Five minutes with… Osama Shwaihat MANAGING DIRECTOR UAE & ARABIAN GULF, ORANGE BUSINESS SERVICES 1 What is your current role in the ICT industry in the Middle East and what are your responsibilities? In addition to my day-day management role leading the Arabian Gulf team, part of my responsibility is to set the overall strategic direction for my region, developing and executing short and long term business strategies to achieve the organisation’s objectives. This means working closely with the regional sales team to implement our sales plan, and drive new opportunities to win new business. We had a strong 2019 and so the aim now is to sustain and improve upon this solid performance, as part of our 2025 plans. 2 What is the best thing about your job? Orange is all about customers and simplify- ing complexity. ‘Customer- first’ is in our DNA and I love the customer-facing element of my role. There are plenty of opportuni- ties for this, as a service- centric, vendor-agonistic company delivering value added services. This face to face contact with customers gives us the opportunity to develop trust and to build the long-lasting business re- lationships that are essential for success. 3 How innovative do you think the network industry in the Middle East is and how can it improve? The region is undergoing rapid digital trans- formation and the network is also trans- forming. SDN is already largely implement- ed in data centres and in the cloud, leading to faster innovation in the region and greater business agility thanks to virtualisation, automation, and DevOps capabilities. SDN is also a strong enabler for cloud-cloud con- nectivity while global customers are adopt- ing a multi-cloud strategy and regionalising their data to comply with regulatory and GDPR constraints, as well as optimise the availability and performance of their digital services. 4 What are the upcoming trends or products in your sector? Notable shifts and trends in the sector range from network transformation and SDN to Cloud migration, growth in managed services, the need for more security services, and the in- creasing IOT use cases across verticals, from smart cities to healthcare and T&L. In a context of digital transforma- tion, SD-WAN delivers the promise of agile and secure connectivity from end users to applications. 5 What are your out-of- office hobbies? When I’m not immersed in my work, I enjoy the great outdoors and the opportu- nity to connect with nature through horse riding, hiking and diving. Clay target shooting helps my focus and keeps my reflexes sharp! Top 5 What is your favourite film? The Godfather iOS, BlackBerry or Android?
