However, many of AEM’s member companies have not escaped the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Equipment manufacturers were declared “essential” businesses by the federal government and the majority of governors across the country, which allowed them to keep their doors open and workers on the shop fl oor. However, more than one-third of AEM member companies furloughed up to half of their employees, and one in fi ve companies laid off as many as 10 percent of their workforce. Research shows in the next decade 2.4 million manufacturing jobs in the United States will go unfi lled due to a shortage of skilled workers. To meet the current and future workforce needs, elected offi cials must champion pro-manufacturing policies by eliminating tariff s imposed on manufacturing inputs, opening up more markets to trade, modernizing and rebuilding infrastructure, and supporting farmers and ranchers. According to AEM, voters are increasingly worried about U.S. manufacturing this election year and there’s clearly more work to be done by both President Trump and former Vice President Biden to convince voters how they plan to support this critical sector of the U.S. economy moving forward. A recent poll conducted by data intelligence company Morning Consult, in partnership with AEM, highlights that eighty- one percent of registered U.S. voters say a candidate’s position on manufacturing will infl uence their choice for president. Nine out of ten registered voters believed it was important for elected offi cials to support American manufacturers during this WHAT U.S. MANUFACTURERS EXPECT FROM THEIR NEW PRESIDENT PO Box 500024, Dubai, UAE Tel: +971 4 444 3000 Web: www.itp.com Offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, London & Mumbai ITP MEDIA GROUP CEO Ali Akawi Managing Director Sue Holt EDITORIAL Editor Dennis Daniel dennis.daniel@itp.com +9714 444 3615 ADVERTISING Group Sales Manager Anup Nagpurkar anup.nagpurkar@itp.com +971 4 444 3573 ITP LIVE General Manager Ahmad Bashour ahmad.bashour@itp.com +971 4 444 3549 PHOTOGRAPHY Senior Photographers Efraim Evidor, Adel Rashid Staff Photographers Aasiya Jagadeesh, Ajith Narendra, Fritz John Asuro, Yuliya Petrovich, Jessica Samson. And with the manufacturing sector’s impact on the economy, the poll shows that presidential candidates need to step up their eff orts to support the industry. Fift y percent of voters indicate President Trump has done a “just fair” or “poor” job supporting manufacturing, while forty- four percent of voters believe Democratic candidate Joe Biden would do a “just fair” or “poor” job supporting manufacturing. A comparison of each presidential candidate’s automotive policies by Cars. com, a digital marketplace that connects car shoppers with sellers, has indicated that regardless of who enters the White House in January, impact from COVID-19 on the automotive industry is likely to continue and may require additional attention from policy makers in the future. The candidates do not diff er much on the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement under President Trump. However, it will take years to see the fi nal impact on where automakers build their vehicles. To date, there are few signs that the USMCA is bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. from abroad. According to Joe Wiesenfelder, executive editor for Cars.com, regardless of campaign pledges, once production begins in a plant, country or hemisphere, relocating that platform is more expensive than most tariff s, penalties or trade restrictions the manufacturer might encounter. However, if either candidate focuses on lower-tier manufacturing, it is possible to see more auto parts plants move to the U.S. To keep manufacturing front and center during the 2020 election, AEM launched a groundbreaking get-out-the-vote campaign in August. The campaign, called ‘Equipped to Vote’ has engaged with voters and provided them with the information they need to support pro-manufacturing candidates in November.THIS MONTH IN THE PMV INDUSTRY NEWS Bobcat is entering the small articulated loader (SAL) market with two models, the L23 and L28, designed and built in North Dakota, USA. With the new Bobcat SALs, the tradi- tional attributes of high performance in a compact size, agility and versatility are now complemented by a light touch on the ground and increased lift capacity for lower weight machines. All of this is provided in comfort- able, easy-to-drive vehicles that are also easily transported by trailer. Bobcat SALs achieve minimal ground disturbance with their use of an articulated joint, which enables the