< PreviousUAE FOCUS 20 oilandgasmiddleeast.com JANUARY 2021 UAE PLANS FOR GROWTH The UAE appears poised for growth after the pandemic recovery, with new resources discovered, increased sustainability practices and localisation in focus New resources Abu Dhabi has discovered recoverable unconventional oil resources located onshore, estimated at 22 billion stock tank barrels (STB), and an increase in conventional oil reserves of 2 billion STB in the emirate. The 22 billion STB exceeds some of Abu Dhabi’s major fi elds in terms of resources and the production potential ranks alongside the most prolifi c North American shale oil plays. The 2 billion STB of conventional oil reserves increases the UAE’s conventional oil reserves base to 107 billion STB of recoverable oil. The SPC approved ADNOC’s capital expenditure plan of $122 billion (AED 448 billion) for 2021-2025. ADNOC aims to drive over $43.6 billion (AED160 billion) back into the UAE economy in that time. “…The discovery of recoverable unconventional oil resources demonstrates how ADNOC is effi ciently expediting the exploration and development of Abu Dhabi’s unconventional resources and marks a major milestone as the nation’s unconventional industry evolves,” said Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of ADNOC Group. “Importantly, the increase in the UAE’s conventional oil reserves sends a strong signal that ADNOC is leaving no stone unturned in unlocking value from our abundant hydrocarbon resources to ensure the UAE remains a longterm and reliable energy provider to the world for decades to come. Sustainability in focus Corporate sustainability reporting has increased from 44% in 2017 to 51% in 2020 among the top 100 UAE companies. The increase has been driven by a greater commitment to national initiatives and eff orts to gain stakeholder confi dence by proactively communicating ESG performance, according to a study by KPMG. “Challenges posed by Covid-19 have motivated organizations to re-evaluate priorities and pivot to assess their impact on the economy, environment and society,” said James Babb, Partner and IMPACT Champion at KPMG Lower Gulf. “While UAE companies have shown steady progress in implementing corporate responsibility practices and adopting sustainability as a business initiative, there will always be scope for improvement.” Since KPMG’s last survey in 2017, there has been a push for UAE-based companies to disclose their environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance, due in part to the implementation of guidelines such as those released by the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange (ADX) and the Dubai Financial Market (DFM). The UAE government’s commitment UAE FOCUS 21 oilandgasmiddleeast.com JANUARY 2021 country value (ICV) to the UAE to support post-Covid economic growth. As part of this commitment, ADNOC will drive over $43.6 billion (AED160 billion) back into the UAE economy over the next fi ve years as it executes its CAPEX approved by the SPC. “ICV is a powerful mechanism for ensuring more economic value remains in the UAE from the contracts we award. In short, we want to make sure that what we spend here, stays here, and helps stimulate the growth of the private sector and local economy,” Jaber said. Launched in January 2018, the ICV program has driven more than $20.7 billion (AED 76 billion) back into the UAE’s economy and created over 2,000 private- sector job opportunities for Emiratis. Over 4,200 suppliers are certifi ed in the program which has more than 20 certifying bodies. “ICV represents an important element of the new ministry’s strategy that will be rolled out in partnership with the private sector and in coordination with all relevant stakeholders,” Jaber said. “Ultimately, the success of this strategy will depend on the close collaboration and engagement between the public and private sectors. to implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on a national scale is refl ected in the signifi cant increase in companies that have connected their activities to the SDGs in 2020, rising from 37% in 2017 to 49% in 2020. The KPMG report predicts a rise in the number of companies attaining third-party assurance for their sustainability data in the coming years, driven by growing stakeholder concern, as well as the recent ADX and DFM guidelines. Following completion of the transaction, Senaat, which is part of ADQ, and other minority shareholders of NPCC would transfer NPCC to NMDC. “We are pleased to see that the shareholders of NMDC have approved our recommended off er to combine NPCC with NMDC,” said ADQ CIO and Senaat chairman Khalifa Sultan Al Suwaidi. “The transaction will create one of the largest and most diversifi ed engineering, procurement and construction players in the region, and the complementary nature of the businesses provides a strong platform to capture growth opportunities.” NPCC shareholders will transfer the entire issued share capital of NPCC to NMDC. In consideration for the transfer of NPCC, NMDC would issue to NPCC shareholders a convertible instrument, convertible into 575,000,000 ordinary shares in NMDC upon closing of the transaction. The convertible instrument will convert into shares in NMDC is AED 4.40 per share. The deal will create a regional EPC company with a reach into markets across MENA and South Asia. The combined group would have an integrated 2019 revenue of $2.4 billion (AED8.875 billion). Tech investments Almost half of technology leaders, both globally and in the UAE, expect budgets for IT/technology to increase, driven by a surge in spending on operational effi ciencies, customer engagement and data-driven insights. This is among the key fi ndings of The Harvey Nash/KPMG CIO Survey 2020, one of the largest IT leadership surveys in the world, with over 4,200 responses from CIOs and technology executives across 83 countries.UAE FOCUS 23 oilandgasmiddleeast.com JANUARY 2021 compared with 42% of global CIOs. The KPMG study notes this has further led to the emphasis on the critical nature of data and how valuable it is to companies in generating actionable insights. 29% of the UAE’s digital leaders thought they were extremely eff ective in implementing enterprise-wide digital strategies, against the global average of 17%. This is not surprising, given rapid innovation amongst local companies, reinforced by government initiatives. Almost two-thirds of UAE digital leaders stated that the pandemic has likely permanently increased the infl uence of their role. As technology has become increasingly important over the last six to eight months, so has the role of the technology leader. According to 70% of those surveyed by KPMG in the UAE, the pandemic has fostered a culture of inclusivity in technology teams—a full 20% higher than the global average. Wejdi Harzallah, Partner, Head of Digital Strategy at KPMG Lower Gulf, elaborated: “To overcome new challenges, organizations continue to accelerate technology adoption, requiring increased collaboration between the business and technology teams. As many organizations evolve into technology- led companies, we expect to see the future of IT as a connected enterprise that is free of siloes, agile and customer obsessed.” When it comes to talent, UAE technology leaders are seeking enterprise architecture skills above all else (30%), followed by AI expertise (25%). Globally, 35% of the respondents believe that cyber security is the most sought-aft er skill. According to the KPMG study, COVID-19 shift ed employee priorities. While remuneration was valued most pre- pandemic, it was replaced by well-defi ned culture and strong leadership aft er the pandemic. Widespread adoption of remote working practices has benefi ted both employers and employees, opening doors to new opportunities. In the UAE’s competitive IT talent market, digital leaders are prioritizing fl exible working conditions over more traditional perks to retain and attract talent. Farhan Syed, Partner, Head of Advisory at KPMG Lower Gulf, explained: “The coronavirus pandemic disrupted every sector around the world, and has catalyzed digital transformation. While the pandemic may not have necessarily altered business strategies, it has reaffi rmed the importance of data, cloud and cybersecurity. Technology is thus helping businesses to adapt and anticipate better in a volatile business environment.” According to the KPMG study, organizations have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic in diff erent ways. Almost half of UAE respondents expect a slow recovery and are implementing a fl exible, experience-centric technology transformation to emerge stronger from the crisis. The KPMG study notes that UAE digital leaders outperformed their global counterparts when it comes to investing in customer experience and engagement. For UAE businesses, data is the new oil – 63% of CIOs rated data collection as their most successful digital off ering, as Service workshop in Oman The service workshop in Oman is ready for your service.
