< PreviousEX T E N S I O N OF HOM E Architecture and design agency Amphora’s new Dubai offi ce is styled to enhance productivity and comfort, with femininity, collaboration and empowerment at its core Architecture and design-focused marketing consultancy Amphora has just opened the doors to its offi ce in Dubai’s bustling Sheikh Zayed Road. Designed to feel like home, the space is the vision of Amphora’s Founder Miriam Llano, brought to life by Portuguese designer Frederico Cruz – Miriam’s better half and Design Director at one of the world’s leading developers and operators of luxury hospitality properties. Here, Frederico walks us through the design process, challenges and inspirations. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE DESIGN? An extension of your own home. It is an intimate, calm and neutral space that immediately puts everyone at ease the minute they walk through the door. Classical design elements give it a sense of familiarity and makes you identify with the space. Th ere are no eccentric accents. It is simple without being minimalistic. It is an interplay of lines, softness, texture and materials. THE INTERIOR DESIGN HAS A STRONG EUROPEAN FLAIR; A CROSS BETWEEN A PARISIAN APARTMENT AND CONTEMPORARY HOTEL. WHAT WERE YOUR MAIN INSPIRATIONS? Th e interior design carries a signature of Miriam’s roots, her own style, personality and inspirations which are classical and European. For the zoning, I began by identifying the location for the offi ce – the prime space near the window, diagonally opposite the main door, where she can overlook everything. Th e rest of the offi ce is built with a strong Swathed in tones of walnut, honey and oak, Amphora’s offi ce exudes a warm comfort where creativity and productivity thrive HBI_060_40-41_Latest_Amphora office_13194338.indd 4019/03/2024 13:16 The XXXXX 41 HarpersBazaarArabia.com/Culture/Interiors Spring 2024 From top: Clean, strong lines defi ne the space with bold energy while the colour palette softens and cocoons; A fl ow of balance reigns supreme while the styling pieces infuse personality; Couple Miriam Llano and Frederico Cruz at the newly designed Amphora offi ce in Dubai connection to this space. Collaboration is the cornerstone of Amphora and I was conscious about creating a space that fosters this value. WHAT WERE THE MAIN CHALLENGES AND HOW DID YOU RESOLVE THEM? Time! From design to handover, it was a very tight two and a half months. We also struggled with getting the right contractor on board for the project. Th ings changed when Amphora client WalkTh ru Contracting took over the entire fi t-out. Th eir professionalism, impeccable attention to detail, quality of work and a reliable team, always ready with solutions to get the best results – made this happen in record time indeed. After the offi ce was furnished, we were challenged with how we would style the space. We did not want to go with standard off -the-shelf accessories and art. Instead, we brought back collectibles from our family homes – precious pieces that were passed on or bought during travels. Th is is what lends the space that special character. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE FEATURE? I had lots of fun designing Miriam’s desk. It is a statement piece that stands out from the rest of the offi ce. It is solid, yet delicate and speaks of feminine power. I personally think it is an element that pleases you no matter what mood you are in. As soon as you enter the offi ce, you immediately understand that this is where big decisions are made. Th e oversized Vibia lighting right above the desk further dramatises it. Despite its proportions, it is very comfortable and practical, fi tted with power outlets, hooks for bags and hidden cables to maintain sleekness. ON A PERSONAL NOTE, HOW EASY OR DIFFICULT IS IT TO DESIGN WHEN YOUR CLIENT HAPPENS TO BE FAMILY? Th ere are pros and cons. Mixing business with family is always very delicate because you don’t want to fail the person. No matter how busy you are, you can also never show that they are not your priority. It was not easy to juggle the heavy burden of my full-time job with this project, especially given the tight timeframe within which I was to build Miriam’s dream offi ce. Miriam is very hands-on. She fi lters every single decision, big and small. It took me a while to learn to take feedback from her in a