The virtual workshops will be hosted by IPAF, each month featur- ing diff erent equipment manufac- turers presenting the important points to consider when carrying out six or twelve-month inspections on MEWP or MCWP equipment. The sessions are designed to assist engineers or inspectors, enhancing awareness of general principles, and increas- ing specifi c product knowledge. The fi rst virtual workshop for MEWP inspectors was held on 29 September, in conjunction with experts from IPAF member JLG. The session delivered general tips and pointers to consider when carrying out a MEWP inspection, as well as specifi c product information relating to JLG’s key machine types Jason Woods, IPAF’s regional manager, Middle East and South Asia, said: “We cur- rently have a further 14 workshops planned over the next few months. We are grateful to equipment manufacturers, national and regional governing bodies in helping to make these important sessions happen. We share the same goal of teaching others to be more eff ective when carrying out these vital equip- ment inspection tasks. Already we have more than 220 engineers regis- tered, but there are still some places available and we urge anyone being asked to carry out six or twelve- monthly inspections to join the free virtual workshop.” “At IPAF our goals are to reduce the risk of accidents and develop a greater understanding of MEWP and MCWP safety across all industries using powered access to perform work at height. We are pleased to off er third-party engineers this chance to get an in-depth look at some of these machines in a virtual, Covid-secure set- ting, and we hope those who participate will benefi t from enhanced, direct communication with some of the powered access industry’s leading manufacturers,” he added. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a one-month fi eld campaign to inspect vehicles tyres. The aim is to create awareness among motorists about the stipu- lations set for tyres and their importance to public safety. The campaign is aligned with RTA’s eff orts to increase road safety in Dubai. September auction in Dubai reported the highest number of bidders of the year and broke a fi ve- year site record with the attendance of more than 1,289 bidders from 86 countries. The number of bidding registrations went 32% up compared to the same auction a year ago. According to Ritchie Bros., there has been a large increase in people joining the – now entirely held online – auctions for the fi rst time. A total of 2,090 lots were sold in the online auc- tion that was open for bidding over several days. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, and Iraq were the top-fi ve buyer countries in the Middle East. The USA, Canada, India, Netherlands, and the UK were the top- fi ve outside the region. Concerning the type of sold equipment, the leading asset categories were hydraulic excava- tors, wheel loaders, all-terrain cranes, crawler tractors, and hydraulic truck cranes. Motor graders, access equipment, SUVs and other items were also sold in the company’s third Dubai auction of 2020. Due to COVID-19, Ritchie Bros. shifted en- tirely to holding its auctions online. In Europe and the Middle East, the company exclusively uses its so-called Timed Auction system, allowing bidders to bid over several days until the auctions close easily. Eduard Faig, Ritchie Bros., said: “Our timed auction bidding system is super easy and fun to use. Bidders have more time and are notifi ed when they’re outbid and when they are in the lead. There’s a lot of item information and photos available on our website, but bidders can still come to our auction site to inspect items of interest before they place bids. Our customers here in the region love the onsite auction experience, but online bidding is steadily growing here as well. With our Dubai team’s support, many customers from the re- gion placed their fi rst online bids and were very positive about the experience. We’re already building up inventory for our fi nal Dubai auc- tion in 2020.” The Euro Auctions Dubai sale in September attracted bidders from 65 countries among which bidders from 21 countries made purchases on the day of the auction. Online bids came from 19 countries, and the top fi ve bidding regions were the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Netherlands, UK and Africa. According to Euro Auctions, the one-day sale resulted in 33% of all bids being trans- acted online. The average lot prices were up by over 63% from the same sale in September 2019. First time bidder registrations for this sale were boosted signifi cantly by nearly 300% with 20% of those new bidders placing suc- cessful winning bids. Derek Bleakly, general manager of Euro Auctions, Dubai, said: “Plant and machinery auctions are no longer seen as the place to dump old, poor quality, low-spec machinery. Although oil is still a major player in the en- ergy industry, especially with the recent discoveries of new oil fi elds in the UAE, the future di- rection looks towards the adop- tion of more renewable energy sources. A future without oil is part and parcel of the growing sustainable development discus- sions in the region and this is rightly so. In a world of energy, a new era has begun following the rapid ascent of key trends and developments such as renew- ables, electric