This age-old question comes up from time to time when we evaluate the cost vs benefi ts of investing in a new car, house or business equipment. We can all agree that equipment rental is becoming more attractive for contractors and end- users as they gain access to the most advanced and well maintained machines without the risks involved in capital purchases, breakdowns, or downtime as the rental company takes responsibility for transportation, storage, maintenance, and repair of the machines. Renting also solves the problem of disposal of assets aft er completion of projects. In fact, rental has become so attractive that we fi nd many dealers entering the rental business themselves. Only companies that have long-term visibility of projects can aff ord to purchase equipment. For the majority of end users, the priority this year would be to minimize overheads and improve their bottom line. Therefore, the demand for rental equipment will continue to increase in 2021 as it allows companies to allocate their capital and other resources for emergencies and recovery through the downturn. It also enables selection and procurement of the right machines, especially for jobs with time constraints and tight budgets. Rental companies have capitalized on this demand by investing in a diverse inventory of equipment and expanding their regional presence in order to become one-stop- shops for variety of earthmoving, access, lift ing, and power equipment. In this issue, we feature top rental industry players in the inaugural PMV Rental Power List. The Power List features profi les of prominent rental companies in the Middle East that have strong corporate leadership, market leadership, company culture and a clear growth strategy for the post-COVID era. There could also be a moral argument for equipment rental. The European Rental Association (ERA) calls rental the perfect circular model because it minimises the carbon footprint of construction equipment with less waste and through shared usage of assets. Rental also extends the lifetime of equipment and places emphasis on proper recycling. Two years ago, three independent research companies, the Climate Neutral Group, CE Delft and SGS Search, calculated the CO2 emissions during the full life-cycle of equipment representative of the portfolio of ERA members. The research concluded that effi cient use lowers the total carbon footprint of the pieces of equipment and that the rental business model stimulates effi cient use. Depending on specifi c user practice, the ERA estimates that this can lead to signifi cant reductions, in the range of 30% and sometimes over 50%. The ERA recently launched the Equipment CO2 Calculator, an independent and free- to-use online tool to enable equipment users to make more sustainable choices when using construction equipment. The calculator determines the carbon footprint of all types of construction equipment over its entire lifecycle. The results provide an estimate of the carbon footprint per hour of use, allowing construction equipment users to, for example, compare diff erent use scenarios, investigate which part of the lifecycle contributes most to the carbon footprint and evaluate the eff ects of alternative fuel choices. Thus, equipment users can make the most environmentally sustainable choices when deciding whether to rent, lease or purchase equipment, evaluate areas for improvement and, ultimately, reduce their carbon footprint.T he Hitachi ZW220-G wheel loader is available in the Middle East market as a rebranded version of the KCM 80Z5 model from Kawasaki Construction Machinery (KCM), following the fi nal merger of KCM and Hitachi Construction Machinery in 2019. The ZW220-G has a bucket capacity of 2.6–4.5m3 and operating weight of 17,615– 17,850kg. The Japanese-made HINO J08C-TI diesel engine of the wheel loader does not require any special diagnostic equipment or computer for service. Compared with elec- tronic controlled high pressure fuel injection system, a wide range of fuel and engine oil can be used. Standard torque proportioning dif- ferentials improve traction in slippery conditions. For applications with extreme traction requirements, the optional limited slip diff erential provides additional traction capability. An energy effi cient design of the hydraulic system provides for steering fl ow to supplement the main circuit once steering demand is met. This allows for full utilization of the pump capacity for effi cient operation in all conditions. The operator’s cab is fully certifi ed to meet all rollover protective structure (ROPS) and falling object protective structure (FOPS) regulations. Viscous cab mounts reduce vibra- tion and noise. A fully adjustable suspension seat, tilt and telescopic steering and an easy- to-read monitor and gauge enhance operator comfort and productivity. The ZW220-G has a basic design that elim- inates excessive functions to enhance pro- ductivity, durability, and reliability in harsh conditions. This also simplifi es maintenance and reduces downtime, thus lowering operat- ing costs. Maintenance is enhanced with the engine access panels that can be opened wide for better access. Filters are conveniently located for easy change and the grease fi ttings are grouped to reduce maintenance time and insure proper lubrication. Piet Bakergem, general manager, Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East Cor- poration, said: “Wheel loaders that work in harsh conditions are subjected to dust, heat and shock constantly, which requires them to be extremely reliable. Easy maintenance and simplifi ed servicing are the key features of the ZW220-G, which gives the wheel loader the durability and dependability necessary for any unforgiving jobsite condition.” HITACHI’S ZW220-G WHEEL LOADER IS A WORKHORSE FOR HARSH CONDITIONS EARTHMOVERS 06 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAPRIL 2021L iebherr has upgraded two models in the XPower large wheel loader series – the L 550 XPower and L 556 XPower – with reinforced lift arms, improved working hydraulics, and increased tip load, breakout force and engine power. The L 550 XPower and L 556 XPower wheel loaders, which are used primarily in indus- trial operations such as in waste disposal, are equipped with the power-split travel drive, installed as standard in all Liebherr XPower wheel loaders. By increasing the engine power on both models, the travel drive is even more powerful with consistently low consumption, such as when accelerating or penetrating into material, and it’s no diff erent when the wheel loaders are equipped with heavy protective devices or solid rubber tyres for industrial operations. An increase in performance in the working hydraulics has enabled dynamic lift and tip functions, irrespective of the size or weight of the working tool. Structural modifi cations to the lift arms have paved the way for higher breakout, holding and retrieval forces than before. As a result, operators are now able to effi ciently manipulate challenging materials such as scrap metal, paper, compost and logs, particularly in the upper lifting range. For the L 550 and L 556 XPower wheel load- ers, Liebherr off ers four lift arm versions in the form of z-bar kinematics and industrial kinematics both in standard and high lift confi gurations. Customers can choose which of the four versions best meets their require- ments at the time of ordering. Liebherr has overhauled all four versions of the lift arms as part of the model update, as well as reinforcing the steel construction. The modifi ed z-bar kinematics on the L 550 and L 556 wheel loaders off ers strength in the lower lifting range and higher breakout forces than before. The maximum force is produced when, for example, the bucket or attachment is working close to the ground and breaks mate- rial out of a pile. This is an important feature when picking up and loading rocks, gravel or construction debris. Liebherr has also overhauled the indus- trial kinematics of both wheel loaders. The industrial kinematics is tailored to industrial operations that frequently require operators to work with heavy working tools such as light material buckets, high dump buckets and log grapplers. In addition, the industrial kinemat- ics off ers parallel guidance, which is ideal for operating forklifts. The high lift version (one for both z-bar and industrial kinematics) has extended lift arms for increased reach and more productive load- ing at a great height. The overhaul of the lift arms has increased the tip load, which means that operators of the new L 550 XPower and L 556 XPower can work with larger buckets than before, and move more material in each loading process. Liebherr has taken this as an opportunity to reconfi gure the design of the buckets on both models. Consequently, customers can now more accurately tailor the individual modules and wear parts of the buckets to their needs at the time of ordering. The fully automatic Likufi x quick coupler system, historically a feature of Liebherr hydraulic excavators, is being made avail- able for the L 550 XPower and L 556 XPower wheel loaders for the fi rst time which allows operators to switch mechanical and hydraulic attachments and tools from inside the cab at the press of a button.
