CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT 21 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comJUNE 2023A fter showcasing fuel cell electric trucks for the fi rst time in 2022, Sweden-based trucking major, Volvo Trucks, has started testing the zero emissions trucks on public roads for the fi rst time. Last year, Volvo Trucks showcased its fuel cell electric trucks for the fi rst time. These zero emission trucks use hydrogen to produce their own electricity onboard, making them suitable for longer transport assignments. “Now, the trucks have been tested on public roads for the fi rst time. But not just any public road. To make it extra-challenging, the tests have been conducted above the Arctic Circle in the north of Sweden, in an extremely cold climate,” the company wrote in a statement posted on the website. According to the trucking major, fuel cell electric trucks powered by hydrogen will be especially suitable for longer distances and when using only batteries isn’t an option, for instance, in rural areas with no charging infrastructure. Commenting on the development, Helena VOLVO TRUCKS TESTS HYDROGEN-POWERED ELECTRIC TRUCKS ON PUBLIC ROADS Emitting only water vapour, hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks will be an important part of Volvo Trucks’ zero emission product portfolio Alsiö, VP Powertrain Product Management at Volvo Trucks, said, “Trucks are operating seven days a week and in all types of weather. The harsh conditions on public roads in northern Sweden, with ice, wind, and lots of snow, make an ideal testing environment. I am pleased to say that the tests are going well, confi rming tests we carried out beforehand, both digitally and on our confi ned test track close to Gothenburg.” COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THIS DECADE Volvo currently off ers the industry´s broadest product line-up of battery electric trucks, with six models in series production, catering to a very wide variety of transports in and between cities. The fuel-cell electric trucks will be available in the second half of this decade. Tests with hauliers will start a few years before the commercial launch, the company said. To speed up the development, Volvo Group has joined forces with Daimler to develop and produce fuel cell systems that are tailor-made for heavy-duty vehicles. POSSIBLE TO CUT CO2 ALREADY TODAY For hauliers who already want to off er zero emission transport , Volvo Trucks currently off ers six diff erent battery electric models as well as trucks that run on renewable fuels, such as biogas. “We need to act now in order to stop global warming. Regardless of the transport assignments or where in the world our customers are operating, waiting is not an option. In a few years, our customers will be able to completely eliminate CO2 exhaust emissions from their trucks,” said Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks. FUEL CELL ELECTRIC TRUCKS The fuel cell electric trucks will have an operational range comparable to many diesel trucks, up to 1, 000 km, and a refueling time of less than 15 minutes. The total weight of the truck can be around 65 tonnes or even higher, and the two fuel cells have the capacity to generate 300 kW of electricity onboard. Customer pilots will start in a few years and commercialisation is planned for the latter part of this decade. “Hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric trucks will be especially suitable for long distances and heavy, energy-demanding assignments. They could also be an option in countries where battery Volvo’s electric truck will have a range of up to 1,000 km TRUCKS 22 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comJUNE 2023charging possibilities are limited,” said Roger Alm. GENERATES ITS OWN ELECTRICITY A fuel cell generates its own electricity from the hydrogen onboard instead of being charged from an external source. The only biproduct emitted is water vapour. FUEL CELLS DELIVERED BY CELLCENTRIC The fuel cells will be supplied by Cellcentric, a joint venture between the Volvo Group and Daimler Truck AG. Cellcentric will build one of Europe’s largest series production facilities for fuel-cells, specially developed for heavy vehicles. MORE GREEN HYDROGEN NEEDED Fuel cell technology is still in an early phase of development and there are many benefi ts with the new technology, but also some challenges ahead. One of them is large-scale supply of green hydrogen. Another is the fact that refueling infrastructure for heavy vehicles is yet to be developed. The deal is the largest commercial order to date for Volvo electric trucks, and the fi rst 130 trucks will be delivered in 2023 and 2024, the release said. Following the deal, Holcim and its contractors have, with Volvo Trucks, agreed to plan for the deployment of 1,000 electric Volvo trucks across its operations in Europe over the course of the next seven years. The fi rst 130 electric Volvo FH and Volvo FM trucks will be delivered to markets including France, Germany, Switzerland and the UK during the fourth quarter of 2023 and throughout 2024. The agreement is a result of a wider partnership between Holcim and Volvo Group, the release said. “Long-term collaboration and a strong commitment to really make a diff erence are essential for making big CO2 reductions a reality. I’m very proud of the partnership we have developed with Holcim, and the results we are achieving together,” said Martin Lundstedt, President & CEO, Volvo Group. “The net-zero transition requires deep collaboration across value chains. We are excited to be partnering with Volvo to decarbonise our European operations’ logistics with electric fl eets, advancing our goal to reach 30% of zero-emission heavy-duty trucks by 2030,” said Jan Jenisch, Chairman and CEO of Holcim. By replacing 1,000 existing Volvo FH diesel trucks with Volvo FH Electric trucks using green electricity on a typical route, up to 50,000 tonnes of CO2 could be saved every year. Both companies are committed to the Science-based targets initiative (SBTi), which drives ambitious climate action in the private sector, and both are also founding members of First Movers Coalition (FMC) , a coalition of companies that use their purchasing power to create early markets for innovative clean technologies across eight hard-to-abate sectors. SBTi targets are considered ‘science-based’ if they are in line with what the latest climate science says is necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement - limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. A new bus can be a signifi cant investment, and unexpected repairs can quickly eat into profi ts. In response to this, Al Naboodah Group's commercial vehicles and heavy equipment (CVHE) division, operating under Swaidan Trading, is presenting a unique and exclusive opportunity for customers to acquire an Ashok Leyland bus through the Mega 5 - Five Promises proposition. This includes an unbeatable 5-year or 400,000 km warranty, and the fi rst payable service at 40,000 km or one year. A 5-year/400,000 km warranty can result in signifi cant savings over the lifespan of the bus. In addition, the warranty covers many major components, including the engine, transmission, and drivetrain, which are often the most expensive to repair or replace. By eliminating the worry of these costs, operators can focus on running their business and providing the best possible service to their customers. In addition, a more extended warranty period can also increase the resale value of the bus. Potential buyers will be more willing to pay a premium for a bus that is still covered by a comprehensive warranty, as they know they are protected against any unexpected repairs. Al Naboodah Group proudly holds the exclusive representation rights for Ashok Leyland buses in the UAE, cementing a longstanding and valued partnership with this renowned brand.
