< Previous"The idea that we are going with is that while we started with catering for the earthmoving equipment business, we will not stop there. We've ascertained LiuGong’s capabilities fi rst-hand by visiting their factories in China; we've seen the wide product range they have. We do not want to bite off more than we can chew. We are taking a prudent and pragmatic approach of fi rst digesting the synergy that GGT and LiuGong can potentially offer together before we expand, step by step,” Al Shaikh explains. And with LiuGong's manufacturing operations including almost an all-encompassing range of products, it would not be surprising to see GGT bringing the Chinese major's access equipment, mobile and tower cranes, and other products to the UAE either in the near future. For now, GGT's concentration remains on the earthmoving segment, including the compact equipment, and they have already introduced LiuGong's backhoe loader into the UAE in a step aimed at biting off a piece of perhaps the biggest machinery pie in the country. "We fi rst tested the LiuGong backhoe loader in the UAE and then introduced it in the market after we were satisfi ed that it met all the requirements with ease. It's a great product, fully loaded with options and safety features, easy to operate, easy to maintain and powerful. It measured up very well against its rivals,” Al Shaikh emphasises. “Initially, we introduced the most commonly- used products - the 20-, 30- and 40-tonne excavators and wheel loaders in the 5-tonne and 7-tonne categories. We tested all of these and introduced them very successfully in the UAE market. Then we started expanding the range by introducing the backhoe, again with great success. Our next move will be to introduce LiuGong's bulldozers and motor graders, which will be offi cially unveiled in the UAE very soon,” he reveals. This will be followed some months down the line by the introduction of LiuGong’s skid-steer loader to the UAE, in pursuance of GGT’s step-by-step policy. The range of concrete pumps that GGT offers from Korean brand KCP covers 40-56 metres, the most common heights in the UAE. Also available are KCP's stationary pumps and placing booms from 21-39 metres. “If I just sell a particular product to you once just for the sake of my profi t margin and it fails, you're not coming back to me. Instead, we want to become a partner for our customers and supply them the most reliable products that we've tested… thereby making a difference to their bottom lines” COVER STORY 30 | JULY 2024plantmachineryvehicles.comPlant / Machinery / Vehicles“Our region has some of the harshest environments in terms of heat, humidity, job-site conditions and even application requirements. We need to make sure that our products measure up to the challenges. Our aim is not to simply sell products but to be a partner for our customers,” Al Shaikh says. “If I just sell a particular product to you once, just for the sake of my profi t margin and it fails, you're not coming back to me. Instead, we want to become a partner for our customers and supply them the most reliable products that we've tested, and which they really need, thereby making a difference to their bottom lines.” IMPRESSIVE SUCCESS This approach has seen GGT notch up some impressive success already and in some of the harshest and most demanding sectors, like mining and quarrying. "We have been able to supply LiuGong excavators and wheel loaders to some important quarrying customers across the UAE. The machines we have supplied are working double shifts of up to 20 hours a day under some of the harshest conditions. And they are performing perfectly well, our customers tell us. Some of the GOING ELECTRIC WITH LIUGONG With electrifi cation of equipment the next big step for the industry, this is among the future thrusts at GGT in its LiuGong partnership. "LiuGong currently produces a full range of electric equipment, specifi cally wheel loaders, and they have sold over 2,000 units of electric wheel loaders worldwide, something that very few manufacturers have been able to do, including famous European ones,” says Anas Al Shaikh. "We're talking here about LiuGong's 5-tonne and 7-tonne series mainly, which are commonly used for various applications. LiuGong also has electric skid-steer loaders, electric excavators, dump trucks and single-drum rollers, as well as electric forklifts and electric transit mixers. They are developing more electric models rapidly. "With our own sustainability goals and aims of providing environmentally friendly equipment to our customers in the UAE, we are in talks with LiuGong to bring in their electric machines. We’re also in talks with key UAE clients who require such machines. We plan to deploy LiuGong’s electric wheel loaders to begin