A step inside reveals some of the Kingdom’s biggest names: Ahmed Mater, Abdulnasser Gharem, Larissa Sansour, Timo Nasseri and many, many more. There’s an inviting ambience that one feels immediately as they enter – it’s as if the artworks themselves greet guests. “It all started when I began collecting art,” says Mohammed. “I kept buying and buying and never had the opportunity to live with the art that I bought in my previous houses for different reasons.” He and his wife Lulu then decided to move into the house, where they are now, a few years ago. “We hired an interior designer, Nawaf Nassar of 3N Jeddah who worked closely with Lulu. When you design a house you always go through a few minor arguments,” he laughs. “Our most relevant one was the design of the walls and Lulu was quite keen on having wall panelling and I kept telling her that we need to keep them as white as possible because all of our artwork will go on the walls.” It was all about the art. Lulu and the designer kept lobbying for designs and Mohammed would refuse. He got his way. While the home was a family home, it was also a space for Mohammed’s contemporary art. “The design of a house refl ects your way of life,” continues Mohammed. “We wanted something comfortable for our lifestyle while also keeping the existing structure with some extensions for the space we dreamed of.” There’s an artwork for nearly every inch of the home. “I wasn’t aware of the quantity of artwork that we had in storage,” says Lulu. “It took three months to hang all of the artwork in the house. It was education for me and an experience – some of the artworks took three hours to hang.” At one point, the couple لﲋﻣ ﰲ ﺔﺸﻴﻌﳌا ﺔﻓﺮﻏ ﺮﻈﻨﻣ ﲆﻋ ﺮﻬﻈﻳو ،ﻆﻓﺎﺣ ﺪﻤﺤﻣ ﻦﻣ ﲏﻓ ﻞﻤﻌﻟ ﻮﻳﺪﻴﻓ ﺔﺷﺎﺸﻟا .ﱐﺎﺗرﻮﻋ ﺔﻧاد A view of Mohammed’s living space with a video still by Dana Awartani on the TV screen HBSA_002_208to213_AFL_hafiz_11670166.indd 21104/07/2021 04:22:48 PM212 Harper’s Bazaar Saudi Summer 2021 ﻚﺗﺎﻴﺣ ﺮﻃﺎﻣ ﺪﻤﺣأو ﱰﻨﻋ دﺎﻳﺰﻟ ﺔﻴﻨﻓ لماﻋأ ةيرﻣﻷا ﻮﻤﺴﻟا ﺔﺒﺣﺎﺻو ةداﺮﺑ ﻮﻄﻳو ﺔﻳآ ﱃإ ﺔﻓﺎﺿإ ،دﻮﻌﺳ ﺖﻨﺑ ةﺮﻫﻮﺠﻟا جﺎﺠﺣ ﻦﺴﺣو رﺪﻴﺣ ،ﺔــﻠﻣﺎﻛ ﺮﻬــﺷأ ﺔــﺛﻼﺛ لﺰــﻨﳌا ﰲ تﺎــﺣﻮﻠﻟا ﻊــﻴﻤﺟ ﻖــﻴﻠﻌﺗ ﻲــﻨﻣ قﺮﻐﺘــﺳا . ًاﺪــﺟ .“ﺔــﻠﻴﻤﺠﻟا تﺎــﻳﺮﻛﺬﻟا ﻚــﻠﺗ ﱃإ ًﺎــئماد ﺎــﻧﺪﻴﻌﺗ ﺎــﻫرﺎﺒﺘﻋﺎﺑ even had to rent a crane to install Ahmed Mater’s Magnetism (2011). It didn’t fi t through any doors. But they managed and now the artwork, a contemporary response in black and white to the idea of Hajj, is situated proudly in one of the principle rooms for all to admire. “The family TV room is where we spend the most time,” says Lulu. “For the fi rst year of being here we didn’t install WiFi or TV in the children’s rooms so they automatically spent more time in the TV room with us which was wonderful.” But once the WiFi was installed in their bedrooms they disappeared on Lulu and Mohammed. A big grey couch can be found in the central living space. Behind it are works by Hassan Hajjaj, Ayman Yossri, Yto Barrada, Hazem Harb, Aya Haidar, Batool AlShumrani, and Ziad Antar. The coffee table in front carries a wide variety of luxury lifestyle tomes and art books. This is artful living at its best. “We didn’t buy many new design pieces – they came from our previous homes and from our parents,” says Lulu. There’s lighting by Achille Castiglioni, lamps from FLOS, furniture by Antonio Citterio, a small table by BrickLab and the rest is largely mid- century designer furniture. “The designer just did the space distribution and he helped us choose how to layout the fl oor and everything else we did together,” says Mohammed. It’s hard not to be captivated by the light that emanates into each room, bouncing off each framed artwork and providing warmth to the home so that it glistens like a gem. The couple rotate the artwork too so that the home at times turns into its own gallery space. “That’s the idea,” says Lulu. “To soon offer private art viewings at home.” And then there’s the terrace with expansive views onto the city of Jeddah. “When it’s cooler, we entertain guests indoor and outdoors,” says Lulu. The house, while still new, is fi lled with stories. “As a collector, the way I always bought the work, especially the ones that qualifi ed to be hung in the house have a very special story and connection behind them,” says Mohammed. “Each work is connected to me in some way, representing a special moment of my life. I look at the art every day and they bring back the most wonderful memories. I’ve been buying since I was 16 years old and now in my forties, each piece brings back memories from my life.” The furniture also carries with it special memories. “One of my favourite pieces is a desk that my father had since he was 13 years old,” he adds. “Each part of the house is important to me and connected to my life in some way – even the books. When you live in a house the most important thing that you have is the connection with the objects that are in the space. A creamy beige is the reigning hue inside, with hints of gold throughout the space. The