It brings home the fact that, despite the biggest global meeting on mitigating climate change taking place on its shores, the Middle East still remains a very fossil-fuel-dependent region with a high-carbon economy. But the region is waking up. And, as it has done previously, when it wakes up it starts running. Take the sustainability initiatives of the various dealers in the region for example. As we went about compiling the annual PMV Dealers Power List – a fi xture in the magazine that has gained recognition and popularity over the years as the defi nitive list of the most notable names in the sector – we were amazed by the green initiatives of most of the entries on the list. Whether it is an Al Ghandi turning to hydrogen generators to power vehicle charging on its premises, a German Gulf installing solar PV panels to power its DIP facility, a FAMCO launching Volvo electric trucks in the region or a Kanoo Cranes bringing in all sorts of electric lifting equipment – the region is on the move, rapidly, when it comes to sustainable, green and decarbonisation initiatives. The biggest sign of this change – in both mindset and deed – is Volvo CE’s decision to send electric equipment to the UAE to put to work and test on a customer job-site. Volvo CE is, of course, among the pioneers of zero-emission machines and electromobility in the world of construction equipment. The Swedish giant already has a well-developed, proven and easily available range of electric equipment comprising small and medium wheeled loaders and excavators - and even the larger stuff, such as excavators in the over 20-tonne working weight category. Indeed, so extensive is the Volvo CE electric equipment line-up available in the advanced European and North American markets that contractors now need not use even a single model of internal-combustion- engined equipment for any generic construction task. And now, for the fi rst time, the UAE will be able to get a piece of that pie. Three Volvo CE machines – an electric mini excavator, a medium electric wheeled loader and a 20-tonne electric excavator – will spend the next few weeks being tested in the UAE at a local job-site before they, along with others of their kind, become absorbed into fl eets in the country. If this is not change then little else is. Speaking of change, though, the moment belongs to IVECO. In an epoch making step, the commercial vehicle major has put its money where its mouth is, spending over a billion dollars in developing and launching its completely renewed range of light and heavy trucks. It is very rare to see such a move from a major manufacturer on the world stage. Most follow the path of incremental changes and timely tweaks to keep their products up-to-date, believing no doubt in the adages of not upsetting the apple cart and leaving well-enough alone. But for IVECO, what it had was not nearly well enough for it. In one fell swoop, the company has introduced a multi-energy, future ready range. Hedging its bets and also paying attention to the short term, IVECO’s new range is a connected and data driven one, that has natural and biogas powered models along with electrics, making it ready for both the shift of tomorrow and the change of the future. The new HINO 300 serie strucks will help Al Fateh Group in their aim to boost their logistics capability for transporting frozen and fresh foods. S cania and SSAB have signed a letter of intent to decarbonise all steel deliveries from SSAB to Scania’s heavy-duty vehicles in 2030. Deliveries of SSABs Fossil- free™ steel is targeted to ramp up rapidly from smaller amounts starting in 2026 and will be key in the shift towards a sustainable transport system. SSAB is Scania’s main supplier of steel for its vehicles. The new deal, a next step in the long-standing relationship, caters for radically lowered climate emissions. The 100% ambition for decarbonised deliveries is among the boldest of intentions agreed between SSAB and a customer.