with before extending into their other electric models.” top contractor in the UAE, including in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, are using our machines, and we also have many units on long-term rental contracts. “We've also supplied multiple machines to the ready-mix concrete industry, mainly wheel loaders for the concrete plants, where work seldom stops and the machines are on gruelling, never-ending shifts constantly.” Speaking of the ready-mix sector brings us to another important product in GGT’s portfolio – KCP, the Korean manufacturer of concrete pumps. “They are known for robustness while keeping their products light weight to reduce fuel consumption. KCP has one of the highest rates of pumping in the concrete pumps market. And their machines are simple and easy to maintain, without complicated electronics that cause issues in aftersales,” Al Shaikh says. “Compared to several illustrious brands in the concrete equipment market, they are more competitive on price while still offering the same features and quality levels. This is perhaps why KCP has been very successful in the region and has many units operating throughout the various GCC countries. In the UAE, they are relatively new but going by our initial success, we have high expectations for them in this market also.” In terms of product innovation, KCP is producing an 85-metre pump for the US market, which is among the highest pumps in the world. “For the UAE, there are several KCP models that are very appropriate. The most common heights of pumps used in the UAE are 40-56m and KCP has covers that range with some quality models, as well as models with higher reach. The highest KCP model for the UAE is a 65-metre one. “Another advantage that GGT has for KCP customers is that with the Gargash Group also being the dealer for Mercedes-Benz Trucks, which are the commonly used chassis for concrete pumps, it gives us the ability to provide support for both the chassis as well as the pump. So we are like a one- stop-shop for our KCP customers.” KCP also makes stationary concrete pumps and placing booms, and GGT provides their full range of stationary pumps that can pump up to 400m. Their placing booms are all the way from 21m to 39m. CONCRETE SYNERGY While on the topic of concrete equipment, Al Shaikh adds that GGT is also in a position to provide another kind of synergy to customers in this area with LiuGong, whose extensive product portfolio also includes transit mixers. This means customers can come to GGT for both pumps as well as the transit mixers, dipping into each brand in the GGT portfolio. "We are now gathering information about the mixer market and exploring the market feasibility of the LiuGong mixers with our customers. LiuGong also manufactures concrete batching plants, so there is potential there for going another step in our concrete machinery line-up.” A cornerstone of GGT’s success is how seriously it takes aftersales support, providing 24/7 support to customers, AL Shaikh emphasises, adding that GGT has extensive stocks of parts readily available for all machines it supplies covering all its brands. “And our service team is on call round-the-clock and fully mobile to provide on-site assistance to customers wherever they are in the UAE. Our service team members are fully trained and certifi ed - and constantly upskilled - by our principals, and have the most up-to-date knowledge and expertise to resolve any issue that might come up. We've attended to numerous customer calls way past midnight and on public holidays. We know that for our customers, work never stops, so our support never stops either,” he underlines. With its thorough attention to detail and its future plans chalked out with key global OEMs such as LiuGong and KCP, GGT is well on its way to living up to all its expectations of carrying on the Gargash Group legacy of excellence – and ensuring that its growth never stops too. Starting in August 2022 Prism Logistics, one of India’s biggest project logistics companies, performed a record-breaking and unique transportation project up and until July 2023. The project involved transporting columns and reactors from Hazira, Dahej and Mangalore to Pachpadra in the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan With maximum dimensions of 55m in length, and almost 10m in width and height, and a weight of approximately 750 tonnes, a total Mundra port in seven convoys to Rajasthan Refi nery, a refi nery-cum-petrochemical complex in Barmer (Rajasthan). Subsequently, Prism faced the challenging task of covering the 600km by road from Mundra to Barmer. Along this route, the dedicated teams encountered fi ve railway level crossings in Gujarat and one in Rajasthan. To facilitate the smooth passage of the convoys, Prism