Leading the change is Dr. Barbara Paldus, the force behind Codex Beauty... Prior to launching Codex Beauty, Dr. Barbara Paldus spent two decades leading innovation in spectroscopy, biotechnology and telecommunications. By age 34, she had founded two Silicon Valley companies – Picarro and Finesse Solutions – that, among many breakthroughs, paved the way for carbon cycle/natural gas pipeline monitoring, and accessible vaccine and cancer therapeutic manufacturing. Today, two of the COVID-19 vaccines are actually manufactured in equipment that Dr. Barbara developed. And so, it is fair to say that entrepreneurship runs through the Canadian CEO’s veins – something she has proven since graduating from Stanford University. Upon discovering her son had a severe allergy to certain ingredients contained within baby products, Dr. Barbara began questioning and challenging the claims that personal care products were making and embarked on a venture into the beauty industry. The result? Codex Beauty was born. Here, Dr. Barbara shares a sneak peek into her brilliant mind while giving us a quick science lesson, and sharing what brides-to-be should be doing in the run-up to their big-day. Notepads at the ready… Tell us about the inspiration behind your brand? I decided that the beauty industry needed greater transparency, as well as quantitative benchmarks for product performance. Being an engineer, I want to create solutions that work. My goal is not to make money by selling a lifestyle or guesswork. My goal is to address skin issues, while supporting minimalist routines that reduce garbage and carbon footprints. Each of our collections address a specifi c need, such as hydration (Bia) and infl ammation (Antü). What does Codex Beauty represent? It represents the ability to make 82 HarpersBazaarArabia.com Bride Spring / Summer 2021 HBBR_019_082to083_Beauty_11663240.indd 8227/04/2021 12:41:46 PM The BEAUTY INTER VIEW & WORDS: NINA CA TT . MAIN IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK. CODEX BEAUTY IS A VAILABLE A T W ATSONS.AE educated choices based on science and data. It has the ability to minimise purchases and the time spent on regimes every morning and evening, while maximising results. It is about not hurting microbiomes because the products have been tested and certifi ed to support it. It is about benefi ting from modern plant-based biotechnology to access clinically proven products that help preserve the earth. Codex Beauty, named after ancient books of science and medicine, brings transparency and sustainability to fundamentally change beauty, as well as to educate and empower the consumer. That’s great. Tell us, how should brides-to-be prepare for their wedding so that skin is healthy and glowing? A consistent treatment and product regimen should occur between two-to-six months prior to the big day. The coveted ‘glow’ is affected by overall health, pollution, diet, sleep, and hormonal changes. Exfoliating regularly, a simple daily skincare regime, and leading a healthy lifestyle are the best ways to keep skin smooth and radiant. The ‘glowing’ look means that the skin surface is smooth and refl ects light. It also means that the skin tone is even. On the other hand, dull skin is rough and diffuses light. What are the biggest concerns that brides have, and what can they do to help improve them? All brides want beautiful, clear, luminous skin. They don’t want acne, eczema or any sort of redness. We recommend including fruits and green vegetables in the diet to keep skin hydrated. Avoid spicy and fatty food, tea, coffee and cigarettes. Drink a minimum of two-to-four litres of water every day. Partake in regular cardiovascular exercise, and indulge in steam rooms or saunas to help sweat out toxins. Also, lots of sleep will help reduce stress and cortisol levels. Most importantly, in addition to a simple, regular routine, a carefully planned set of facial treatments that do the harshest procedure as early as possible, and become more and more gentle closer to the wedding. A fi nal ‘fi nishing’ facial a few days before the big day will have brides looking their very best. What should brides avoid prior to their wedding day? We do not recommend having drastic cosmetic procedures close to a wedding. It can take time to recover from an injection, micro-needling, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, or laser resurfacing. Those procedures should be done four- to-six months prior to the wedding. We recommend using simple and gentle products in the skincare routine to avoid new acne or infl ammation fl are-ups. Strong vitamin C products, kojic acid, retinols, AHAs, or harsh exfoliators (with a lot of salicylic acid) can lead to skin irritation if used too often. Using microbiome- friendly products (certifi ed MyMicrobiome) will help reduce infl ammation and skin irritation to get that natural glow. What are the biggest mistakes women make when it comes to skincare regimes? Layering too many products and overcomplicating their routines. To make matters worse, they often do not remove make-up at night. Many women also over-treat their skin with harsh peels or too much retinol which kills their microbiome in the process. You really don’t need a 17-step daily routine. Good to hear. What are your best-selling products, and why do you think they’re so popular? We have two, because they are complementary. The Skin Superfood from our Bia collection hydrates, soothes and alleviates irritated skin. It also helps recovery from skin resurfacing procedures. And the Serum from our Antü