SHEHMIR EDITOR @AYESHASOHAIL_ Below: Dreamscapes & Artifi cial Architecture: Imagined Interior Design In Digital Art. 2020. gestalten scillating between a beautiful balance of fantasy and reality, The Escape Issue is an intimate celebration of avant-garde, whimsical designs which, the rise of the digital architecture movement perpetually paves the way for. The cover is graced by a work by Massimo Colonna, a Scandiano-born digital artist interested in minimal, ethereal sceneries which evoke hints of nostalgia. The purple masterpiece was fi rst featured in Dreamscapes & Artifi cial Architecture: Imagined Interior Design in Digital Art (Surreal Territory, p. 40), a riveting tome published by gestalten in 2020 which comprises fanciful buildings, surrealist urban landscapes and abstract compositions that (sadly!) can’t, and won’t ever be made, conceptualised by artists around the world such as Filip Hodas and Ezequiel Pini. The dreamscapes – fl oating objects, pastel skies and otherworldly rooms – are liberated from the restrictions of the physical realm, inviting the reader into an imaginarium of free-fl owing interior design and architecture possibilities. True to this philosophy of limitless ideas, the forthcoming pages are a compilation of colourful looks apt for escaping at home (Invite The Outdoors In, p. 52) and styling surrealism-inspired spaces such as author Neha Hiranandani’s penthouse which references the late Belgian artist René Magritte (Up In The Clouds, p. 98), who once famously said, “If the dream is a translation of waking life, waking life is also a translation of the dream.” Elsewhere, we enter a palatial residence designed by Dubai-based Kart Group which has merged principles of feng shui with opulence (Wind & Water, p. 86); A grand villa in Emirates Hills by XBD Collective (Neutral Haven, p. 64); The Arts Club Dubai’s Art Deco-infl uenced aesthetic by Dimorestudio (Vintage Charm, p. 94); Musician-turned-architect Carl Gerges’ project in the Bhamdoun village in Lebanon (Mountain Retreat, p. 74), built as an extension of its hilly surroundings; Meet fi ve trailblazing women to watch in the design scene in the Middle East (Designers To Watch, p. 58) and so, so much more. Step into the distinctive, utopian, escapist and fantastical concepts that are birthing a fresh future of design – one that is brilliantly bizarre, a nod to nature and a bold expression of our times. Read, dream, imagine. Escape with us.