professional manner without getting emotional about it. And on her part, she began to appreciate my expertise, my inspirations and the way I work from idea to execution. Th at really built trust in my decisions. As a couple, we grew a lot. It was tricky in the beginning, half way through it became interesting and, in the end, really satisfying. Now when I hear her say how much she loves the offi ce, all the challenges we went through seem worth it. beamphora.com AS TOLD TO A YESHA SHEHMIR, IMAGES COUR TESY OF AMPHORA HBI_060_40-41_Latest_Amphora office_13194338.indd 4119/03/2024 13:17WORDS BY A YESHA SHEHMIR, IMAGES COUR TESY OF EAR THY LIVING CU L T U R A L RE V I V A L Delicate patterns and vibrant palettes come together in Earthy Living’s consciously curated pieces for the home, evoking the rich spirit of Jaipur From the forests of Chhattisgarh to the vibrant streets of Jaipur, Earthy Living was born from stories passed down through generations. As the demand for the same quality textiles in homes became apparent, the Dubai and Barcelona-based brand branched out to residential customers; a venture that makes it possible to experience hotel luxury from the comfort of your own home. “Enso Timeless holds a deeply personal signifi cance for me, rooted in my upbringing in Dubai, the very place where the brand was born,” shares co-founder, Tania Nishat-Botero. “I think we are at a time where we want to support and celebrate brands emerging from the region. To me, Enso Timeless has the potential to become a reference from our region of sustainable luxury for the home.” In Japanese aesthetics, Ensō, the circle, is a symbol of strength, clarity and elegance. ‘Timeless’ represents an ever-present, simple feeling of pleasure that exists at home. Th ese two concepts are intertwined and felt in the richness of the fabrics. “Prior to launching our retail brand, I was using custom-made Enso Timeless bedding and bath towels at home, as our hospitality division, started by my father, was creating bed and bath linen for luxury hotels in the UAE. We would have some at home too and I truly would not choose any other product for myself,” Tania reminisces. “I’m also infl uenced by the attention and detail my mother put into decorating every corner of our home growing up – especially ensuring my bedroom represented me. Now, Enso Timeless allows me to continue that legacy by curating spaces that refl ect individuality.” Hannah Nishat-Botero, Tania’s sister and the brand’s co-founder adds: “As a family business born in Dubai, we are moved by what the region needs and wants; we are shaped by its colours and textures, and inspired by its pace. We hope to join the movement that is turning towards choosing homegrown brands, and to inspire the practice of mindfulness as a pillar of the interior design process. We aspire to infl uence care and attention being placed into each object decorating our everyday – from the stitch to the softness of the textile – in order to eschew fl eeting trends and embrace timeless elements which harmonise with our environment, while adding beauty, elegance and comfort.” ensotimeless.com WORDS BY A YESHA SHEHMIR, IMAGES COUR TESY OF ENSO TIMELESS HBI_060_46-47_Latest Enso_13194340.indd 4621/03/2024 12:49Clockwise from top: For a rustic aesthetic appeal, Enso’s placemats in charcoal add a contrasting pop; The Roble duvet cover in taupe combines Egyptian combed cotton and a sateen weave; The Nube bathrobe sporting a velour waffl e design 47 HarpersBazaarArabia.com/Culture/Interiors Spring 2024 HBI_060_46-47_Latest Enso_13194340.indd 4719/03/2024 13:30The antique rounded platter emanates vivid character through a rough textural surface HBI_060_48-49_Latest_ Van Oliver_13180477.indd 4819/03/2024 13:31WORDS BY ODELIA MA THEWS, IMAGES COUR TESY OF STUDIO V AN OLIVER AND BOUND NO.82 BA R E B E A U TY Celebrating natural imperfections, Studio Van Oliver and Bound No.82’s new collection evokes a sense of home What I love the most is being able to give people spaces that feel like a big hug for the soul,” says Becki Willis, Director of Dubai-based interior design fi rm, Studio Van Oliver. “In a region where opulence and luxury surround us, I think our work brings a more humble type of luxury.” And it’s evident in the latest twelve-piece collection created in collaboration with Abu Dhabi-based homeware brand, Bound No.82.