collection which reduces infl ammation and helps re-densify skin for a plumper look. Tell us about your commitment to sustainability. We want to help slow down climate change and reduce ocean plastic. The UN has set targets to reduce greenhouse gases to slow down global warming. We want to be a leader in showing sustainable packaging solutions and setting an example for other companies to reduce their carbon footprint, even make it negative. All our tubes are made from renewable sugarcane and are fully recyclable. Our next generation of tubes that we’re introducing later this year have a negative carbon footprint! All of our cartons are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certifi ed. Fantastic! Finally, what is your personal motto when it comes to taking care of skin? Less is more. “ W E D O N O T RE C O M M E N D HA V I N G D R A S T I C COS M E T I C PR O C E D UR E S C L OS E T O A W E DDI N G ” Dr . I’ve always found this fragrance so joyful and brightly balanced between citrus and fl oral. It feels like a true skin scent to me. Subtle and hopeful. I thought it was perfect for a wedding held in the Texas summer – which means high heat and humidity! I still wear it today and Francis Kurkdjian is still my favourite fragrance house.” NINA UBHI Make-up artist and founder of Nina Ubhi Cosmetics “I’ve always been a lover of fragrance, I don’t feel completely ready if I haven’t applied perfume. I’m also very fussy with which scents I feel suit me, so selecting a fragrance for my wedding day was an important task because I wanted the Eau de Parfum, body wash, body lotion… basically the works! Narciso Rodriguez for her Eau de Parfum was my choice for my big day, and it’s still one of my favourite scents of all time. I typically lean more towards slightly masculine, woody scents but I wanted something that still had a subtle hint of femininity to it, and I knew Narciso was the one as soon as I tried it. I loved how it still had all my favourite notes, but had an air of femininity to it. Whenever I wear it, it brings back good memories. I have so many bottles of perfume, I honestly don’t have enough room for them. Yet, every so often when I spray Narciso Rodriguez, it makes me fall in love with it all over again.” 84 HarpersBazaarArabia.com Bride Spring / Summer 2021 HBBR_019_084to085_Fragrances_11662817.indd 8427/04/2021 12:43:34 PMEau de Parfum II EDP, discontinued limited edition, Gucci N°5 EDP, Dhs665, Chanel Oud Wood EDP, Dhs1,485, Tom Ford Oud & Rose EDP, Dhs1,620, Cartier CAROLINE GASPARD Founder, Akillis “My wedding was one of the best days of my life, so it was important for me to wear something that defi ned my personality best. Gucci Eau de Parfum II was the fragrance I chose, a limited-edition scent that I instantly fell for because the smell is so unique, and settled perfectly on my skin. I loved the idea of wearing a perfume that was limited edition and I still wear it today because before it sold out, I purchased many bottles!” MIRIAM ABADI Founder, Tru & Beyond “While growing up, a bottle of Chanel N°5 was always on my mother’s vanity desk. I would often sneak into her bedroom and secretly use it. It was like opening a fl acon of wonders. Throughout my life, Chanel N°5 has always been a part of my perfume collection, especially because its scent brought back memories of serenity and happiness. So of course, it was the perfume that I chose for my wedding day. I love its composition around May rose and jasmine, featuring bright citrus top notes. It also has a smooth touch of Bourbon vanilla and leaves an incredibly beautiful scent trail.” HADEEL ALMUJAHED Executive fl orist, Fine Blooms “My husband gifted me Tom Ford’s Oud Wood before our wedding. It is a blend of amber, agarwood, and fresh spices. For me, the scent of a perfume is a way of associating it with special moments and occasions, captured in a beautiful bottle – which is why I used this fragrance on my wedding day so I can re-live the precious memories whenever I use it again. I am still in love with it. It takes me back to the beautiful old days and it feels like a hug from my husband.” SARA CAVAZZA FACCHINI Creative director, Genny “On my wedding day, I wore an essence that I consider special because of the purity of its composition. An essence in oil purchased in Dubai in an olfactory laboratory in Madinat Souk, which lived on the notes of oud and roses. The rose is the symbol of love and the instrument of its thousand manifestations. I chose to wear it on that day for the purity of its ingredients which made it very precious and exclusive. The moment my groom took me by the hand he was fascinated by the scent. I haven’t been able to fi nd anything exactly the same since, but Cartier’s Oud & Rose comes pretty close.” AS TOLD TO NINA CA TT . My father is a dermatologist, so I grew up understanding the importance of taking care of skin at a very young age. I have combination skin and some areas on my face tend to be very dry. I wanted to ensure that my skin looked healthy, supple, bright, and naturally radiant. I chose a routine which would cater to that. When did you start your bridal skincare regime? Six months prior to my wedding. Who did you go to for advice? My father advised on a daily routine. Then, a friend introduced me to Dr. Malda Al Daoudi at Eternal Clinic in Dubai. Dr. Malda recommended a few treatments that would allow me to get the result I wanted. What professional treatments did you have? I started off with a hydra-facial to deep-clean, exfoliate, and hydrate my skin. I then did a VI