< PreviousADIPEC PREVIEW oilandgasmiddleeast.com30 November 2024 WHAT TO EXPECT AT ADIPEC 2024: THE WORLD’S LARGEST ENERGY EVENT From cutting-edge technology to decarbonisation, this year’s event will showcase the industry’s biggest innovations and host world leaders as they address critical challenges in the energy transition ADIPEC 2024 is shaping up to be the most influential gathering of energy professionals in the world. From November 4-7, Abu Dhabi will host more than 184,000 attendees, 2,200 exhibitors, and 1,600 speakers, bringing together industry leaders, decision-makers, and innovators from across the energy spectrum. This year, ADIPEC takes on added significance as the sector navigates the twin pressures of meeting global energy demand while advancing decarbonization and digital transformation. As the world’s largest energy event, ADIPEC has grown far beyond its origins as an oil and gas exhibition. Today, it encompasses the entire energy value chain, attracting major national and international oil companies (NOCs and IOCs), government officials, and tech innovators. Its growing emphasis on sustainability and clean energy initiatives reflects the urgency of the global energy transition. The UAE has positioned itself as a leader in clean energy, aiming to achieve 19.8 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030. This ambition is mirrored in the scale and breadth of ADIPEC 2024, where decarbonization will dominate many of the discussions and exhibits. For companies attending ADIPEC, the show isn’t solely an opportunity to showcase new technologies, but about setting the agenda for the future of energy. Global decision-makers will use the event to discuss how they plan to decarbonize their operations, reduce emissions, and implement cleaner energy solutions OAG_Nov2024_30-33_ADIPEC Preview_13417599.indd 3029/10/2024 17:52ADIPEC PREVIEW oilandgasmiddleeast.comNovember 2024 31 without sacrificing profitability or reliability. The energy transition is no longer a distant goal; it is an immediate challenge, and ADIPEC 2024 will provide a platform for companies to share the practical solutions they are deploying to meet this challenge head-on. One of the key areas of focus this year will be decarbonization, particularly in industries that have historically been seen as hard to abate. With the energy sector accounting for a significant share of global greenhouse gas emissions, the pressure is on to find new ways to reduce carbon output. ADIPEC’s Decarbonization Zone will spotlight technologies like carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), which many Industry leaders gather to explore how decarbonization can reshape the global energy landscape 184,000+2,200+54161,600+ attendees expected from across the globe exhibitors showcasing the latest in energy technology national and international oil companies represented exhibition halls featuring digitalization, decarbonization, and maritime sectors speakers across 10 major conferences see as essential for reducing emissions in energy-intensive industries. Beyond CCUS, there will be discussions on the growing role of renewable energy sources, from solar to wind power, and the necessary infrastructure investments required to scale these solutions. In parallel, digital transformation will play a pivotal role at this year’s event. The Digitalization Zone will highlight how emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are revolutionizing the energy sector. The integration of digital tools has already begun to streamline operations, improve safety, and cut costs, but the potential impact is far greater. AI, for instance, is increasingly being used to optimize energy grids, predict maintenance needs, and even automate drilling operations. The digital shift is enabling companies to enhance operational efficiency while making the energy industry more resilient in the face of fluctuating demand and regulatory pressure. Another critical area of focus is the decarbonization of the maritime and logistics sectors. Ports and shipping companies are facing growing pressure to reduce their carbon footprints and comply with stricter emissions standards. ADIPEC aims to be a venue for industry leaders to discuss new fuel technologies, such as green hydrogen and ammonia, which are seen as potential alternatives to conventional maritime fuels. Atrium #A232 OAG_Nov2024_34-37_ADIPEC Exhibitors_13429482.indd 3729/10/2024 13:48BRAND VIEW We are inundated with buzzwords related to the energy transition. ‘Electrification’ is one of the most common, and with good reason. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) estimates that electrification will contribute a full 20% to the global emission reduction needed to reach net zero by 2050. But what does electrification mean? In areas such as transportation and buildings, it means switching to electric vehicles, electric appliances such as stove and water heaters, and heat pumps for space heating and cooling. For industry, electrification means replacing legacy equipment with electric arc furnaces and electric boilers. It also means switching out fossil fuel combustion equipment used to power TURBOCHARGING NETZERO: ELECTRIFICATION IN THE GCC’S OIL & GAS SECTOR Electrification is transforming the Gulf’s oil and gas sector, driving emissions reduction and operational efficiency towards a sustainable net-zero future oilandgasmiddleeast.com38 November 2024 By Ed Torres, Power Conversion Business Leader at GE Vernova OAG_Nov2024_38-40_GE Vernova_13434869.indd 3829/10/2024 20:00BRAND VIEW rotating equipment, such as gas- operated turbines, with electric motors for process technologies such as compressors, blowers and pumps. OPPORTUNITIES TO CUT EMISSIONS In the Middle East, and Gulf region in particular, the oil and gas sector is one of the most consequential industries contemplating electrification. Already, the region’s hydrocarbons have one of the world’s lowest emission intensities for upstream production. Countries are set to drive those down even further. For example, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is planning to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 carbon intensity by 25% by 2030 and reach operational net zero by 2045. ADNOC has defined electrification as one of the key enablers, as the company moves to power more onshore and offshore production facilities with low- carbon nuclear and renewable energy. Saudi Aramco has set a net-zero goal for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050, while Qatar Energy seeks Scope 1 and 2 emission reductions of 25% by 2035 in upstream operations and 35% in LNG operations. One important opportunity for industrial electrification in the sector is LNG liquefaction operations, given the enormous appetite these plants have for power. At GE Vernova, we have extensive experience with “eLNG” retrofitting and greenfield development, and we have seen eLNG solutions deliver emission reductions of 13%- 20%, especially in combination with zero-carbon power or high-efficiency gas power. And the potential is even higher: We have seen LNG and other oil and gas facilities realise significant benefits beyond decarbonisation goals by switching to electric motors with variable speed drive (VSD) systems. The operational benefits of this combination are extensive: • Efficiency: With electric motor and VSD efficiencies above 98%, operating efficiency can be triple that of simple cycle gas turbines. • Speed range: From zero to 105%, compared with thermal options facing a minimum speed of 50%. • Startup and ramp up: Startup takes less than a minute, with a dynamic response capable of going from zero to 100% almost immediately. There is no need for step increases. • Emissions: At the plant site, emissions are zero, versus significant CO₂ and NOx emissions with thermal technologies. • Footprint: Relatively small, compared with large thermal requirements for lube, ventilation, exhaust silencers, etc. • Maintenance: Minimal, with once-yearly periodic inspections, and shutdown required only once every five to six years. Costs also are minimal, with limited spares November 2024 39oilandgasmiddleeast.com OAG_Nov2024_38-40_GE Vernova_13434869.indd 3929/10/2024 20:00Next >
