This is a big deal for an industry that depends on product demonstrations and face-to- face meetings to create demand. Heavy equipment trade shows need a large-scale format in the world’s top manufacturing hubs in order to off er a value proposition for local and international visitors. This limits their frequency and venue options around the world, which is the reason there cannot be replacements for shows like Bauma Munich, Intermat or Conexpo, which are held once in every three years in Germany, France and the US, respectively. The last two years saw a void in this market due to the cancellation of Intermat 2021 and the postponement of Bauma 2022, originally scheduled for April. Although Bauma China is held every two years and was the only major industry event that wasn’t cancelled during the pandemic in 2020, it doesn’t have the international draw of the triennial expos. The previous edition of Bauma Munich in 2019 attracted over 3,600 exhibitors and 600,000 visitors. The offi cial exhibitor numbers for this year are not available, but anticipation is high among those returning to the show. In the beginning of 2022, 97% of the available space of 614,000m 2 had been confi rmed with good representation from the construction and mining sectors, and the latest visitor information indicates the show will have over 3,000 exhibitors. Despite positive trends in demand, some market leaders have decided not to participate this year. Volvo Construction Equipment was among the fi rst companies to withdraw from Bauma Munich 2022 to focus on localized Volvo-branded events. The company attributes its new marketing approach to signifi cant changes in customer behaviour due to the pandemic, and it plans to engage with customers by increasing investment in digital channels and campaigns. Caterpillar, which has always had a joint stand with its dealers at Bauma Munich, decided that the Cat brand will be represented this year exclusively by Zeppelin, its dealer in Germany and 12 other markets in Europe. JLG is another example: the manufacturer pulled out of Bauma to focus on small, localised in- person events, hybrid events and personalized virtual experiences. The company recently demonstrated this approach with a hybrid event in the UK which attracted customers from around the world. The event featured product demonstrations and keynote presentations in physical and virtual environments, simultaneously, for those unable to attend in person. We’ve yet to see a major impact of digital-only marketing and hybrid events on the sales of heavy equipment or commercial vehicles. Besides, none of the abovementioned companies have ruled out their participation in future exhibitions. Their decisions are a refl ection of the uncertainty of our times when there’s strong demand for heavy equipment but manufacturers are tackling one supply chain disruption aft er another and fi nding it diffi cult to forecast sales. These impressive proportions combine with a maximum platform capacity of 907kg, providing all the muscle necessary to tackle big projects at height. The S9070RT-HC is the largest in Snorkel’s line of large-deck scissor lifts, which was designed to meet customer demand for increased jobsite productivity. Larger decks and higher platform capacities enable operators to do more work and reload less, saving precious time that would otherwise be spent raising, lowering and reloading the lift. In addition to off ering increased jobsite effi ciency, the platform of the S9070RT-HC features an extra-wide pallet gate, so it can be easily loaded with a telehandler. This enables an operator to complete the loading process in a single pass, reducing the opportunity for error or accident, and it’s a much safer method of loading than suspending loads from a crane. The S9070RT-HC has fold-down guardrails to achieve a minimum stowed height of 2.5m with ground clearance of 356mm. Featuring proportional controls, this machine boasts smooth operation and precision on any job site. This scissor lift has a maximum drive height of 13.1m, is rated to a maximum wind speed of 12.5m/s, a maximum drive speed of 6.7km/h while stowed, and has a raise/lower time of 70/40 seconds. The dual powered extension decks and four hydraulic stabilizers with automatic leveling of up to 6° front to rear and 12° side to side on uneven surfaces off ers the perfect combination of size and stability for big jobs. With rough-terrain design and gradeability of 50°, the S9070RT-HC isn’t just rugged, it’s versatile enough for most outdoor jobsites. With the addition of optional non-marking foam-fi lled tires, it’s also the ideal machine for indoor jobsites that require large loads and an extensive work space, such as remodeling or restoration on larger buildings like museums and cathedrals. Engineers have kept operators in mind when designing the safety features of the S9070RT-HC. A larger platform design allows the operator to better access at height, and operators