regal property has been designed by the founder of Saudi-based interior studio, A Interiors, Her Royal Highness Princess Anoud Khalid Mishaal bin Saud, over the course of two years with the aim of making it a comfortable and entertainment-friendly home. “It’s one of my favourite projects because I had full design freedom and fl exibility,” Princess Anoud tells Bazaar Saudi. “I wanted to create something that was comfortable but at the same time, looked really good and had an Arabesque feel to it.” Enabling free expression through design and authenticity is a philosophy Her Highness knows too well, and is the driving force behind A Interiors. “Don’t try to imitate or look at what other designers are doing,” she urges. “Ask yourself, what makes you comfortable? What makes you happy? Because if it makes you happy, it’s probably going to make your clients happy too.” Often visiting furniture shops and fl ea markets in the Kingdom and beyond during much of her childhood, Princess Anoud was well aware of her passion for interior design from an early age. After her fi rst freelance project, it was clear that she needed to launch her own fi rm. “I just didn’t want to do freelancing projects anymore and then the idea of A Interiors was born,” she smiles. Marrying her love for global travel and art, A Interiors is constantly evolving, merging traditional elements with modern minimalism and applying an open-minded approach to every project. “My favourite projects are the ones where the client gives me full fl exibility and trust,” she says. “And with this home in Riyadh, I had the ability to be very creative.” Geometric designs recalling traditional Islamic calligraphy fi ll the home in the form of artworks, design sculptures and even shapes on doors, cupboards and ceilings, welcoming beautiful daylight patterns to fall on the sofas and fl ooring. The furniture has been manufactured by a family-owned business in Greece called Karageorgiou Interiors, chosen for embracing the same design values as A Interiors. Small antiques collected from vintage dealers during Princess Anoud’s travels have inspired each room’s aesthetic. “I fi nd things that are really special,” she says. “Then I start styling with those pieces in mind and it just grows from there. These travel pieces were the main inspiration for each room and everything just fell into place.” She laughs, “And I have attachment issues with all these pieces.” A nod to the homeowner’s affi nity with the art world and co-curated by Saudi art advisor Raneem Farsi, large-scale works by Korean artist Cha Seung hang on several walls. “I gave Raneem photos of the rooms and she sent me different options, so we selected the artworks together,” says Princess Anoud. “She’s really amazing and a good friend.” The designer’s love for vintage style stems from fond memories of collecting items with her mother during travels abroad. “I was very infl uenced by my mother – she loves antique and vintage items,” she shares. “And it’s something we always used to do together as an activity. In saying that, I don’t have a certain style or an era that I’m attached to. It’s all about the connection with a piece that I simply feel really attracted to.” Beyond its impressive designs and subtle-luxury ethos, perhaps it’s the meditative ambience that makes this space truly extraordinary. The warm, muted base palette of the home exudes a tranquil energy which fi lls the entire space, and pops of colour inject a distinct mood into each room. “Throughout the entire home, I didn’t want to have too many fi nishes or make it too busy,” says Princess Anoud. “So we kept a unifying colour and then in certain spaces, we added some touches to give each space its own character.” Her personal favourite area is a living room downstairs, rich in textural layers and design. “I really like this room because it’s so eclectic. Each piece is completely different than the other and refl ects a completely different style.” While the abode has a personality of its own, the aura of the homeowner can be sensed even without their presence. “As a designer, no matter what you do, it’s not the same until someone actually moves in,” expresses Her Highness. “I think it’s their energy. I don’t know how to explain it, but you feel like the house has a new life. I think having accessories and plants always give the space a homey feel, but what makes a home warm is the people that are in the space and what they bring.” ainteriors.com ﻦﻣ ﻲﺗﺄﻳ ﻲﻘﻴﻘﺤﻟا ءفﺪﻟا” ﻪﻧﻮﻣﺪﻘﻳ ﺎﻣو صﺎﺨﺷﻷا .“ﺔﺣﺎﺴﻣ ﻞﻛ ءاﺮﺛﻹ دﻮﻨﻌﻟا ﻮﻤﺴﻟا ﺔﺒﺣﺎﺻ دﻮﻌﺳ ﻦﺑ ﻞﻌﺸﻣ ﺪﻟﺎﺧ The downstairs living room ﰲ ﺔﺸﻴﻌﳌا ﺔﻓﺮﻐﻟ ةرﻮﺻ ﲇﻔﺴﻟا ﻖﺑﺎﻄﻟا Her Royal Highness Princess Anoud Khalid Mishaal bin Saud downstairs; Below: a view of the elegant dining room bathed in natural light ﺖﻨﺑ دﻮﻨﻌﻟا ةيرﻣﻷا كيﻠﳌا ﻮﻤﺴﻟا ﺔﺒﺣﺎﺻ ﻖﺑﺎﻄﻟا ﰲ دﻮﻌﺳ ﻦﺑ ﻞﻌﺸﻣ ﻦﺑ ﺪﻟﺎﺧ ﺔﻘﻴﻧﻷا مﺎﻌﻄﻟا ﺔﻓﺮﻐﻟ ةرﻮﺻ :هﺎﻧدأ .ﲇﻔﺴﻟا ﺔﻴﻌﻴﺒﻄﻟا ةءﺎﺿﻹﺎﺑ ةءﺎﻀﳌا HBSA_002_214to221_AFL_HH Anoud_11670829.indd 21904/07/2021 01:19:13 PMNext >