rear tyres to match the front tyre path when turning. In addition, the turf-safe mode limits wheel slippage. This makes Bobcat SALs suitable for landscaping, light construction, agriculture and mainte- nance projects where space is tight and lower ground contact is needed. John Chattaway, loaders product manager, Bobcat, said: “The high lift capacity off ered by Bobcat SALs compared to their machine weight is ideal for lift and carry operations in compact areas. The extendable boom on the L28 further simplifi es the placement of loads which is also enhanced by the all-round vis- ibility. Counterweight options allow our SALs to be customized to give users the capacity they need for a particular application.” Bobcat will be providing more detailed specifi cations of the SAL range at the com- mercial launch date, which is planned for early 2021. Bobcat is also off ering a full range of light compaction machinery, developed in col- laboration with the Ammann Group. The new Bobcat light compaction range covers seven diff erent product families and 37 models in total, to meet work requirements on almost any construction job site. The range includes vibratory rammers, vibratory forward plates, reversible vibratory plates, hydrostatic plates, walk behind rollers, rrench rollers, and tan- dem rollers. Neutral Fuels has developed an app that alerts Dulsco when waste oil is ready for col- lection from its customers. Using bespoke tech- nology to track and record oil from collection to delivery adds visibility to the whole process and streamlines logistics. Dulsco’s waste oil will be transported in eco-friendly reusable oil containers (ROCs) designed and patented by Neutral Fuels. The ROCs are durable, light- weight, manoeuvrable and able to withstand high temperatures. This collaboration supports two of UAE’s key environmental targets - cutting CO2 emis- sions by 70% and increasing clean energy use by 50% by 2050; and diverting more than 75% of waste from landfi ll by 2021. David Stockton, CEO, Dulsco, said: “This collaboration will benefi t our customers, in- cluding hotels, restaurants and malls. Instead of sending their used oil to landfi ll, customers will appreciate the chance to recycle them locally ENOC Link, the digital mobile fuel delivery service for businesses in the UAE, is off ering bio-diesel fuel (B5, B20 and B100) for com- mercial fl eets. The recent expansion in ENOC Link’s operations makes it the only the only digital mobile fuelling operator in the UAE to off er customers bio-diesel. Biodiesel is an advanced alternative green fuel, commonly used for diesel engines and has proven to signifi cantly reduce carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. The product, which has been tested and certifi ed in the UAE, is used by many companies in the transport and logistics sector as well as in construction as it also helps improve engine performance. ENOC Link has deployed multiple dedicated biodiesel delivery trucks with tank capacities varying from 800 to 5,000 litres to serve existing and prospect customers; ensuring that demand for biodiesel can be met. ENOC Link plans to expand the fl eet to meet increasing customer demand in the near future. Saif Humaid Al Falasi, group CEO, ENOC, said: “We have seen an increasing interest from business customers opting for cleaner fuel options that will not only reduce emis- sion levels, but enhance operational effi cien- cies; trends that are in line with the UAE’s Vision 2021 to conserve the environment driving infrastructure development. By ex- panding our operations and through ENOC Link, we are now able to provide our custom- ers with a high-quality bio-diesel. We remain committed to support our customers with their fueling needs while ensuring a diversi- fi ed fuel mix; aligning with our nation’s goal towards a cleaner and greener environment.” NEUTRAL FUELS PARTNERS WITH DULSCO TO RECYCLE WASTE COOKING OIL INTO BIOFUEL ENOC LINK LAUNCHES BIODIESEL FOR COMMERCIAL FLEETS into biofuel. This will reduce environmental pollution and feed into the country’s circular economy, positioning our customers as envi- ronmentally conscious businesses contributing to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.” Karl Feilder, CEO, Neutral Fuels, said: “We use only local waste oil to make our biofuel; so the more waste oil we have, the more biofuel we can make. Not only is this the most sustain- able way to operate a company whose business is cutting CO2 emissions, it also generates in-country value from end to end.” NEWS08 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.pmvmiddleeast.comNOVEMBER 2020Next >
