Faiza Rizvi Rahman Editor INTRODUCTIONPROFILES1213 Since 2016, Dr Al Jaber has served as Group CEO of ADNOC, where he has led a rapid and comprehensive transformation of the company at the direction of the UAE leadership. He has also served two separate terms as the Special Envoy for Climate Change with a clear vision to accelerate the UAE’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Through his work, he has offered a pragmatic approach to the energy transition, calling for realistic, practical, and economical plans to deliver climate progress, energy security, and economic growth at the same time. Dr Al Jaber has always advocated that a successful energy transition must be built on progress with a blend between the economy and climate concerns. He has also led the charge for scientific, economic, and engineering solutions within the ecosystem to create the right formula for the energy transition. Dr Al Jaber has participated in several climate conferences including the historic Paris Agreement signed at COP21 in 2015. In January 2023, he was named the President-Designate of the upcoming 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP28). Following his appointment, Dr Al Jaber has taken up the task to reemphasise the urgency of finding a solution for climate change whilst including different energy mixes to ensure a proper and sustainable energy transition. One of his most important contributions to the field of energy transition is founding Masdar City in 2006. Under his leadership, Masdar quickly became the hub for research and investment in renewable energy, helping the UAE diversify its energy mix. By the end of 2022, the city had already invested in 40 countries across the globe and also expanded in the UAE by bringing in ADNOC, Mubadala, and TAQA as shareholders. Dr Al Jaber has consistently stressed that “everyone” is affected by climate change, which is why it is everyone’s respective responsibility to change the reality. With COP28 taking place between November and December 2023 in the UAE, he is expected to play a vital role in leading a global climate agenda towards a more sustainable world. His tasks will include working with international governments, key stakeholders, and the civil society to create a roadmap that will drive practical solutions for the energy transition. HE DR SULTAN AL JABER Cabinet Member and Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the UAE, President- Designate COP28, Managing Director and Group CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, and the Chairman of Masdar and the United Arab Emirates’ Special Envoy for Climate Change1415 Calling on the need for a credible energy transition plan, Amin Nasser has been a vocal voice in transforming the Saudi giant Aramco into a fully integrated company with a focus on both fossil fuels and clean energy. He has warned, however, that investment in oil and gas is needed alongside new energy investments until the latter can realistically support rising energy consumption. “The [clean energy] opportunities are obvious, given enormous amounts of capital will be required. Up to $275 trillion in cumulative spending by 2050 is needed to achieve net-zero ambitions according to some estimates,” he told the Saudi Capital Markets Forum earlier in 2023. Under his leadership, Aramco has expanded its clean energy production, incorporating technological solutions to achieve net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions across wholly-owned operated assets by 2050. The company is also building one of the world’s biggest hub for carbon capture and storage. Nasser has been actively involved in the company’s innovation and technology strategy by leading its efforts to produce cleaner energy and products through investments in technologies such as next-generation fuel-engine interfaces, crude oil-to-chemicals processes, and renewable energy applications. He has also supported entrepreneurial start-ups focused on cleaner energy solutions and industry-wide efforts to minimise greenhouse gas emissions. Nasser is a member of the International Advisory Board of the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals; the Board of Trustees of the King Abdullah University of Science & Technology; the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council (IBC); the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Presidential CEO Advisory Board; and the JP Morgan International Council. AMIN NASSER President and CEO of Aramco1617 Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh, CEO and Executive Member of the Board at SABIC, is a global leader in the chemical industry. Under his leadership, SABIC has become fully committed to playing a key role in the achievement of Saudi Arabia’s sustainability strategies, including its carbon neutrality ambitions by 2060. Under his leadership, SABIC has successfully overcome many challenges by accelerating its growth programs to achieve record production, sales, and overall revenues. The company has also collaborated with key stakeholders and successfully shipped the world’s first commercial cargo of independently certified blue ammonia to South Korea in November 2022. SABIC has maintained strong capital discipline to enhance both profitability and future growth opportunities. Al- Fageeh has led the company in its efforts to build state-of-the-art information-technology infrastructure, accelerate digital transformation, and effectively tap Big Data tools to become a more data-driven, proactive company. Al-Fageeh has been constantly highlighting the importance of achieving global carbon neutrality within the value chain, and the need for companies to focus on reducing their carbon intensity for long-term economic value. Under his leadership, SABIC has been offering its customers solutions to help accelerate the circular carbon economy, increase energy efficiency, and mitigate their environmental footprints. The company has continued to expand the scope of its sustainable product offering, which includes chemically recycled materials, compounds containing post-consumer and post-industrial recycled content, and renewable bio-based compounds. During his tenure of more than 35 years with SABIC, Al-Fageeh has worked in Project Management, Plant Operations, and Corporate & Business Management. Before assuming his present position as CEO, Al-Fageeh was the Executive Vice President of Petrochemicals, Performance Chemicals, and Polymers strategic business units.