had to coordinate with Indian Railways, obtain the necessary permits, and temporarily close the route at the level crossings. Prism also needed to obtain permits well in advance for the electric shutdown of numerous high-tension wires. In addition to that, the power of more than 1,000 regular electricity lines had to be shut down for the convoys to cross. Entire road furniture had to be removed - poles, culverts of 34 over-dimensional cargo items had to be transported over a distance of 600km. In total, 12,582 tonnes were moved. Prism had to prepare and organise the job with the corresponding thoroughness. Approximately 1,100 axle lines as well as more than 115 SPMTs were utilised in the transportation process. Over 50% of them were Goldhofer axles. The transportation process involved shipping the cargo items from Hazira, Dahej, and Mangalore by sea to Mundra. For the fi rst time ever in India, Prism used the possibility of side-loading and side-unloading the cargoes with the help of Goldhofer’s self-propelled PST modules. The extreme precision and manoeuvrability provided made it possible to handle the complicated task in confi ned spaces. A team of more than 400 professionals, including civil engineers, mechanical engineers, marine engineers and naval architects, was dedicated to designing solutions for this project, which is not only signifi cant in the history of logistics in India but was also benefi cial in terms of infrastructure and employment. PARTNERSHIP WITH CUSTOMERS “We are honoured that Prism Logistics, one of the largest project logistics companies in India, has chosen to rely primarily on Goldhofer’s transportation solutions for this record-breaking milestone in heavy haulage history,” says Jean- Philippe Martin, Director of Sales International Business at Goldhofer. “Our primary goal is to establish a partnership with our valued customers that is based on reliability and innovation. We are successful when our customers are, and we therefore congratulate Prism Logistics on the impressive completion of the project.” Prism Logistics was also a winner in the prestigious Goldhofer-sponsored category “Overland Transport Provider of the Year” at the Heavy Lift Awards 2023. Prism’s biggest challenge came when crossing the Narmada River Canal. Narmada River delivers water to the state of Rajasthan from the state of Gujarat. Liaison at the political level between two states was needed to get an offi cial permit from the Rajasthan state authorities to stop the water fl ow for 15 days. Then two steel bridges with a capacity of 1,500 t each had to be constructed in record time and parallel to Prism’s road transport team working to get the convoys up to the canal. Another challenge was posed by a 135km single-lane road from Gudamalani to Balotra. With a convoy spanning over 2km in length, regular traffi c was massively affected, and Prism’s teams had to undertake to cover the route as quickly as possible. Last but not least, Prism crossed the Luni River at Balotra by constructing a major bypass next to the road bridge. This includes the upgraded, second- generation 45ft and 52ft electric articulated boom lifts, the EC450AJ and EC520AJ. Following positive feedback on the performance of the fi rst-generation EC Series, JLG introduced these latest models in 2022 to meet the evolving demands of its customers. Updates include advanced battery technology, with an improved battery capacity of 10kW, and the option to upgrade the pack to 20kW for prolonged duty cycles and autonomy. JLG has also made improvements around cold weather performance, and the requested four-wheel drive option to increase terrain capability and expand its range of applications. The two models share the same base machine and the EC520AJ has a slightly longer boom than the EC450AJ. Like the fi rst-generation models, they use a dual parallelogram type riser, topped by a two-section telescopic boom and jib with 145 degrees of articulation. This allows for precise positioning and manoeuvrability in various work settings. Power comes from a 200Ah lithium-ion battery pack with a recharge time of 3.5 hours, through the 3kW onboard Zivan battery charger. A dual 400Ah battery pack is optional. This compares favourably to the standard 144Ah and optional 216Ah battery options on the fi rst-generation models. Two 220W integrated heaters have been added – replacing the fi rst generation external 400W heater blower – to improve the performance of the new machines in cold weather. HIGH WORK CYCLES The new models are capable of 30 work cycles at temperatures of 30 degrees, and 24 at -10 degrees (10kW battery). This increases to 60 work cycles at 30 degrees, and 48 at -10 degrees with the 20kW battery. Figures can vary due to ambient temperature, function