Whatever it is, it’s certainly not sustainability. And not decarbonisation either. Shell is among the top embodiments and representatives of the carbon economy in most people’s minds. As such, the petroleum giant might even be a dirty word for some, epitomising all that is wrong with the consumerist world of today, where unbridled consumption leads to environmental destruction. I allude, of course, to gas guzzling vehicles that use the products that Shell and their ilk are famous – or make that infamous nowadays – for producing. In fact, along with Big-Pharma, Big-Tech and Big-Government, Big-Oil is another bugbear of the average friendly neighbourhood social crusader of our times – and Shell is emblematic of perhaps the most problematic of this group. Or was! For, behind the scenes, the erstwhile petroleum company has quietly morphed into an energy company. And this is no hyperbole or PR spiel. Whether we use fossil fuels or renewables, we will still need to consume energy from some source or another. And the point is also moot that oil is not going away in a hurry, given the world’s enormous energy demand and how far green energy production is lagging behind to fulfi l it. In this scenario, Shell literally shocked us at PMV Middle East when we attended their Ultimate Stopover event in Dubai last month. Here was a brand, which is still essentially a petroleum company, talking about reducing emissions, decarbonisation and cleaner commercial transport! And even more surprisingly, it has invested money into developing a prototype long-haul, heavy commercial truck simply to show the world how it’s done, with no plans of putting it into production to recover the R&D costs, nor even to sell the blueprint to a manufacturer. Shell is indeed walking the talk. Our cover story this month delves into the Shell event in Dubai and looks at the Shell Starship 3.0, the prototype that points the way to the future. As the Shell boffi ns said at the event, the transition to zero- emission cannot happen overnight. It will take incremental steps to reach the goal, and there are plenty of those steps that can be taken. Indeed the Starship effort is Shell’s way of showing that if conventional and traditional technologies are used well enough, the sustainability that can be achieved and carbon savings that can be gained without being disruptive are beyond what we imagine. And sustainability is a theme that runs through this month’s PMV Middle East, an apt theme given that Dubai hosts COP28 at the end of this month. Elsewhere in this issue, we shine the spotlight on various green efforts that stakeholders in the region’s PMV ecosystem are making – from Daimler Truck’s electric truck launches and the emphasis on catering for electric vehicles at this year’s Automechanika in Dubai to local giant Al Masaood Group showcasing its sustainability efforts at Adipec and its revolutionary Shams+ Charge venture to make the region ready for green EV charging. Given how notorious our region is for emissions, the efforts at going green that are being exerted leave us truly shell shocked... and in a good way! Enough said. The units will be used at Neom’s locations in Sharma Village on the Red Sea and Bajdah Desert Studios in Tabuk province in Saudi’s North West. Together they make up the largest sound stages and fi lm production support facilities in the country and the region. The units were sold and delivered by JLG’s distributor for Saudi Arabia, Cat rental store – Ejar. The lifts are NEOM Media’s fi rst aerial work platforms and the company says it selected the JLG equipment because of its quality and Ejar’s reputation. The deal also included maintenance contracts, and training for operators and service engineers. Ejar general manager Khaled Kamal said: “We recognised the vital role of skilled operators and provided comprehensive support and tailored training to ensure the seamless integration of these battery powered units into Neom Media’s workfl ow. It marks a signifi cant stride towards sustainable innovation. This milestone delivery showcases our commitment to excellence and underscores our dedication to zero emissions.” Mohamad Lakis of JLG added: “The delivery to the renowned Neom development represents a strategic win for JLG and includes the newly launched electric Rough Terrain scissors.” The Neom company is developing four regional resort areas in Saudi Arabia, Marine landscapes in the Red Sea, Lower desert, Mountain and Upper valley. The Neom name is derived from the ancient Greek prefi x of neo – or new, while the M comes from ‘Mustaqbal’, an Arabic word meaning future. $500 billion is being invested in the Neom project, by Saudi Arbia’s Public Investment Fund along with local and international investors. The DEVELON 53-tonne excavator is in demand in Saudi Arabia. H D Hyundai Infracore has won large scale orders from customers in Saudi Arabia and Brazil and will be supplying a total of 131 DEVELON excavators and wheel loaders to meet these orders. Thirty 53-tonne excavators and 50 large wheeled loaders will be supplied to two Saudi Arabian construction companies and used for the NEOM project. With the NEOM city project in progress, demand for large construction equipment has been increasing. To meet this demand, HD Hyundai Infracore has been implementing individual strategies such as active sales