< PreviousX PO, a pioneering company in France in the transport of goods using alternative energies, has announced an unprecedented agreement for the purchase of 100 electric trucks from Renault Trucks for its French fl eet. XPO’s investment follows a test carried out with a Renault Trucks E-Tech D 16-tonne electric truck in the Lyon and Paris region since October 2021. Renault Trucks has been a long-standing supplier to the XPO fl eet. To date, XPO has fi nalised the order for 65 electric trucks, with all 100 trucks to be delivered between the fourth quarter of 2022 and 2024. These 16 and 19 tonnes distribution trucks will be based at XPO’s LTL sites in France and used for the transport of palletised goods in partial batches. XPO is the leader in palletised distribution in France. XPO plans to make about 25% of its deliveries with electric vehicles by 2030, reducing its CO2 emissions by more than 26,000 tonnes. Together with its partner Renault Trucks, XPO is positioning its fl eet in anticipation of future regulations on deliveries in urban areas, while helping its customers to achieve their own decarbonisation objectives. More generally, XPO aims to reduce at least 25% of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 in France, compared to 2019. The economically viable Renault Trucks E-Tech trucks have a loading capacity of 18 to 21 pallets and are equipped with a 185 kW engine. With a range of up to 250 kilometres on a single charge, each truck reduces CO2 emissions by around 45.7 tonnes per year, compared to diesel-powered trucks. These vehicles operate without direct CO2 emissions and signifi cantly reduce noise and odor pollution, making them particularly suitable for deliveries in congested urban areas. They also emit less fi ne particles and vibrations, which reduces driving fatigue. Each truck is equipped with a 360° camera which reduces blind spots for optimal safety. Bruno Kloeckner, managing director – France, XPO Logistics, said, “We have had a positive experience with a fi rst Renault Trucks electric truck for deliveries in urban areas. Our new order for 100 fully electric trucks is an unprecedented agreement for XPO and Renault Trucks in France. We have also made a massive investment in equipping our sites with, to date, 80 electrical charging points. These commitments illustrate our desire to move towards more sustainable XPO ACCELERATES ITS TRANSITION TO SUSTAINABLE FLEET IN FRANCE WITH A LANDMARK INVESTMENT IN 100 ELECTRIC RENAULT TRUCKS VEHICLES 40 ELECTROMOBILITY PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comFEBRUARY 2023energies and to best support our customers in the decarbonisation of their activities.” Christophe Martin, managing director of Renault Trucks France, continues: “We are delighted to contribute to XPO’s energy transition by placing the largest order of Renault Trucks electric trucks in France. Our relationship with XPO has been built on trust for many years and it was one of the key factors that led to this important agreement. Renault Trucks is a leader in sustainable development on the French market, and as such, we have a duty to show the way towards sustainable transport . The company adapts its solutions to the specifi c needs of customers in various sectors such as consumer goods, trade and industry, as well as at world-class events. Its leadership in sustainable road transport in France includes: • Fifteen years as a signatory of the CO2 Charter and an active participant in the Objectif CO2 scheme of the French Ministry of Ecological Transition and Solidarity and the French Agency for the Environment and Energy Management (ADEME). • Pioneering introductions in alternative- fuel freight transport since 2015, with trucks running on liquefi ed natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG), both of which reduce fi ne particle emissions and emit 70% less nitrogen dioxide; and trucks running on biogas, which reduces CO2 emissions by 80%. XPO’s fl eet in France now includes 230 of these alternative-fuel vehicles. • A large 2020 investment in 500 vehicles from Renault Trucks, including tractor- trailers equipped with Euro VI-d-compliant diesel engines, the strictest European emissions standard. • A commitment to further decarbonize road transport activities by utilising more synthetic paraffi nic diesel (an HVO fuel) — a solution that can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% and reduce fi ne particles and NOx emissions by up to 30%. Do you expect demands for greener solutions in the GCC region to up in the near future? The increasing threat of climate change has been driving countries, including the GCC nations, to transition to more sustainable methods and achieve greener growth. We have witnessed the GCC countries, particularly UAE, taking serious measures to diversify their energy sources by shifting from heavy dependency on oil to investing in renewable energy sources like solar energy, wind energy, biofuel, etc. For this, the GCC countries are investing and putting in place various legislations and initiatives to encourage private participation to foster innovative green solutions in the region. Such measures from the government have further boosted the demand for sustainable solutions that can achieve economic sustainability while protecting the environment for future generations. Al Masaood Group has participated in the EcoWASTE. What are the highlights of your participation in the program? Our participation in the EcoWASTE Exhibition and Forum 2023 enabled us to exhibit our most recent environmental-friendly trucks from global brands UD Trucks and Renault Trucks that off er sustainable waste management solutions. The UAE market is constantly evolving, especially with the increasing interest and demand for more greener solutions. As a result, being a major player in the waste management industry, we are committed to off ering environmental-friendly and sustainable choices that meet the needs and demands of our customers. Our commitment to embracing a circular economy and building a green future is eff ectively underlined by our delivery of trucks from global brands which help achieve several sustainable development goals. How can your organisation help the UAE and other countries in waste management and other problems related to it? The fast-paced growth and development in the waste management sector in the GCC countries, particularly UAE, demands that we provide the latest technologies and innovations to fulfi l the needs and requirements of our customers. For this, we have partnered with leading companies across the world to bring global products and solutions to the country, ensuring that local industries have access to the best and most recent technologies. We are further expanding our off erings by introducing electric trucks to help reduce carbon emissions and fast-track the goals of the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative. Besides this, the division also off ers innovative products and services that are designed to meet the needs of customers from varied sectors - including the waste management sector. What are your suggestions for effi ciently managing EcoWaste in the country? Over the past ten years, waste production in the UAE has increased owing to the growing population and diverse economic activities. A major proportion of the waste is being disposed off in landfi lls or dumpsites run by municipalities, where organic waste produces a signifi cant amount of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. The private and public sectors must come together to lay further emphasis on accelerating the implementation of the circular economy model in the country, which promotes the elimination of waste and the continual safe use of natural resources. Waste management challenges in the country should be addressed by sustainable measures such as recycling, transforming waste into energy and other various resources, technological advances, and enhanced waste sorting and collection systems.
