Well, just used to seeing them, probably – not dealing with them in your daily commute. For someone who lives near one such place, I deal with them like dodgem cars on my own daily commute, zigging between two tractor heads, each pulling two sets of trailers double stacked with containers, then zagging around a few 22-wheelers so laden with construction waste that no matter how hard their turbo-charged diesel power plants huffed and puffed, they couldn’t go faster than the pace of a snail crawling over sand paper. Admittedly, such zigging and zagging is not the ideal way to deal with the obstacle course that these huge cargo rigs present on UAE roads – but I’m not alone in this dangerous pursuit. If, like me, you work or live near any such areas frequented by these mega movers, then fret no more. A 65-tonne weight limit for heavy vehicles is now in place on UAE roads in a new law that came into force from October 1. As we are used to seeing with the UAE, the government is always proactive in bringing in the best rules, regulations and ways of working from around the world to keep the country functioning like a well-oiled machine. Such a rule was already overdue, given that the roads in the UAE – though some of the best-made anywhere in the world – still have a fi nite capacity to bear loads before they lose their smoothness that we love. Besides, no vehicle that is not purpose-built by the likes of Mammoet is meant to carry such loads – at least not without compromising its own safety and the safety of other road users around it. It is actually a wonder that 28% of trucks plying on UAE roads actually exceed this load limit, according to offi cial fi gures. Also not unusual with the UAE government, fi nes will only be imposed from February 1 next year, giving those in violation a four- month time period to amend their affairs. Procuring the proper vehicles for meeting the weight limit takes time and money, so the delayed imposition of fi nes is a welcome move. The law is a defi nitive step in pulling the UAE road transport industry up to global standards. Weight restrictions are strictly imposed in the EU, North America and quite a few Asian countries, such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. Importantly, with the law applying to vehicles from other countries transiting through the UAE, it is a fi rst step towards such regulations GCC-wide. As such, it is a step that carries great weight. Also a step with weight behind it is Hitachi Construction Machinery launching its backhoe loader in the Middle East. With the BX100 Shinrai Power a heavyweight like Hitachi at last joins the region’s backhoe bandwagon, proving how much market heft a relatively light- weight machine such as the BHL can command. We bring you the exclusive story of Hitachi’s backhoe loader launch in this issue, straight from the horse’s mouth, proving how much weight PMV Middle East’s coverage carries in the market! All the units handed over to ARASCO were Iveco S-Way AT440S47T 4×2 tractors. The handover was done at a ceremony in Dammam earlier in the year, not long after the truck was unveiled. The trucks were locally assembled at the AAA Riyadh facility and joined the ARASCO fl eet for the task of hauling chicken feed in bulk carrier semitrailers. Maan Gharaibeh, General Manager, AAA, said: “At AAA we are proudly enhancing our strategic partnership with ARASCO, who are leaders in Saudi Arabia in their fi eld. The delivery of this fi rst batch of the new Iveco S-Way trucks is further strengthened by a complete tailored aftersales solution package to ensure the maximum uptime for their expanding fl eet.” Alberto Pellegrini, Iveco’s Area Manager for Saudi Arabia, added: “After the Iveco S-Way launch held in Riyadh, we are really proud to talk about this success story with ARASCO, a benchmark and important infl uencer within the local long haulage distribution business sharing with us the same vision of quality and sustainability. “This new delivery for such distinctive application is a clear sign that together with Arabian Auto Agency Sales and Aftersales organisation, our valuable partner in this important mission, Iveco is continuing its growth in this challenging and competent Saudi Arabian market where we are quickly approaching the double-digit MS fi gure in 2023.” The Iveco S-Way is the company’s latest heavy- duty truck, built with a package of features centred on the driver experience, effi ciency and business productivity.