Peel to improve the appearance of my skin and to even out the texture and treat minor hyperpigmentation. Finally, I did an Aqua Gold facial which delivers custom results based on your skin’s needs, and really delivers that glow for your big day. Tell us about your at-home bridal regime? It included exfoliating, cleansing, toning, and moisturising. I tend to mix and match different products, but my favourites are Pixi Glow Tonic (6. Dhs105) to deeply clean the pores, Sunday Riley’s C.E.O range which helps the skin glow and look healthier, and Sunday Riley Good Genes All-in-One Lactic Acid Treatment (2. Dhs330) which has really improved my skin’s texture. And of course, sunscreen – always! What other at-home treatments did you indulge in? I used face, hand, and feet masks once or twice each week. The Sephora Collection sheet masks (7. Dhs25) are hydrating and easy to use. I also created my own skin cocktail which includes a few pumps of Sunday Riley A+ Retinoid Serum followed by three or four drops of Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil. COSMETICS & FRAGRANCE: Did you wear false lashes, or have lash extensions? My make-up artist was Christian Abouhaidar, and I absolutely love his range of false lashes as they are extremely wearable. He used a natural-looking, medium-length pair for my big day. What about your brows? Did you have micro-blading or any kind of treatment? No, I opted for natural-looking brows and fi lled them in with make-up. What nail colour did you wear? Essie Ballet Slippers (5. Dhs65). Did you self-tan? Personally, I don’t self-tan as I have a naturally dark complexion, but I used Huda Beauty N.Y.M.P.H body highlighter (1. Dhs125) to give my skin a dewy look. What was your wedding- day fragrance? I love niche perfumes and for my wedding day I chose Jo Malone English Pear and Freesia (3. Dhs415). HAIR: Tell us about your hair schedule in the run-up to the wedding? I had a trim every two months to maintain a healthy look. I also got a fresh balayage colour two weeks prior to my wedding to give my hair a sun-kissed look. Who was your hair go-to? I went to Plush Hair & Beauty salon in Lebanon and my hair was styled by Mohammad Chamseddine. What is your favourite at-home hair treatment? Briogeo’s Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Hair Mask (4. Dhs140), twice a week. Tell us about your big- day hairstyle? I wanted my hair to be simple. I wore my hair in a low, messy bun and fi nished off the look with an Aura Headpieces creation. INTER VIEW BY NINA CA TT . Here, Nina Catt catches up with the beauty guru and Instagram star to talk tips, tricks and must-have products… Beauty guru, Elnaz Golrokh Charlotte Tilbury What’s the number-one piece of advice you give to brides-to-be when it comes to their big-day beauty look? A natural look is always on-trend and is a great option that suits everyone. There’s no chance you’ll look back at the wedding photographs in 10 years and regret a fresh and natural look. What does every bridal client always ask for? Every bride wants to look her very best walking down the aisle and in the hours that follow where tears, heat, and humidity need to be taken into consideration. So the number-one request I get asked is to use long-lasting make-up, which I of course do. How should brides-to-be prep their skin in the run-up to their big day? No one wants a pimple appearing on the morning of their wedding, so brides should try to reduce stress before the big day if possible. One of the major contributors to a breakout is stress, which impacts the hormonal balance of the body. Also, nothing gets skin glowing like H20. Start drinking eight glasses of water per day, at least three weeks before the wedding. The month running up to the wedding is no time to start experimenting with new products as skin can react, so start anything new well in advance. I’d suggest using a great moisturiser and a vitamin C serum – I personally love Dr. Barbara Sturm’s face cream and the Vitamin C Glow Ampoules by Simon Ourian M.D. What bridal beauty trend will never go out of fashion? A natural smoky eye plus a gorgeous nude lip. The smoky eye is a classic make-up look that will always be on-trend because of its versatility, sophistication and how incredibly fl attering it is on all eyes. Has social media impacted wedding-day beauty looks? 100 per cent, yes. Social media now plays a big role when brides research and choose their wedding- day look. Brides often sit in my chair and show me a screenshot of how they want their make-up to look. What’s the one product you use on all your bridal clients? M.A.C Prep + Prime Fix+ setting spray. What was the fi rst beauty product you ever bought for yourself? Lancôme foundation. And what’s the one product you repurchase for yourself, over and over again? Make Up For Ever loose setting powder. It’s perfect for the humid Middle Eastern weather. I could run the Dubai Marathon and my make-up would still look fl awless. Who is your beauty icon? Charlotte Tilbury. I love Charlotte for her ebullient personality and passion for her work. Her use of colour in make-up application is amazing and she has created a product line that embodies the two things I look for; quality and great packaging. She’s the sweetest person I have ever met and absolutely one of the best make-up artists in the world. We agree! What are your favourite product from her line? Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes! mascara, Magic Cream and the Hollywood Flawless foundation. When it comes to make-up, what is your motto?
