In addition to automation, KPM has also developed its digital twin capability. Utilising Bentley Systems’ software, the team has created a customised front-end and dashboard that provides live reporting of its office spaces. This technology allows for better understanding and monitoring of space utilisation, energy consumption, and overall operational efficiency. “By using smart technology, we are making informed decisions that improve our operations and reduce our energy consumption and carbon footprint,” says Scott. The digital twin platform enhances KPM’s internal operations and is a powerful tool for client engagement. “We can go to a client and say, ‘This is what we can do; here’s the benefit’,” he notes. As the MEP industry in the Middle East evolves, the demand for innovative and comprehensive engineering solutions has never been greater. Leading the charge in this dynamic landscape is KPM, a firm that has established itself as a comprehensive engineering consultancy with a broad range of services and expertise in the region. Recently recognised in MEP Middle East’s Top 30 Consultants list, we sat down with Colin Scott, the multidisciplinary consultancy’s Director of MEP, to learn more about the future of building services in the region and the company’s innovative approach to design. Scott brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to KPM’s strategic initiatives. “The managing partners, Kashif Fakih and Mitesh Bavdekar, have a strategic vision for the business. The role I stepped into allowed me to develop the MEP side in ways that align with the goals and objectives of building services needed in the region today, which excites me,” he explains. Scott’s decade-long experience working in the region ensures he stays attuned to emerging trends and technologies, a critical factor in leading effective teams. “When you’re leading teams, you need to be well aware of the emerging trends and technologies and how we should be moving things from a technical perspective,” he asserts. DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION In the MEP industry, digital transformation is becoming essential, driven by advancements in automation and digital twin technology. In line with this, Scott reveals that KPM has made a strategic decision and invested in developing an in-house automation team focused on embracing digitalisation to improve workflows, automate processes, and ultimately enhance efficiency and quality of delivery. “They implement the latest trends and ideas to unleash the true capability of the software available. More importantly, they listen to our people, understand their pain points and improvement suggestions, and develop KPM-specific scripts and plugins. Industry leaders are setting new benchmarks, integrating sustainable practices into every phase of their projects. Moreover, integrating sustainable solutions within MEP systems not only reduces carbon footprint and energy consumption but also enhances building efficiency and longevity. For KPM, this emphasis on sustainability is a core principle of their practice. “If you’re a considerate consultant, it’s automatically embedded in your work. We ensure everyone knows that we design with sustainability in mind,” Scott states, noting that many of KPM’s projects have specific sustainability objectives driven by client requirements or certifications like LEED. However, KPM goes beyond minimum sustainability requirements, adding value through energy modelling and optimised design solutions. “We don’t just meet the basics; we enhance our designs from the outset,” Scott explains. Their comprehensive approach integrates sustainability into every project stage, backed by engineering practices for low-energy design. “To lead in sustainability, we must continually evolve and pioneer engineering changes,” he emphasises. Continuing, Scott cites their recent work on the Elaf Taiba Hotel project in Medina, Saudi Arabia. He explains, “Tasked with refurbishing this 30-year-old hotel, we commenced with a comprehensive MEP KPM’s methodology to building revitalisation and rejuvenation projects “ We have developed a methodology and approach to building revitalisation that can be tailored to suit our clients’ pain points or the specific objectives they need to address on rejuvenation projects” services condition survey, followed by collaboration with the client’s facilities management team to establish replacements and maintenance schedules. “The project aimed to optimise the hotel’s performance while minimising its ecological footprint. We developed simulation models and conducted dynamic simulations to analyse and optimise energy usage. Despite constraints posed by the existing building’s limitations and project budgets, the team meticulously identified areas for enhancement and optimisation, resulting in impressive energy savings of up to 17%.” “Furthermore, we have developed a methodology and approach to building revitalisation that can be tailored to suit our clients’ pain points or the specific objectives they need to address on rejuvenation projects,” Scott asserts. ELEVATING URBAN DESIGN KPM is also increasingly involved in designing high and super-high-rise buildings, a sector experiencing significant growth due to urbanisation and the need for efficient land use in densely populated areas. The demand for these structures necessitates advanced engineering solutions to address unique challenges such as structural integrity, vertical transportation, energy efficiency, and sustainability. Here, Scott highlights his expertise and understanding of the challenges, sharing insights from his experiences. “One notable project is the SLS Tower in Dubai, a 330-metre tall structure with a The Elaf Taiba Hotel project in Medina, Saudi ArabiaNext >
