Welcome to Düsseldorf!6 oilandgasmiddleeast.com APRIL 2019 EDITOR’S LETTER Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser gave a passion- ate speech at London Petroleum Week, high- lighting what he calls the industry’s “crisis of perception.” Simply put, many consider the hydrocarbon business to be one without a future. To Nasser, there are a few key steps to remedy this: Show that the industry is serious about environmental concerns; that it shares values like transparency with its stakeholders; highlight its in- novative nature to appeal to millenni- als; emphasise facts, like the industry’s participation in global economic growth, over fear; and to connect using stories about people and progress rather than just numbers and data. To an oil and gas journalist like myself, there is one common theme in Nasser’s five key focus areas to repair the indus- try’s image issue: communication. Oil and gas companies need to communicate the work that they are doing to grow, to optimise their operations and to follow environmental regulations. While researching the Power 50 list (p14) for this issue, the Oil & Gas Middle East editorial team pored over moun- tains of data—everything that each com- pany has done since the last Power List. It is impressive. Technical innovations, including the likes of carbon capture technology and new enhanced oil recov- ery techniques (sometimes combined) are making oil and gas companies more efficient and decreasing emissions. Advances in digital technology, increasingly used by oil and gas compa- nies, are helping them spot issues before Yes, the oil and gas industry has an image issue, and NOCs can do more to repair its image. Our “crisis of perception” SUBSCRIBETo subscribe to Oil & Gas Middle East, or other ITP Business titles, go to: www.itp.com/subscriptions. they occur. This means a safer work- place for oil and gas workers, and higher chances of spotting, and fixing, potential safety and environmental concerns. Although these strides may reflect the reality of the oil and gas industry today, they are not always communicated effectively. Stakeholders will not find out about training programs, innovative technologies, sustainability measures and diversity measures by themselves. The world will not hear about these achievements by itself. For the past 10 years, Oil & Gas Mid- dle East has recognised these successes through its annual awards ceremony, co-hosted alongside our sister publica- tion, Refining & Petrochemicals Middle East. But this year, we are taking it a step further with the inclusion of the utilities sector, including renewable and alterna- tive energy, through the participation of yet another sister publication, Utilities Middle East(p34). As oil and gas journalists, watching the sector from the sidelines, we see industry trends and movements, and the region’s growing interest in multilayered energy segment. For energy compa- nies, from upstream to downstream to utilities providers, this is your chance to show what the industry is capable of. Those quiet energy companies keep- ing their heads down and working silently must find their voice—for their own good, and for the industry as a whole. Just as the industry is facing its own internal shifts, the world is chang- ing—it is a louder place than ever before, and now is the time to speak up. THIS ISSUE: We reveal our Power 50 list, ranking the most influential regional oil and gas leaders (p14)OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE, DIGITALLY Sphera has found that industry leaders see digital transformation as a tool to achieve operational excellence, but also see challenges in integrating it into their operations. 90% of industry leaders sur- veyed by Sphera agree digital transformation will accelerate their ability to achieve opera- tional excellence as a sustainable way of doing business. In 2017, only 73% reported the same. Meanwhile, 73% said that operational excellence was the key objective of their digital transforma- tion plans. 55% noted that they aim to reduce operational risk, and 55% listed improved asset availability and uptime as a key focus. While there appears to be a signifi- cant understanding of the importance of digital transformation for operational excellence, obtacles persist: 53% said that their company “is still trying to figure out what digital transformation means to them.” “This is perhaps to be expected when digitalisation and digital transformation can be interpreted in different ways,” Sphera writes in its report. “There can be a disparity of perspectives within an organisation as to what its digital ambitions are – or should be. For some, digitalisation involves tweaking at the edges and automating standard, paper- based processes (the paper-on-glass approach). For others, it’s a far more dis- ruptive force that will impact the entire business and operating model. For many, it is something in between.” Without establishing what digital transformation means to an organisa- tion, or how it can be leveraged to yield results, very few will see the impact of digitalisation. The survey found that only 7% of respondents were securing sustained return on investment from their digital transformation projects. oilandgasmiddleeast.com APRIL 2019 IN NUMBERS 8IT’S ALL ABOUT INSIGHT say technology delivers key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics say technology improves prioritisation and planning say technology delivers predictive analytics that keep assets up and running of survey respondents said that their company is only just starting or is currently implementing digital trans- formation projects believe their company is still trying to figure out what ‘digital transformation’ means to them say technology will create new, insight-driven business processes across various functions say it will connect disparate data as well as separate systems that will create truly actionable insights say digital twins will enable modeling that simulates what-if scenarios for better planning and informed decision-making say technology will provide advanced analytics that will enable them to better understand where to make operational improvements oilandgasmiddleeast.com APRIL 2019 IN NUMBERS 9Next >