are less likely to need to lean over handrail if they can easily get close enough to the work area. A wide platform fi ts bigger and longer materials, and the added space means they are less likely to fall or get caught. D-rings have also been added on the platform to allow loads to be securely tied down for more sturdy transport. And a locking, oscillating axle allows front tires to conform to the ground and keep contact even on rough terrain, which improves and enhances stability and traction. The S9070RT-HC also off ers the option for a ‘Cold Weather Package’ for work in extreme outdoor environments. Pandey told the gathering that a focus on autonomous driving, connected cars, electric vehicles, and shared mobility is changing the supplier product mix with a new emphasis on e-motor technologies and battery innovations and a shift away from body exterior and engine systems, suspensions, and wheels. He pointed to a rise in new electric vehicle OEMs which are helping generate an uplift in sustainability. “There’s no question that in the future, suppliers with more sustainable footprints will have an advantage in terms of pricing and margin,” he said while predicting that EVs could exceed 15% of the annual auto market in four years. The sustainability focus, said Pandey, is likely to lead to new sector growth opportunities with the market for e-motor and battery management systems, battery and fuel F our key sector disruptors – technology, new OEMs, sustainability and a dip in light vehicle sales – have been identifi ed as shaping the future of the automotive sector with a heightened sustainability focus now shifting the component landscape. However, Pandey warned that the sector’s sustainability goals will only be achieved through collaboration across the entire automotive value chain. “The way the industry is addressing these ongoing challenges is by encouraging more cross-industry collaboration and using advanced technology to increase visibility across the supply chain which is imperative to future success. “Networks of automotive OEMs and technology companies are also coming together to address industry challenges such as supply chain issues, secure data transfer and management, electrifi cation of the industry including vehicles and charging stations, battery lifecycle management, and sustainable business practices that lead to carbon footprint reductions.” Pandey also highlighted a decline in light vehicle sales and forecasts the sector may have to wait until 2030 before it regains 2019 sales levels. Also speaking at the Networking Day was Irfan Tansel, CEO, Al Masaood Automobiles, who looked at current and future mobility trends to watch. According to Tansel, electrifi cation is one of the key industry focal points now: “Electrifi cation is absolutely the next thing that is happening. The industry driver at the moment comes from emission regulations put in place to protect our planet. What is needed to drive this sector forward, especially here in the MENA region, is EV infrastructure and how governments are going to make the shift to reach their individual net-zero goals. “Another driver of increased electric car adoption is aff ordability. At the moment the electric version of a combustion engine vehicle costs 50% more, and if you add on the cost of installation of charging stations at your home or offi ce, this price only increases. New sector breakthroughs will be unveiled at Automechanika Dubai 2022’s dedicated Innovation Zone where manufacturers and brands will showcase innovative technology, digital solutions, autonomous vehicles, EV charging stations and components to support the sector’s ongoing transformation. Industry professionals will also be able to meet and network with experts and thought leaders at the Automechanika Academy to explore the latest trends, innovations and changing dynamics in the automotive aftermarket sector. The event will also host the Automechanika Dubai Awards for Excellence where individuals, organisations, and products across the GCC will be recognised for their outstanding performance, exceptional service quality, sustainability initiatives and achievements. consumers, so investment in research to make EVs more aff ordable to the masses is important. The Dubai Network was held ahead of this year’s Automechanika Dubai, the Middle East and Africa’s largest international trade show for the automotive aftermarket industry, which will run at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 22–24 November. Automechanika Dubai 2022 will look to build on last year’s hugely successful edition which attracted 20,574 visitors from 129 nations, 578 exhibitors from 47 countries, and 12 offi cial country pavilions. Mahmut Gazi Bilikozen, Automechanika Dubai’s show director, is confi dent the show will register further growth this November with the exhibitor survey revealing that 95% of the 2021 participants are planning to return for Automechanika Dubai 2022.
