Growing buyer interest, investment potential, and a demand for rare, in-demand pieces has seen the industry go from strength to strength. Th e market isn’t, however, without its challenges. A paucity of regulation has led to a lack of trust. Cue Ninety, the offi cial retailer of pre-owned Richard Mille watches in Europe and the Middle East with dedicated boutiques in Geneva and London. “I’d hear these horror stories about murky dealings and people being duped,” says Tilly Harrison, Director of Ninety and Managing Director of Richard Mille Middle East. “I wanted to give people the opportunity to buy rare and exclusive timepieces in a safe, luxury environment.” Th e Mayfair boutique, known as Ninety Mount Street, occupies the same location as Richard Mille’s fi rst boutique in the capital, so that it is very much part of the Richard Mille family. “It’s a beautiful space where clients can join us for a tea or coff ee, speak to a watchmaker, and fi nd exclusive pieces in immaculate condition.” Th at type of experience comes with all the luxuries one expects of Richard Mille — skilled in-house watchmakers, trained at the eponymous Manufacture, rigorous quality “I T ’ S A N OPP O R T UNIT Y T O T O B U Y R A R E A N D EX C L U S I V E TI M E P I E C E S I N A S A F E , L U X U R Y EN V I R O N M EN T ” controls through servicing, repairs, or refurbishments, and a warranty. “Only a Richard Mille watchmaker can service a Richard Mille timepiece,” says Tilly. “We have one of the longest standing watchmakers from the brand with us at Ninety. He has been with Richard Mille for over fourteen years and is highly experienced in servicing and restoration. He can see immediately if a watch has been serviced by a non-Richard Mille watchmaker and assess the damage.” Th at level of expertise and trust has seen Ninety cultivate a global clientele, including many Middle Eastern collectors. Th e retailer will showcase a range of exceptional timepieces for men and women at the Doha Jewellery and Watch Exhibition, demonstrating just how signifi cant the pre- owned market has become. “Richard Mille often has very limited editions, meaning that even our best clients don’t always get the opportunity to buy these pieces through the boutiques,” says Tilly. “We receive many requests for rare pieces and historical pieces.” From the RM 19-02 Purple ‘Fleur’, a sophisticated three dimensional work of art limited to only 30 pieces worldwide; to the RM 07-01 Intergalactic ‘Bright Night’; the RM 053 Pablo Mac Donough, created in conjunction with one of the worlds greatest Polo players and limited to only 15 pieces worldwide; and the RM 018 ‘Lapis & Malachite’ Tourbillon, an extremely limited and very special timepiece created in conjunction with the Boucheron jewellery house to celebrate its 150th anniversary, Ninety boasts some of the most covetable timepieces on the market; a beautifully curated selection of which will make their way to the Doha Exhibition. “Some of our best clients at Ninety are Middle Eastern and when we opened in London they would come specifi cally to see pieces that we stock. I’m really looking forward to seeing our clients again in Doha and to show them our exceptional pieces.” IMAGES: SUPPLIED HBQ_034_102-103_News_Richard Mille Ninety_13148276.indd 10329/01/2024 21:28104 Harper’s Bazaar Qatar Spring 2024 The BEAUTY With the collagen industry expected to exceed QR128 billion by 2026 (According to Global Market Insights), chances are you’ve been at least tempted to test out its promises of thicker hair, stronger nails, sturdier joints and glossier skin. “Th e word collagen has become synonymous with beauty health”, says pharmacist and cosmetics entrepreneur Pupinder Ghatora. “But despite the rush, there is still a limited understanding of the role that collagen plays in the body and slowing down the aging process.” So, should we be jumping on the bandwagon? Th e most abundant protein in the body, collagen is a fi bre-like structure found in the connective tissue in skin, tendons, bone and joints, helping to keep them healthy, hydrated and strong, our bodies make it naturally from amino acids obtained in our diet; however, levels drop by about 1.5 per cent every year after the age of 20, totalling a 30 per cent loss by the time we reach our forties. As such, collagen supplementation makes for a convincing anti-aging argument, particularly as there’s some evidence to suggest the practice may benefi t skin and joint health. “I know a number of plastic surgeons who prescribe oral collagen to their patients around the time of cosmetic surgery, with the aim of speeding up wound healing and minimizing scarring,” notes Dr Dev Patel, a cosmetic doctor and the founder of the skincare brand CellDerma. Part of the challenge in making sense of the industry is the sheer number of brands competing for our attention. “Th e choice for the consumer is dizzying, with diff ering doses, formats and product messaging, ” says Pupinder. To complicate things further, collagen products are labelled as food supplements rather than drugs, putting FOR EVER YOUNG Our bodies produce collagen in abundance, but it’s not long before levels of this hardworking protein start to drop. Can the latest range of wonder products really restore them? Words by KATE YOUNG us at the mercy of a market vulnerable to bogus beauty claims – or “faux science,” as Pupinder calls it. Th en there are brands that prefer to pay for celebrity endorsement rather than invest in lab-based trials; so, never take a supplement at (famous) face value. “If a product does not have its own data, the consumer should be quite wary,” says Pupinder, who advises choosing supplements with clinically proven formulations. Th is is especially important since collagen is a notoriously tricky molecule for the body to absorb unless capsulated; most of the active product in collagen-based drinks, tablets and shots will be destroyed by stomach acid before it can enter the bloodstream, meaning that, at best, the bulk of your money will be expelled as waste. “At worst, many formulations contain anti- nutrients as they are unstable by nature, so they need preservatives and fl avour-masking chemicals, none of which will benefi t the body or skin,” adds Pupinder. Unless a collagen brand can prove its results, it’s unlikely it ever had any, even relying on skincare to boost collagen levels comes with complications. As a long chain protein, collagen is too big and not stable enough to penetrate the skin. “We use collagen in our products purely as a second protective skin barrier. We don’t, and wouldn’t ever, expect it to absorb like a retinol or vitamin C,” explains QMS Medicosmetics’ Rowan Hall-Farrise. In a topical cream, “look for ingredients that stimulate collagen production, such as peptides and amino acids. Th e idea that you could add collagen to the skin by adding it to your formula is misleading,” says Stephen de Heinrich, co-owner of Omorovicza. While there are eff ective ways to encourage collagen production, identifying them requires knowledge on the part of the consumer. It pays to do your homework. PHOTOGRAPHY BY FERNANDO GOMEZ.
