APRIL 2020 VOLUME 14 ISSUE 04 22 31EDITOR’S LETTER 04 BY DENNIS DANIEL PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.pmvmiddleeast.comAPRIL 2020 TThe International Monetary Fund (IMF) has confi rmed our worst fear, other than dying from COVID-19: the outlook for global growth in 2020 is negative. In other words, we’re facing a recession “at least as bad as during the global fi nancial crisis or worse.” Investors have already removed $83 billion from emerging markets since the beginning of the crisis, the largest capital outfl ow ever recorded. According to McKinsey & Company, if there’s delayed recovery, large-scale quarantines, travel restrictions, and social- distancing measures will drive a sharp fall in consumer and business spending until the end of Q2, producing a recession. In this scenario, although the outbreak comes under control in most parts of the world by late in Q2, the self-reinforcing dynamics of a recession kick in and prolong the slump until the end of Q3. Consumers stay home, businesses lose revenue and lay off workers, and unemployment levels rise sharply. Business investment contracts, and corporate bankruptcies soar, putting signifi cant pressure on the banking and fi nancial system. While the economic impact of COVID-19 will be severe, the IMF expects recovery in 2021; the faster the virus stops, the quicker and stronger the recovery will be. Businesses will have to adjust to a new normal, and this does not only mean social distancing and working from home but also the impact of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors on the long-term strength of companies. According to the World Economic Forum, building a resilient business is increasingly dependent on preparing for the impact of non-fi nancial factors, including those related to ESG issues. As social tensions and similar trends become more acute, these external social and environmental factors will become tangible fi nancial costs for companies. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has assessed the impact of the COVID-19 on international tourism as follows: an expected fall of between 20-30% could translate into a decline in international tourism receipts (exports) of between $300-450 billion, almost one third of the $1.5 trillion generated in 2019. Taking into account past market trends, this would mean that between fi ve and seven years’ worth of growth will be lost to COVID-19. Putting this into context, UNWTO notes that in 2009, on the back of the global economic crisis, international tourist arrivals declined by 4%, while the SARS outbreak led to a decline of just 0.4% in 2003. All industry events planned for the next quarter have either been cancelled or postponed. The biggest trade show of this year, CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2020 expo in Las Vegas, was concluded a success before the number of COVID-19 cases escalated in the US. The show management worked closely with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and the Southern Nevada Health District to make sure exhibitors, vendors and attendees were provided with heightened cleaning services and hand sanitizers to help reduce the spread of germs and enable show participation to stay healthy onsite at the show. According to the organisers, registrations for the show totaled over 130,000, and cancellations from international attendees totaled less than 1%. US buyer attendance increased 8% from the 2017 show, and total buyer attendance improved by almost 5%. Overall contractor and producer attendance grew by 14%, and attendees purchased a record-breaking 75,622 tickets for education sessions at the show, a 46% increase from the 2017 show. Several product launches at the show are featured in this issue.YANMAR manufactures medium- and high-speed diesel engines for commercial duty.
