With the conjunction of the importance that the backhoe loader has in the Middle East’s construction landscape and Bobcat’s preeminent market position in the compact equipment segment, the B730 can prove to be a seminal machine in the region. The Middle East, like India, is backhoe loader territory. While many brands have tried to make dents into runaway market-leader JCB’s domination of the segment, only those that have had any measure of success have done so with made-in-India machines. India knows a thing or two about manufacturing backhoe loaders, being the world’s largest producer of the machine as well as its biggest consumer with around 50% of global production sold in this one country alone. While the Middle East does not have India’s market numbers – and neither its manufacturing prowess – the versatile model with a loader at one end and an excavator arm at the other is equally the go-to equipment of choice in our region. In fact, it is not unusual for backhoe loaders to comprise 50% of all annual machinery sales in the Middle East. This means that any manufacturing aspiring for leadership in the regional market needs to have a popular ‘BHL’ in its arsenal. With JCB’s India-made machines the models of choice in the region, Case Construction Equipment followed suit some years ago by introducing its own made-in-India 570T and XT models, with both fi nding instant success. Bobcat, too, made a foray into the BHL segment a few years ago, but with models made in Europe. But now, after some production at its Chennai factory has fi nally been earmarked for the Middle East, Bobcat is ready to pounce. If history is anything to go by, we will not have to wait for time to tell how the new model fares. It’s destined to be a hit already. Which brings me to why we are only carrying such a short piece on it. Bobcat being the media savvy company that it is, only made this short announcement available. But fear not, we will have the full low down on the new B730 M-Series soon as the fi rst unit hits our shores. Watch this space. Elsewhere in this issue, we present the annual PMV Manufacturers Power List for 2023, shining the spotlight on the most powerful equipment and commercial vehicle brands in the region and highlighting their progress. On a personal note, as I write my fi rst Editor’s Letter for PMV Middle East , I look forward to renewing old friendships and making new ones in an industry with which I have had a long association and an even longer fascination. I hope for your generous cooperation as PMV and the industry progress together. It’s good to be back! According to JLG, ClearSky Smart Fleet is a breakthrough IoT (Internet of Things) technology that offers 25 unique features, including analysers, telematics and productivity applications, into a single connectivity beacon on JLG machines for seamless back-and-forth interaction through a comprehensive ClearSky mobile app, a user- friendly web portal or an advanced API. Equipment owners and operators can send a prompt to the beacon to identify a machine’s status or perform diagnostics wirelessly through the mobile app. Ara Eckel, director of product management for JLG’s connected solutions, explained: “ClearSky Smart Fleet is a bold, new frontier in fl eet connectivity. It’s a true, two-way fl eet management and communication platform that turns yesterday’s one-way data transmission into two-way interactivity that gets JLG equipment fl eets talking like never before.” According to Eckel, ClearSky Smart Fleet is more than yet another singular piece of software. It is built as a robust, constantly evolving IoT platform capable of delivering new functionality, new insights and new ways to run more effi cient, cost-effective operations. Developed from the ground up, the all-new ClearSky Smart Fleet app provides a modern mobile experience to manage data and machine interaction, even when cellular data and Wi-Fi are not available, JLG highlighted. KEY FEATURES OF THE MOBILE APP INCLUDE: FIND MY MACHINE — This feature activates audible and visual cues from the machine to make equipment identifi cation and location effortless. “With ClearSky Smart Fleet, equipment owners and operators can light a specifi c machine’s beacon or honk its horn with the tap of a screen,” said Eckel. MACHINE STATUS INDICATION — Visual cues from the machine allow equipment owners and operators to wirelessly identify a machine’s status, such as active diagnostic trouble codes (DTC)s, battery or fuel level, ignition and more “… simply by looking at the colour of the beacon”. DIGITAL ANALYsER — Perform diagnostics wirelessly with the built-in analyser functionality that replaces the JLG wired handheld analyser. DIGITIZED INFORMATION — Access to targeted information, such as parts and technical manuals, to help solve service issues without moving a step. COMING SOON: DIGITAL ANALYSER READER — A one-page summary shows a machine’s set-up, personalities, diagnostics and fault log data, which can be downloaded and shared. USER-FRIENDLY WEB PORTAL The ClearSky Smart Fleet web portal delivers clear, effi cient navigation and powerful features for immediate visibility into a fl eet’s health and performance data. To help digitise daily processes, the web portal features include: DYNAMIC DASHBOARD — Display as much data as needed through a dynamic, action-oriented dashboard. Eckel explained: “Whether a fl eet view or individual model view is wanted, powerful fi lters and tailored customization, including drag-and- drop window widgets allow any role to prioritize the actionable insights necessary to maximise productivity and ROI (return on investment).” MACHINE LEVEL DATA — Access to specifi c serial number and asset ID data, such as interactive schematics, knowledge articles, technical manuals and parts information, can be done in seconds. EXPORT — Generate reports and export the overview dashboard as a PDF or Excel fi le. UNIFIED LOGIN — ClearSky Smart Fleet is now part of Online Express, allowing for single sign-on and access using Online Express credentials. “By integrating ClearSky Smart Fleet into JLG’s Online Express service, equipment owners and operators can manage a fl eet, troubleshoot machine issues and order parts — everything they need to keep a fl eet in top shape — with a single login,” said Eckel. COMING SOON: AUTOMATIC SITE NETWORKS — Receive notifi cations when a machine arrives at or leaves a job site using the site network feature. “Site Networks act like automated geofences. When two or more machines are within range of a local connection, a site network is formed automatically, simplifying equipment tracking and reporting,” Eckel explained. ADVANCED API Equipment owners and operators can effortlessly combine actionable, JLG-rich, ClearSky Smart Fleet data into a current telematics solution to manage an entire mixed fl eet from a single screen, no matter where they are. “Our next-generation IoT platform offers an integrated, enhanced data feed to combine actionable, JLG-rich data into our customers’ in- house solution to manage their entire mixed fl eet from a single screen, maximizing effi ciencies and improving ROI,” Eckel concluded.
