REGIS DOWNTOWN DUBAI AN EMIRATI EYE Communications Strategist and storyteller AIDA AL BUSAIDY gives us an important reminder that good health, both physical and mental, should come first – always ’m not sure exactly when, but being focused on my mental and physical health became my number one priority. Me fi rst, then everything and everyone else, because I believe if you are not ok, then you can’t take care of anyone else. Sad story, but I lost my appendix at the start of 2021, at the height of COVID and pre-vaccine period. It was ugly but necessary. No one tells you how it happens and one day, it just does. Oh, and I was also misdiagnosed with COVID because it had similar symptoms. By the time they realised I was infected with a busted appendix, I was in isolation. Obviously, I’m alive to tell the tale, albeit one useless organ short, but here we are... So where am I going with this? Well, you see, October is a month where several health-related issues are globally recognised. From individuals to companies and governments, as well as celebrities shedding light on some key issues such as World Mental Health Day on 10th to Breast Cancer Awareness all month, October has a lot more emphasis than in comparison to the rest of the year. Access to healthcare and wellness centres or experts is a blessing beyond compare. Mental health of late has become a top priority here in the UAE as much as it is globally. So much so, that His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, has launched a Dhs105 million initiative to help residents and citizens cope with the challenges of day-to-day life in a major city as part of the D33 Social Agenda. As for breast cancer, I recall the community walks to raise awareness for something once considered taboo, but now openly discussing mammograms. Under the insurance policy, check ups for all women over 40 is a must. In the past, people would travel East for full-body check- ups and wellness retreats because the birth place of Ayurveda is India. If you look more towards the East, Th ailand is known as the hub for wellness and spa treatments. A little bit further off the coast is Japan, balancing modernity and tradition with wellbeing front and centre. Beyond their herbal approach to medicine, one can’t deny their serene coastlines also put you at ease as you get better. As we become more global and connected, those traditions of wellness are now being widely accepted, shared and used to empower cities and countries to not only attract tourists, but also care for their citizens and residents. Th e level of information, access to data and shared knowledge has empowered us to decipher symptoms (please don’t panic- Google them – check with a qualifi ed doctor), but make informed decisions on how to take care of ourselves and our loved ones better. Th is year, if you haven’t already started, take care of yourself fi rst so you can be a better caretaker to those you love. Abaya, Dhs2,110, Sekka38. After many years silenced by confusion and fear, I summoned the courage to tell my mother. Standing in the kitchen one hot summer day at the age of 12, clutching my dress for comfort, my voice shook as I told her what had happened. Th en, I waited. Waited for a hug, a kiss… even secretly waited, and hoped, for rage. But none of those were to be. She didn’t believe me. Even now, decades later, that moment still plays in my mind on a loop. Th e doubt in her dark eyes hit me so hard that I can still feel the punch today. From that moment, an invisible gap started to rise between us; silent, unpredictable and ready to erupt at any minute. Th e bond that should have been my strongest source of comfort and safety was forever shattered. Her reaction wasn’t just a denial of what happened – it felt like a denial of me. HEALING THE WOUNDS In a NEW COLUMN for Harper’s Bazaar Arabia, RUWAIDA ABELA NORTHEN bravely shares her raw personal journey towards mending generational trauma Today as a mother of four, my past lingers in my everyday existence. Th e consequences of that day have woven themselves into the fabric of my life, shaping the woman and mother I have become. I desperately want to give my children the carefree childhood that was stolen from me, but I can’t escape the little girl constantly whispering in the back of my mind just how easily and quickly the world can hurt them. Knowing that makes it diffi cult for me to let them out of my sight even for fi ve minutes at the supermarket. I am fi ercely protective – perhaps too much at times. My mind constantly races with ‘what ifs’, haunted by my own childhood monster, perpetually struggling between wanting to let them explore the world and the overwhelming need to shield them from it. And yes, I’m acutely aware that my fears could strangle them if I’m not careful, yet the very idea of trusting anyone else with their safety is a risk I’m not willing to take. I continue to work hard to heal, but that’s easier said than done when the wounds run so deep. Th e relationship with my mother remains strained, ruined by all the conversations we never had. She refuses to confront what happened, whether out of guilt, shame, or something else I may never fully understand. It’s one of those taboos; rarely acknowledged yet sadly common. Th ere are fragile moments of connection, but they are easily broken by the unspoken truth that hangs between us and the anger I still carry. I’ve accepted – well, tried to accept – that she may never fully understand the impact of her disbelief, just as I know I will never fully forgive her for it. And you know what? Th at’s okay. Since the very moment I held my fi rst child, I made a promise to myself that no matter what, I will believe them, every time, no matter the consequences. I want them to know that they can always come to me; that their voices will always be heard. My past may have shaped me, but it doesn’t defi ne me. I am so much more than the girl who wasn’t believed – I am a mother determined to vanquish the villain. Ruwaida’s traumatic childhood has made her determined to protect her own children at all costs “My past may have shaped me, but it doesn’t define me.