cars, smart grids, low-carbon economic growth and many more. These trends have emerged as a result of the mounting international calls for better care and protection of the environment and natural resources amid the impact of cli- mate change. With the global power de- mand expecting to remain in an upward trajectory in the coming years - 50 per cent increase by 2050 as per an industry report - securing energy supply and access while keeping sustainability in mind has become imperative. This led experts to ad- vanced technologies and innovative solutions to build a power infrastructure that is not only reliable, cost-effi cient and resilient but sustainable as well. In the GCC, the member states have been embracing clean and renewable energy gen- eration to meet the growing demand. This is not only the job of the public sector. The private sector entities have a critical role to play to deliver a sustainable power generation method that works. At Al Masaood Power Division, we know how crucial our role is in this regard as an organization involved in the development of various new technologies for energy genera- tion. This is the reason we have committed to becoming the UAE Government’s active partner in helping prepare the country for a post-oil era. The Division has been planning for this pe- riod by implementing relevant initiatives and programs according to top industry trends, which include continued invest- ments in renewable energy that have started over the last de- cade. Funding in renewable en- ergy will pour in despite trends showing that natural gas will remain the primary source of power in the region. The cur- rent share of natural gas stands at approximately 65 per cent of the region’s total electricity needs. Digitalization is also at the center of our undertakings to enhance safety, deliver cost- effi cient savings and stream- line and achieve sustainability in our processes. We know for a fact that power systems with real-time sensors allow en- hanced monitoring and con- trol of assets and help avoid shutdowns through preventive maintenance. For smart grids, they provide valuable data on consumption, thus leading to better load forecasting, ensur- ing grid stability and reducing idle capacity. We seek to deliver similar benefi ts and more. We are also looking at invest- ing in hydrogen, which has been identifi ed as a ‘fuel of the future’ since its production from renew- able energy sources is sustainable. Hydrogen can also be used to store electrical energy for several weeks, which is a breakthrough in storing renewable energy. As a clean, envi- ronmentally benign and a sustainable-energy carrier, hydrogen holds the potential to pro- vide a reliable supply of energy for meeting the growing global energy needs. All these strategies are essential to Al Ma- saood Power Division’s path towards the fu- ture. They will reshape the organization’s journey and redefi ne its market leadership in the 21st century. The three new radial port tyres are suitable for vehicles travelling long distances, typically in load & carry applications on a large port, such as heavy forklift trucks, empty container handlers, reach stackers, straddle carriers and terminal tractors. On the bright side, the current situation has given Continental an extension to its pilot testing phase with customers in the region. Hamzeh Afaneh, head of marketing & sales – sub-region Middle East/Africa, Commercial Specialty Tires, Continental Tires, says: “We have utilized this period to conduct more tests with these tyres under diff erent operating con- ditions unique to this region, mainly extreme heat and pressure. As a result, we have a better understanding of the specifi c operational requirements of our customers and how we need to customize the tyres to suit them. The feedback from customers has been positive, particularly the lower total cost of ownership achieved by using our new port tyres.” Continental’s radial tyres feature a single steel body construction: the sidewall and tread work independently of each other, which makes the contact patch stiff er and wider with a more even distribution on the ground surface. This ensures an improved traction and braking behaviour as well as a more even tread wear when transporting containers over longer distances from one location to another. Furthermore, radial tyres minimise heat generation, and a fl at tread contour ensures a high level of endurance and mileage over longer distances. “The applications of radial tyres depend on the environmental conditions at ports and the advancements in port handling equipment. We expect signifi cant demand from this sector due to the restructuring and expansion of ports in the region, including dry ports, which are expanding their container handling capacities and upgrading their equipment,” says Afaneh. The ContiRT20 has been developed for the requirements of empty container handlers and heavy forklift trucks used in port and industri- al applications. When loading and unloading containers, traction on all kinds of surfaces is important. The tyre design therefore features a high number of multiple tread edges off ering a good grip and high mileage performance. The large robust tread blocks are linked with tie bars to provide tread stability with less vibration and a stable delivery of tractive