activities through its Dubai offi ce and new dealership openings near NEOM city with additional service personnel, to ensure these latest deals were secured. Including recent orders, HD Hyundai Infracore has recorded a total of 846 units for ‘Excavator, Wheel Loader, and ADT’ sales in Saudi Arabia, which is a 51.6% increase compared to the 558 units that it sold in the Kingdom the year before. Brazil also placed orders for 51 DEVELON excavators to meet its public infrastructure investment demand. Among the orders, twenty- two large excavators (80 tonne and 53 tonne) will be used for the railway construction project in Mato Grosso, and 29 units of 14 tonne mid- sized excavators will be used for the public bidding project in Rio Grande do Sul. A special feature of the Rio Grande do Sul project is that DEVELON will be providing 14 tonne excavators to its client exclusively as their request was to purchase equipment mounted with proprietary engines for better maintenance. A representative of HD Hyundai Infracore commented: “We continue to be successful in winning orders for DEVELON products from large global construction companies. We will use this as an opportunity to expand our market share for large equipment in other similar markets around the world.” At the same time, HD Hyundai Infracore is engaging in various marketing activities on and offl ine to enhance DEVELON’s brand presence globally and to strengthen its sales network including Out-of-home (OOH) advertisements in Colombia, Ghana, Brazil, Saudi Arabia airports, posting content on its Youtube channel and by hosting events for local dealers and customers. Announcing the new partnership HMEC said that it has “signed an agreement with Tamkeen, which is headquartered in Amman, to be appointed as their authorised representatives in the Jordanian market”. The agreement was signed by Manabu Arami, President, HMEC on behalf of Hitachi with Khalil Abdu Alrubb, Chairman, HINCO-TAMKEEN. Also present were Mohammed Jaber, General Manager, Tamkeen, and HMEC officials. Speaking about the new dealership signing, Piet Van Bakergem, General Manager - Marketing Department, HMEC, said the move came about in view of Tamkeen’s wide reach and capabilities in Jordan, which translate to better prospects for the Hitachi brand in the country. “Tamkeen is part of a very dynamic business in Jordan - a fresh, young investment group that is dedicated and on-the-ball with their activities. We believe Hitachi equipment and Hitachi customers in Jordan will be in very good hands with Tamkeen and its dynamism – which is why we decided to have them as our partners in the country,” Van Bakergem said. Tamkeen will provide Hitachi’s full range of equipment in the Jordanian market, he added. “Construction equipment will be a major thrust of course, but mining and other activities will certainly be in focus. Tamkeen has a good network in all of these fields, so at Hitachi we are very confident about our future with them in the country.” “The people at Tamkeen have decades of experience and expertise in the construction equipment sector, which enables them to serve our customers on the ground better. O nline crane rental platform MYCRANE has boosted its presence in the Middle East with the launch of its own operations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It follows the recent news that MYCRANE secured a substantial investment in a Series A round to fund the next phase of its global expansion. The Saudi Arabia operation, announced at Adipec, is part of an ongoing growth strategy for the Dubai-based tech platform, which can be used by those working in a wide variety of industries and sectors to hire cranes with a capacity of up to 750 tonnes quickly and effi ciently. “Saudi Arabia’s 2030 vision and diversifi cation strategy will be a boost to so many different sectors, so our launch in Saudi Arabia was a natural step,” said Andrei Geikalo, founder and CEO of MYCRANE. “We see no shortage of opportunities, particularly as Saudi Arabia has already committed to almost $1 trillion worth of construction and other projects, and announced plans to become a global logistics hub.” MYCRANE’s Saudi Arabia operation will be overseen by Piet Kraaijeveld, the company’s chief operating offi cer. Kraaijeveld is no stranger to the Gulf, having worked in the United Arab Emirates for a number of years, including for Mammoet as sales manager for the Middle East and Africa, and as a strategic account manager for Ritchie Bros, the world’s largest industrial auctioneer. Kraaijeveld’s fi rst task will be to onboard customers on the MYCRANE platform, help Saudi asset owners partner with MYCRANE to register their cranes, and assist in the recruitment of a network of sales executives throughout KSA. “The future success of the construction industry depends on its ability to adapt and leverage the latest technology, which is where MYCRANE has a valuable role to play,” said Kraaijeveld. “My career experience puts me in good stead to support our clients as we continue our expansion in the Middle East and beyond.” Dubai-based MYCRANE currently has more than 3,000 registered customers, and more than 15,000 cranes available to hire at the free- to-use platform. It also offers services such as a free crane selector tool to help identify the right crane, along with project advice and support.
