ and ‘At-the-Go’ referential access of integrated D O Y O U W A N T T O F E A T U R E I N F IV E M IN U T E S W IT H ? L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering (LTHE) has been pivotal in implementation of digital technologies throughout project execution lifecycle. Some of the technologies are as follows: Project lifecycle management and digital twin: At the business level, LTHE has implemented an enterprise-wide project lifecycle management programme ‘Epsilon’. This layer sits on top of transaction applications and provides a collaborative space for all project stakeholders to interact around a 3D-model based integrated workspace wherein project teams can plan together, share and view project progress, updates and manage change minimising the risk. This well- connected information network will be the foundation for business intelligence, analytics, and knowledge management. Epsilon provides huge business differentiators for LTHE: Improved productivity, shorter delivery schedules, cost competitiveness, better business and risk assurance, etc., truly transforming the business model of delivering EPCC projects. Virtual presence through merged reality: The recent pandemic posed major challenges due to shortage of skilled manpower at required location. Virtual presence for supervision and inspection using Merged Reality Platforms, helped overcome the issues related to travel restrictions by avoiding the physical presence. At the working edge, many new technologies are deployed to improve effi ciency and increase visibility on progress: (i) material tracking using QR Code, RFID and Digital Store; (ii) workmen engagement – building and leveraging a global workmen databank, profi ling workmen and sub-contractors for skills and experience, helped in ensuring availability of required work force for delivery assurance; and (iii) construction machinery productivity tracking through IoT, mobile- based progress updates. NEERAV MEHTA, DEPUTY GENERAL MANAGER, PROJECT CONTROL AND DIGITALISATION, L&T HYDROCARBON ENGINEERING Refining & Petrochemicals Middle East delves below the corporate strategy to understand what really makes the industry’s leaders tick information for better, faster, ultimately predictive decision making. During EPC execution, the real benefi t is effi ciency improvements through real-time information and single version of truth achieved through a digital twin. Integrating data collected from diff erent functions and furnish well summarised insights superimposed on 3D model largely optimise unproductive eff orts and improves communication. Health, safety, security and environment: Connected workmen enables proactive monitoring of safety parameters such as use of digital sensors and transmitters to track the movement of tagged personnel across work zones, into barricaded areas, or confi ned spaces raises alert. Virtual reality (VR) based training and induction tools on safe working, where workmen can, using VR glasses experience hazardous situations and get trained in handling these situations so as to avoid serious consequences of safety violations. Sustainable operations and throughput: Digitalisation of downstream assets has improved profi tability through effi ciency improvement and optimisation of operational and capital costs. It also reduces the eff ort required during turnaround operations, which subsequently reduces downtime and allows greater asset utilisation.