forces. Tyre life is maximized due to the tread compound with a high resistance to abrasive wear. The tyres are available in 24” sizes: 12.00 R 24 and 14.00 R 24. The ContainerMaster R is an all-round tyre that can be used in both pick & stack and load & carry applications. With its open shoulder design and deep tread depth, the tyre performs best on heavy forklifts, reach stackers and loaded container handler/ top Loaders, where a high tyre mileage and lifetime is important. With its multiple steel belt construction and deep u-shaped tread grooves, the tyre ejects stones and foreign ob- jects from port surfaces increasing resistance to damage that can cause punctures. This eff ect is enhanced with the innovative tread compound with a high resistance to tread cracking leading to increased durability. The StraddleMaster R has been developed CONTINENTAL’S NEW PORT RADIAL TYRES TO HAVE MARKET WIDE LAUNCH IN Q1 2021 Hamzeh Afaneh, head of marketing & sales – sub-region Middle East/Africa, Commercial Specialty Tires, Continental Tires. TYRES 18 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.pmvmiddleeast.comNOVEMBER 2020earthmoving equipment under its General Tire brand. “We cannot stop developing new tyres for construction applications because when this sector revives, there’ll be increased demand for more sizes and new specifi cations. Gener- ally, demand is shifting toward radial tyres in all segments. That said, certain customers continue to use cross-ply tyres for skid-steer and wheel loader applications. That’s why we will off er radial, cross-ply an v.ply tyres to meet all customer needs. The new range of General Tire cross-ply tyres will cover several sizes, and we hope to launch them in 2021,” says Afaneh. “We also have long-term plans to launch new tyres for mining equipment and expand the number of sizes, beyond the 51- and 49- inch models that are hugely successful in the Middle East. In the truck and bus category, there’s high competition among premium and budget brands. Here we diff erentiate ourselves with digital solutions for fl eet management,” he adds. As companies all over the world accelerate their digitalization eff orts in response to the COVID-19 crisis, Continental is building on its expertise in mobility and interconnected services and combining tyres with data analytics to help customers optimize their operations. While the ContiConnect and ContiPressureCheck tools enable digital tyre monitoring for single vehicles and fl eets, the ContiLogger service off ers individual consult- ing to OTR customers to help them reduce their operating costs through fi eld studies and on-site data analysis. Afaneh points out that Continental has embraced the new normal and the digital transformation necessary for the post- COVID era. “Every tyre or digital tool we develop is aimed at helping customers tackle their operational challenges, manage fl eets bet- ter and reduce the total cost of ownership. With the ContiLogger service, we are now able to analyze customer sites and operating conditions thoroughly and direct our R&D department to customize products accord- ingly. Currently, we off er ContiLogger in the Middle East as a support tool without any additional cost to the customer. In future, we will off er it as a consulting service that includes recommendations and solutions to optimize fl eets. We are open to partner- ships with telematics providers to provide integrated fl eet management solutions so that the customer benefi ts from having a single dashboard to monitor all parameters,” says Afaneh. for the requirements of straddle and shuttle carriers operating in load & carry applications. The central tyre rib and the closed shoulder ensure longitudinal driving and cornering stability resulting in a high driver comfort and steering precision which is needed when transporting containers over longer distances in ports. The tyre is ideally suited even in wet conditions: Due to the deep wide longitudinal tread grooves, water is dissipated quickly to ensure that traction is maintained. The tread compound ensures a low heat build-up and reduced wear in higher speed and longer dis- tance applications. This leads to an increased lifetime and endurance of the tyre. All the three models will come with factory- installed tyre sensors that measure infl ation pressure and tyre temperature, simplifying pressure maintenance to increase the overall lifetime of the tyre and allowing customers to avoid tyre-related downtimes. Material handling is one of the three main product categories of the Continental Com- mercial Specialty Tyres (CST) business divi- sion, with the other two being earthmoving and agriculture. The CST business includes digital tyre monitoring and management systems such as ContiConnect, ContiPressure- Check, and ContiLogger. Sales in the earthmoving category has been aff ected with the recent slowdown in con- struction activity. However, product develop- ment for this sector is in full swing. Next year, Continental will launch the E5/L5 versions of its EM-Master range of earthmoving off the road (OTR) tyres. The company also plans to introduce a new range of cross-ply tyres for The StraddleMaster R, ContainerMaster R, and ContiRT20 are suitable for vehicles travelling long distances, typically in load & carry applications on a large port.