speed settings, the age of the batteries, etc. The travel function is provided by two (standard) or four (optional) AC direct wheel electric drive motors. Both machines have an overall width of 2.26 metres and an overall height of 2.27 metres. For operators of the second-generation models, the fi ve-inch LCD display on the ground controls is now available as standard. In addition, to further enhance diagnostics, the new models are connected to an app, which shows battery- related information and confi guration settings. The second-generation EC boom lifts are helping to convince Swiss customers to invest in electric equipment. Technical Manager Michael Thomi says: “The EC booms have improved – we have not had any serious issues with them. And our customers are getting used to them and are increasingly looking for such solutions with electric machines.” ELECTRIFICATION EXPERTISE The EC450AJ and EC520AJ are manufactured by JLG subsidiary Hinowa, which is renowned for its advanced track designs and electrifi cation expertise as an early adopter and leader in lithium-ion technology. Hinowa has produced JLG compact crawler boom lifts since 2010, including electric, hybrid and diesel-powered models. Since the start of their collaboration, Hinowa and JLG have combined resources and shared knowledge to develop innovative products and elevate customer experiences. As Mahesh Narang, Oshkosh Executive Vice President and JLG President, says: “Combining our capabilities enables us to better serve customers and unlock more potential globally.” The second-generation EC boom lifts epitomise their successful partnership, according to Karel Huijser, General Manager for JLG in EMEA. “We are incredibly proud of our long- lasting partnership with Hinowa and to be one family now,” he says. “The EC Series Gen II introductions are a perfect example of how a collaboration based on sharing the same values, and an equal passion about product design and development, successfully works.” More information on the EC Series Gen II models is available at jlgelectricboomgen2.com. They have comparable lift speeds, manoeuvrability, and platform capacities to diesel-powered models, but deliver a cleaner, greener solution for emission-free job sites.” To put the second-generation EC boom lifts to the test in some of Europe’s most challenging working environments, JLG turned to its Finnish dealer, Rotator Oy. The main challenges for customers in Finland are low temperatures and muddy terrain during spring months. “Freezing cold, wind and snow can lead to problems,” says Service Manager Kai Huttunen. “When the temperature drops below -20°C, we tend to face problems such as starting machines, but engine heaters help to prevent this.” Charging in wintry conditions is also an issue: “Lithium batteries don’t charge below 0°C, so battery heating must be effi cient,” he adds. The two 220W integrated heaters quickly bring the battery cell temperature above zero, enabling it to be charged. “The quicker we warm the battery, the sooner it can be charged, resulting in less downtime and higher productivity,” explains Nicola. “Customers also want to know the battery capacity and how long the machine can be used – at least eight hours is crucial,” adds Kai. Having experienced both fi rst and second- generation EC boom lifts, Kai is impressed with the improvements JLG has made: “The charging system works so much better and you can use the machine for much longer periods of time.” Another potential issue in cold weather conditions is that the oil can thicken, but one of the new functions on the EC boom lifts enables the oil to be preheated: “It’s an excellent feature, especially in the Nordics, and it helps a lot,” says Kai. Electric machines are growing in popularity in Finland because they are more economical to run (the cost of electricity is between 80 and 90% cheaper than diesel) and require less maintenance than diesel alternatives (resulting in a 27% reduction in maintenance costs). And access to power sources is not a major concern for those considering investing in electric equipment, according to Kai: “The number of charging points is increasing – the industry is changing.” The Swiss construction market is also experiencing a shift towards electric equipment, according to spokespeople from JLG distributor Stirnimann AG. However, it’s a gradual transition, with concerns over supporting infrastructure and suffi cient charging points, the price of machines, and the ability to work for a day on a full charge. JLG has a proven track record for the reliability of its electric scissor lift and Toucan ranges, and is now aiming to strengthen its reputation in the country for larger models. “Customers believe in electric for smaller machines – scissor lifts for EMEA.
