I n the past few weeks, there have been a slew of electric heavy commercial vehicle launches in the region, clearly indicating a shift in the consumer preference to more environmentally friendly vehicles. Electric cars have been very popular in the region, but when it comes to commercial vehicles, most organisations have stuck to fossil fuels. However, this new trend indicates that organisations and individuals in the region are acknowledging the need to switch to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. Dealers in the MENA region are arguing that companies benefi t greatly by prioritising the use of electric engines in heavy machinery, even though both hydrogen-powered and electric engines are potential alternatives. But the problems related to storing, transporting, and using hydrogen mean electrifi cation is the only viable option for most users in the region. One of the biggest advantages of electric engines is that they can be fueled by locally produced energy by utilising the region’s enormous solar potential, eliminating reliance on imported fuels, and promoting energy independence. Leveraging this infrastructure for heavy machinery driven by electric engines would be a natural and cost-eff ective move because the region has made signifi cant investments in energy grids, enabling broad adoption of electric vehicles. Following the trend, road equipment providers and asphalt makers are also using new technology to become more effi cient in their operations. Moreover, the use of newer tools such as artifi cial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics is also gaining prominence in the region. Recognising the impact of new technologies in road construction in the future, we are dedicating the current issue to them. The deal will provide Ma’aden, through the joint venture, with access to IE’s breakthrough Typhoon™ geophysical survey technology, which will accelerate the exploration of Saudi Arabia, which is estimated to hold $1.3tn of untapped minerals. Ma’aden’s unprecedented exploration program is driven by the Kingdom’s ambitious Vision 2030, which positions mining as a third pillar of the Saudi economy. Under its new corporate strategy, Ma’aden aims to grow 10-fold by 2040 and to move into strategic minerals to fuel the growth of downstream industries in the Kingdom. The joint venture (JV) with Ivanhoe Electric will explore at least 48,500 square kilometres of land, an area larger than Denmark, covering highly prospective license areas with potential for major new copper, nickel, gold, silver, and other strategic mineral discoveries. The JV will deploy IE’s proprietary Typhoon™ technology and CGI software, which will strengthen Ma’aden’s exploration capabilities and grow its resource base and production pipeline. As part of the agreement, Ma’aden will acquire approximately 10.2 million common shares in IE, representing 9.9% of Ivanhoe Electric Inc for $126.5 million with a top-up option to maintain its 9.9% ownership. The JV will deploy $66 million of the $126.5 million to fund exploration activities and the purchase of three new generation Typhoon™ machines. Ma’aden has been granted the right to appoint a nominee to the IE board of directors. The formation of the JV and the acquisition of 9.9% shares in IE will only be eff ective after fulfi lling certain conditions. Robert Wilt, CEO of Ma’aden, said, “We are launching one of the largest exploration programs in the world in partnership with Ivanhoe Electric. It’s great to see companies like IE recognize the scale of the opportunity here. We have only scratched the surface of the potential in the Kingdom, and we need to explore faster, smarter and cover more ground to meet our long-term growth objectives. IE’s Typhoon technology will enable us to accelerate our exploration eff orts by six times, and de-risk and advance the development of a signifi cant exploration hub in the Kingdom. This is going to help put us on track to meet our 10x growth targets and fast track development of the Kingdom’s mineral riches.” Ivanhoe Executive Chairman, Robert Friedland commented, “We are excited to fi nalise our transaction terms with Ma’aden and begin the important work of minerals exploration in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Our joint venture will embark on the largest exploration program ever conducted using our highly powerful and disruptive Typhoon™ geophysical surveying system. With our TyphoonTM technology, our computational geosciences’ machine-based learning software, and the combined talents of our highly experienced team of women and men, we have all the tools necessary to conduct a transformational exploration program for electric and precious metals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The potential for future discoveries is extraordinary.” 6 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comJUNE 2023 MININGDAF TO SUPPLY 50 ELECTRIC TRUCKS TO EINRIDE E inride and DAF have signed a letter of intent for the supply of 50 fully electric new generation DAF trucks. PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comJUNE 2023 ELECTRIC TRUCK 7EMIRATES STEEL ARKAN’S Q1 2023 NET PROFIT DOUBLES TO $41.45 MILLION Emirates Steel Arkan is the UAE’s largest steel maker E mirates Steel Arkan, the largest listed steel and building materials company in the UAE, has seen its fi rst-quarter (Q1) net profi t shoot up by 110% to $41.45 million (AED152.2 million). In a statement, the steel company explained that its strong performance in the fi rst quarter of 2023 was driven by several factors such as increased volumes from the steel division, the penetration of new export markets, and increased sales of value-added products with enhanced margins. Emirates Steel Arkan had reported a net profi t of AED72.6 million in the fi rst three months of 2022, the statement noted. Revenue from the steel division totalled AED 2.14 billion for Q1 2023, from AED 1.81 billion in the equivalent period in 2022. Profi t from the steel division for the fi rst three months of 2023 was AED 137.5 million as compared to a net profi t of AED 61.1 million for the same period in 2022, an increase of 125%. Similarly, the revenues from the cement and blocks division was AED 211.2 million for the fi rst three months of 2023, compared to AED 183.2 million for the equivalent period in 2022. The division’s profi t was AED 10.6 million as compared to a AED 9.3 million for the same period of 2022. Commenting on the results, Eng Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group CEO, said, "Emirates Steel Arkan continued its strong fi nancial performance in the fi rst three months of 2023 with a doubling of net profi t year-on- year." He said, “This was driven by our entry into new markets, our focus on higher-value-added products with improved margins supported by favourable cost and pricing conditions, and further effi ciencies achieved in our expanded business whilst remaining focused on our sustainability mission." This refl ects the anticipated improvement in performance which we envisaged at the time of the strategic combination of Emirates Steel with Arkan, he added. As per the steel maker, higher profi tability in the fi rst quarter is mainly associated with both enhanced volumes and margins, supported by a continuing increase in the manufacture and sale of value-added products for both domestic and export markets, bolstered by an upturn in construction activities and higher demand for residential developments in the UAE and the wider GCC region. During the quarter Emirates Steel Arkan expanded into three new markets for steel and has successfully exported Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GRP) pipes to three projects in France, while maintaining its current market share in the UAE. Emirates Steel Arkan is actively contributing to the UAE's industrial strategy ‘Operation 300 billion’ by delivering market-leading products to local industries, creating job opportunities for UAE nationals, and enhancing its sustainable practices.
