I think for producers, digitalisation means greater connectivity that ultimately provides a certain number of insights that will improve their productivity and efficiency. That of course creates better yield, better hitting your volume targets, and you always have to be operating safely and sustainably – that’s just the truth of the industry. We see a few key trends that are emerging right now. They’re interesting to focus on from the demands of the last couple of years. Process optimisations for one, especially when you think about AI and advanced analytics, scalable analytics to improve performance, and then there’s this whole area of emissions management, which drops us into sustainability. What future trends are you seeing in terms of digitalisation in the oil and gas industry? I think of some of some of the big customers that are making investments, they really have a stronger digital focus on operations. And they are interested in more integrated solutions. So not buying, for instance, one off purchases for individual software, and then another department buys another and another and another. Integrated solutions are becoming really key. You also can’t just apply a pure AI lens and try to say, ‘we can democratise all of this data,’ you actually need the models that are based on operating technology, which means you don’t just need a bunch of computer scientists, although companies like Honeywell certainly have a lot of them, you also need some chemical engineers thrown in the mix too. This is important going forward. I think we have to remain practical. It’s not all just software and you can throw it at the problem and solve it. We have to have that operating technology lens too. ABOUT THE INTERVIEWEE: Christine Seymour is Senior Director for Strategic Planning at Honeywell 0:01 4:22 FIVE MINUTES WITH... Do you find it’s the need for improved measurements or increased efficiency that’s driving digitalisation? I think that the gathering the data and understanding the data insights and what you’re getting out of your operations is absolutely essential on the sustainability side, because every company is being required to report on their greenhouse gases. So that has to be able to be traced back and auditable – ultimately because it’s reported publicly. And so, if you don’t have that data, and the underlying software and the underlying tools that are doing that analysis and producing that, you’d have no way to go back and account for your claims of greenhouse gas reduction. So that’s paramount from an ESG perspective. Do you think enough is being done to embrace digitalisation as a driver for sustainability? I think that people have been embracing it for a long time. The trends started years ago, but a lot of times people get lost in projects or proof of concepts, they can fall into a chasm and they’re just trying specific projects, and it’s harder for them to scale up and go across entire plants, entire enterprises, entire sites. That’s where a lot of the work is being done today, and I think we’re seeing advancement there. Some of the market leaders that we work with are implementing ways to improve operations everywhere, which also twins with efforts to improve sustainability. Now, they know that big data is no longer really a question, it’s actually the answer of how they can improve. I think that the understanding of new technologies that are coming along, such as technologies that can detect fugitive emissions flaring, are all very important, but how to put it all back together into some kind of system where you have the data and the advanced analytics, and how can you scale up across huge enterprises, to analyse this all? That’s going to be the key going forward. “YOU DON’T JUST NEED A BUNCH OF COMPUTER SCIENTISTS … YOU ALSO NEED SOME CHEMICAL ENGINEERS THROWN IN THE MIX TOO.” Honeywell Oil & Gas Middle East spoke with Christine Seymour on the digitalisation trends that are ongoing in the energy industry and what impact this will have on the drive towards sustainability. 1:37 0:31 THE PREMIER TECHNICAL DOWNSTREAM EVENT IN THE MIDDLE EAST REGISTER NOW SPONSORS & EXHIBITORS ME-TECH, the essential meeting place for the Middle East Downstream industry, returns in-person to Dubai. hosted by metech.europetro.com | events@europetro-me.com | +971 (0)4 421 4642 CONTACT THE ORGANISERS Great event, invaluable topics and sessions shared ADNOC Interesting and exciting event with rich valuable information BAPCO Excellent event focused on key and recent issues, invited excellent pool of presenters talking about current regional megaprojects / programmes that will re-shape the future of the industry regionally and globally.
