The larger the lift ing capacity of cranes, the easier it becomes to build and upgrade petrochemical plants, FPSO and FLNG vessels as the modules used in their construction can be prefabricated off -site as larger and heavier units and then transported and installed in single lift s. This allows EPCs to consider construction methodologies involving heavier components than ever before to expedite the schedules and increase cost-eff ectiveness of their projects. High lift ing capacity alone won’t meet the needs of projects that increasingly face space restrictions. While maintaining and upgrading refi neries, the biggest challenge faced by heavy haulage companies is the lack of space to transport and lift oversized loads and avoiding interference with refi nery processes. Contractors face the same challenges in cities where complex lift ing and transport operations need to be executed in highly congested areas without disrupting daily life and public transport networks. Therefore, large cranes also need to have a small footprint. The cover story in this issue explores how Mammoet found solutions to the abovementioned challenges with two of its new models, the Focus30 and SK,6000. The Focus30 is a 2,500t crane that can be assembled vertically, allowing it to operate with a small footprint in areas with complex infrastructure and space limitations such as petrochemical plants and inner cities. The product development strategy adopted by Mammoet for the Focus30 was centred on vertical assembly, similar to tower cranes. The SK,6000 is a 6,000t land-based crane suited to building FPSO and FLNG vessels without the need to rotate either the modules on land, or the ship. This allows EPCs to push the weights of modules beyond the 3,000t and even 4,000 barriers. Mammoet continues to push these barriers with its SK10,000, the THERE’S ALWAYS A NEED FOR HIGH CAPACITY AND DUTY CYCLE PO Box 500024, Dubai, UAE Tel: +971 4 444 3000 Web: www.itp.com Offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, London & Mumbai ITP MEDIA GROUP CEO Ali Akawi Managing Director Alex Reeve EDITORIAL Editor Dennis Daniel dennis.daniel@itp.com +9714 444 3615 ADVERTISING Group Sales Manager Anup Nagpurkar anup.nagpurkar@itp.com +971 4 444 3573 ITP LIVE General Manager Ahmad Bashour ahmad.bashour@itp.com +971 4 444 3549 PHOTOGRAPHY Senior Photographers Efraim Evidor, Adel Rashid Staff Photographers Aasiya Jagadeesh, Ajith Narendra, Fritz John Asuro, Yuliya Petrovich, Jessica Samson. In this issue, we focus extensively on heavy lift ing and heavy transport equipment and projects. Al Faris Group recently lift ed the longest suspended bridge in the Northern Emirates that connects the two buildings of the new Mövenpick Resort at Al Marjan Island, Ras Al Khaimah. The company also started operations in Iraq this year with a brand-new fl eet of heavy lift ing and heavy haulage equipment. Saren’s largest crane, the SGC-250 (aka Big Carl) recently lift ed a 382T steel band that will encase one of the reactors at the Hinkley Point C nuclear plant in the UK. Sarens has also been working the UAE since 2019 with Lamprell to upend and lift 48 of its newly-fabricated wind farm jackets. The project is currently ongoing across two Lamprell facilities, in Sharjah and Hamriyah. From the heavy transport segment, we feature Goldhofer’s new generation of self-tracking semi lowloaders, Scheuerle’s and Kamag’s modular transporters and special vehicles. We also fi nd out how the TII brands collaborate with other heavy lift ing and transport companies to solve complex transportation challenges. One of the growth markets for duty cycle cranes, despite the impact of the pandemic, has been dynamic compaction, a technique used to increase soil density by dropping a heavy weight repeatedly from diff erent heights on the ground. UAE-based Salim Equipment Rental decided to enter this niche market in 2020. In less than a year, the rental company has procured four Liebherr duty cycle cranes for ground improvement and land reclamation projects. The high utilisation achieved by these cranes during 2020 indicates the resilience of the dynamic compaction market. The investments was a big step for Salim Equipment Rental as it happened during the peak of the pandemic, and the company expects all its four duty cycle cranes to be busy on soil improvement sites throughout 2021.E uro Auctions, world leading auctioneers of construction, agricultural and earthmoving machinery, now hold the only regular 'live' auction in the Middle East at their permanent auction site in Dubai. Demand for heavy equipment on the platform, which is operated by Ritchie Bros., has increased by 28% last year compared to 2019’s fi gures. According to Phillip Weston, key accounts manager at Ritchie Bros. Middle East, construction companies are increasingly turning to online marketplace platforms to search for more convenient asset disposition and purchasing alternatives during COVID-19 disruption. He said: “This upsurge is predominantly due to factors such as country-wide lockdowns and global travel restrictions, which are making attendance at traditional, live auction events more diffi cult. Furthermore, a shift towards online auction solutions was already underway before the pandemic, which has exponentially sped up its popularity.” Marketplace-E operates in several sectors, including construction, transportation, agriculture, energy, oil and gas and mining as a subsidiary of Ritchie Bros., the world’s largest heavy equipment auction company. The online platform operates a reserve price, Phillip Weston, key accounts manager, Ritchie Bros. Middle East. 24/7 online service off ering customers end- to-end asset management solutions that over the years have helped tens of thousands of organisations sell and buy machinery, heavy equipment, trucks, and other industrial assets. Unlike Ritchie Bros.’ other popular quarterly Online Timed Auctions, sellers on Marketplace-E can achieve quicker results through regular weekly auctions with relatively low selling costs and access to a global online audience of buyers. Marketplace-E sells the equipment from the consignor’s location, eliminating transportation costs for the seller. Detailed inspection reports and photos of inventory feature prominently on the site. They are designed to create a higher degree of buyer confi dence, which is especially important as inventory is sold ‘as is, where is’. Typically, Marketplace-E inventory ranges from excavators, crawler tractors, wheel loaders, and backhoes to articulated dump trucks, mobile cranes, and more. More recently, increasing numbers of buses, pickup trucks and passenger vehicles are being consigned, further broadening inventory and the range of options for buyers. "Marketplace-E has grown signifi cantly in popularity since its launch. This pivot towards more online asset disposition solutions results from a heavy investment in technology over the last two decades to increase internet participation at Ritchie Bros. auctions," said Weston. "Marketplace-E diff ers from our other quarterly Online Timed Auctions being open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, satisfying an important need in the market for immediacy that reserve price auctions can off er. With Marketplace-E, we have a solution for every customer need.” Weston continued: "Our team has worked hard over the past twelve months to drive this strong double-digit bidder growth from the Middle East and Africa regions. Interestingly, with an easy-to-use website, Marketplace-E enables sellers to increase their global reach by accessing new buyer groups from remote regions through our strong online infrastructure and digital marketing channels. Furthermore, we have introduced new buyers not previously interested in purchasing from auctions but willing to pay a premium to get top of the line used assets right away. This way, they don't need to wait for the next auction. If they need machinery or heavy equipment now, they can source it immediately from Marketplace-E.” 08 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comMARCH 2021 AUCTIONS RITCHIE BROS.'
